Judge Me By The Content Of My Character, Not What Memes I Choose To Do

I first came across the gay rights meme this morning, and I was nodding along and thinking I'd post it myself until I came to this line:

"If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as 'Gay Rights'. If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this."

Wait, so if I decide that with my uncopious free time I'm going to do something besides post this, I'm against gay rights?

I know that's probably not how most of you meant it, but that's how I heard it.

I support gay rights. I believe in gay rights. And I show this by my actions, thoughts, and beliefs. Not by what I post in my livejournal.

On a happy note, in honor of October 3d (Don't Forget) I've posted a song that always reminds me of Ed here.

Yeah, I was nodding along, and then was like, "What?"

(I only realized the significance of 3 October when my flist got spammed. *is a bad FMA fangirl*)

What do you think of the song?

Glad you liked.

I didn't post it either, mainly because I just don't really do many memes anymore, and it's a meme, and why bother?

I very, very strongly believe in gay rights -- I'm gay, so, you know, yeah, I think I have / should have rights. Oddly enough.

Memes should be fun, not passive-agressive!

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I posted, but...the wording! The bloody arrogant, guilt-tripping wording!
I admire your choice to word things in your own way. *applause*

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :bows:

Yes, I was all set to go, and then.... I don't like my memes to try and guilt trip me.

[identity profile] lightprincess89.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My thought exactly. I really don't care to do memes all that often. *shrugs* So, I felt like..."if I don't post this. I am an evil human being?" Anyway, just because someone posts a meme doesn't always mean they are gungho for those beliefs. It's better to act out those beliefs. Treating everyone like they are a person.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally in agreement.

[identity profile] fictatious.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, yeah, mzminola and I got into a debate on my sand3 jounral over the rather... exclusive word choice in it. It is very malecentric, the quote is excusable because it's a quote taken out of context, but the rest of it just kind of continues that way... And considering women still do not have equal rights in the US (and we're like the only industrialized country that hasn't managed to pass that ammendment...) I have to say, my focus is going to be a bit more there... But once we do go past that and into the issue of the transgendered, I think I'd rather support bills that include me too... I want a third choice on the 'Gender' check-boxes! C! I choose C!!!

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-05 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the belief behind the meme was good, but the wording was a flinch worthy. I'm actually surprised that I got such a positive response; I was kind of expecting a little bit of "support us, bitch" but consitering the people I have on my flist, I shouldn't have been as suprised as I was.

There should totally be a choice C.

There is, in many cultures. Stupid Plato just screwed it up for Westerners... Freakin' dualism... The world is not bianary!
(I also support polygamy and other things that our bianary system has crushed. I see nothing wrong with polygamy if the members of a union are happy!)

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
If ONLY the world would binary. Things would be a lot easier. (But much less fun, so it's probably good the world is the way it is.)

Okay, I have problems with polygamy, but that's mainly because I know I would hate it, and I'm really sick of it invading so much of fandom (for the love of god, just write about two people! At this point it would be exotic and new!). However, I'm not about to say that just because it's not my kink NOBODY should do it.

[identity profile] fictatious.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about three-way sex. I'm not talking about polygamy as a kink at all. It's not. It's a living arrangement and social grouping. It does not denote more than two people in the bed at one time. That's just confusing. It's about emotional connection and the fact that an equal relationship does not have to be between just two people. Relationships between two people aren't generally equal. In my observations, based on just the dynamic between people, close friendships tend to be more equal among three people than two. I fell like that could be extrapolated out into romantic relationships. And in cultures with polygeny, not all of them are opressing women. In some of them, it tends to be the woman that tells her husband, 'go find me another wife'. Polygamy isn't about opression or sex, you see. It's about the fact that a close, romantic and familial bond can be forged between more than just two people. It's the idea that love can be not exclusive but inclusive.
But it is a more difficult dynamic to achieve off of our Western social educations. This is the Greco-Roman influence still with us in our personal relationships.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Intellectually, I can see your point. Emotionally, I tend to think that three-way sexual relationships would always have one person being the third wheel.

"It's the idea that love can be not exclusive but inclusive." I like that idea. But my Greco-Roman influence is just a little too strong for me to want a polygamous relationship.

(And I am, really, really tired of seeing it in fic.)

[identity profile] fictatious.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to want one to support it. Merely agree that the US government is stomping all over the supposed 'freedom of religion' by denying people who do want it the right to multiple wedded partners.
And I will always write a warning on fics that include that sort of thing. I know it's an area of contention.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a quote from Bill Mahr that I feel is appropriate: "I'm a Librarian, which means I'm against the government doing just about anything." Substitute 'doing' for 'controlling' and voila.

[identity profile] fictatious.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Was that really supposed to be 'librarian' or possibly 'libertarian'?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
*spellcheck is not always on your side.*

Yes, it's supposed to be 'libertarian'. *is embarrassed*
