Sci-Fi Class was canceled, which gives me the chance to catch up on Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich (which sucks, fyi) and write my make up essay for Graphic Novels.

Eyes are about to bleed and I'm bored.

So....

A game of cliff, shag, or marry!

(Where you give me three people and I pick who I'd shag, who I'd marry, and who I'd push off a cliff.)

Well, since I think the series took a nose dive post CoTB and only returned to good with AWE, I'm not totally thrilled about that news.

Although you calling the first movie the "Save Elizabeth" movie reminded me of how much I liked Elizabeth seemed to rescue herself a bit, and then went back to rescue Will. No wilting flower she.

See, the thing people miss is that there is nothing inherently WRONG with a Damsel in Distress. DiDs are perfectly decent characters and plot elements. The problem is that both audiences and creators assume that DiDs will never do anything but sit around and wait to be rescued. (Ever watch Gundam Wing? In the post-series movie, the heroine literally sits there and lets a kid half her size rants at her and never even thinks about saving herself, she just waits for the hero to save her.) There are many, many perfectly decent DiDs who, even if they can't quite save themselves, at least make things difficult for their kidnappers, and sometimes even turn things around. Look at Princess Bride. That thing is the ultimate "hero saves damsel in distress...a lot" movie, yet Buttercup, though no fighter, makes things utterly miserable for her various kidnappers, including pushing one down a mountain(only to then realize he was the supposedly-dead true love and send herself tumbling after, but that's not the point.) It's not the character type(even if, like Elizabeth, they move far beyond that) it's what you do with it.

That is a good point.

*winces*

And I have to say, while Buttercup does do her best, she also really annoys me - the heroine DiD should be really effective at fighting back - and it's not that what Elizabeth did was so different, but that after she was rescued she didn't really do anything, while Elizabeth continued running around doing things.

I've always though Buttercup was supposed to annoy us somewhat. The whole thing is a rip into the traditional fairy tale. The handsome prince is the villain, the castle guards are weenies, the prince's right-hand-man is essentially a sadist. Flipside: the hero is a pirate, his sidekicks are loer criminals, and the princess is a commoner and, instead of being purely pleasant and angelic(and totally lacking in all signs of personality), is a bit of a cold bi***(but at least she has a personality). It also follows the format very, very strictly, which means the DiD must wait to be rescued yet again...but she can still make the evil prince's life a pain just by being her demanding self.
