Stop killing the ladies, writers.

If my tumblr dash can be trusted, it looks like Beverly over on Hannibal just died.

I just can not.

Back when Abigail Hobbs died, someone commented that killing teenage girls was, basically, the cheapest, laziest storytelling move a writer can make, and you know what? It is.

I am just so fucking tired of ladies being expendable and vehicles for man-pain and treated as replaceable.

It especially grates with Beverly because I was reading an article with Brian Fuller, who basically said that Abigail Hobbes had been killed off because if they'd killed who they originally intended, there wouldn't have been enough audience investment in the character. And then Fuller refused to say more, because he "might still kill them off."

And I knew, I fucking knew, he was talking about Beverly. And I think her increased role this season has been almost solely so her death hurts more.

FYI Teen Wolf Spoilers in the comments.

I feel like quitting tv, I can't deal with losing Allison and Beverly IN THE SAME WEEK.

I'm just so done.

Agree with this whole post, it's like, WOMEN ARE EXPENDABLE AND JUST THERE TO DIE TO CAUSE OTHER PAIN, BUT WHITE DUDES ARE JUST SO IMPORTANT WE CAN'T KILL THEM OFF.

I need better shows.

It is just the biggest fuck-you that I think Fuller could have wrote. It retroactively makes Abigail's death EVEN MORE AWFUL and I hadn't thought that was possible.

Pretty much.

BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MANY SMART, MINORITY WOMEN IN STEM FIELDS.

I feel so vindicated that I officially quit Hannibal a couple weeks ago.

I just watched Teen Wolf. And I watched Hannibal earlier tonight.

I'm so depressed right now.

Wow, that is a double billing I would only wish on my worst enemy. Poor girl.

This week just proves nothing good comes from letting white men be in charge of television.

I don't watch teen wolf or Hannibal but I am so pissed on behalf of those fandoms.

Thank you. I'd quit watching Hannibal officially already but I am still fucking pissed, and angry about the time I spent watching the first season and choices they made then.

*nods* This is a reason why I'm very picky about the media I consume nowadays, besides not wanting to put more money into the pockets of white, racist, misogynistic male creators/show runners/bastards. If I'm going to spend so many hours on a fandom/show, I damn well better be somewhat emotionally/intellectually satisfied by the end of it and sometimes the only way I can guarantee that is by giving the fandom a thorough background check. I read reviews and fandom rants all night long baby!

I wish I didn't have to be so cynical but with the creative choices western entertainment makes these days...

Same. I have no faith that a story is going to conclude in a way that doesn't drive me up a wall, so one thing I do is keep really current with whether or not I'm enjoying a show on an episode by episode basis. If the answer is no, and I'm sticking around (usually) out of character loyalty, that's often a good sign that I should just drop the show.

If only they didn't prove our cynicism as realism over and over again....

To be honest, I'm sure character loyalty is the only reason most people put up with horrible TV shows, even though the narrative will end up scarring/disappointing them. For example, Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Many of the 'fans' of that show only stick around out of loyalty to the original series and/or some of the minor characters despite how painful the writing is, and A:TLK hasn't even done a good job of respecting the old cast.

I feel like writing a guide on how to ditch horrible fandoms using what you just said as a point because I can't count the number of times I've thought: 'Girl, you can do better. Fanfiction is what loving favourite characters who need to be treated right are for and I guarantee fanfiction will disappoint you much less than the actual series.'

I just want fandom to love itself enough to leave crappy television shows. Or at least enjoy television shows that are less problematic and give them some semblance of joy.

Preach. I would LOVE to read this post. One of my suggestions: does any episode of the show actually entertaining you? If no, quit the show.

I'm on a bit of a writing kick at the moment, so I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure about the format or structure though. I'm thinking I should set it up like one of those cosmo quizzes you get in magazines but I think a Q and A structure would be more interesting. I'd get to make witty, relevant remarks that'll encourage the reader to leave the show.

I'll include that question.

Oh, Goddamit, Beverly?!
Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 07:18 pm (UTC)
Yep. I was thinking there was some doubt but further comments have lead me to believe that we see her dead, displayed body.
Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 08:08 pm (UTC)
Oh FFS. I mean...can we please stop fridging female chars just for added manpain?
Tuesday, March 25th, 2014 10:18 am (UTC)
I vote yes but no one fucking is listening to me.

I was yelling at Beverly to get the hell out of there when she was searching Hannibal's place. :-( AFAIK, there isn't a body yet? I don't see how she could possibly be alive if Hannibal is back to his serene, people-eating self in the next episode, but there may be a chance she's locked up in his basement or something? IDK. (I'm still not convinced Abigail is dead. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but Hannibal did seem terribly fond of her, and there was no body there either.)

P.S.: SO GLAD Bedelia got away.

Well, quotes from the writers say she's dead-dead, and are talking about how her body is going to be displayed next episode, so.

And I wouldn't put it past the writers to back track and bring Abigail back - especially if they're hearing reactions that are anything like what I've been hearing - but it would have DEFINITELY been a ret-con, considering that Fuller has stated MULIPLE places that Abigail is dead.
