To put it another way, it's more like a bonus post-series short story than outright fic. I mean, it's more canon-y than stuff like the Middleman creator's Star Trek crossover fic.
But the guy is pretty welcoming of fandom; he'll post fanart on his blog with the occasional comment to the effect of "Just FYI Dr. Barlow has a husband back home" before a piece of Varlow fanart.
And I gotta say any views I had on the matter have drastically shifted since discovering Orlando Jones' tumblr. When an actor reblogs fanart of their character, does their own photoshops on a regular basis, directly requests slashfic involving their character, and uses their twitter to rec OT3 fic, it just snaps something in your brain.
