Reason 1,763 that I love Avatar and its fandom:

So, I'm scrolling around the main comm, and I come across a rec post for [profile] soko_7 and [profile] 5_loves. Now, I'm like, 'Soko?" So I start to do the mental name splicing you do when you come across a pairing name that you don't know (and seriously, people, why does every pairing name need to be smushed together? I mean, for Zutara and Kataang it works, because that's what you end up saying/typing anyway when you've said Zuko/Katara or Katara/Aang ten billion times in a brief period, but Sukka? I'm dyslexic, people, when the pairing name is ONE LETTER away from a character's name, just take the time to type that extra four letters +slash please?).

But back to my tangent, I'm like "-ko, -ko, okay, must be a Zuko/somebody pairing, So- So- whose name starts with -oh. Sokka/Zuko." So I mentally bite my tongue on thoughts like, 'why are you pairing Zuko with the water tribe peasant who he DOESN'T have fights full of UST with?' and scroll down while doing that mental white noise thing I spent most of my time on [community profile] saiyuki doing, and then I get to the part where the poster goes, "something, something, Zuko/Song."

Me: You mean... Zuko + sweet healer girl for that one episode? There's a whole comm just for them?

Avatar fandom: *smooch*

Oh yeah, Zuko/Song is quite popular, actually. More popular even than Zuko/Jin, which I totally don't get, because he actually went on a date with Jin, and got a kiss, and even admitted he had a good time. :p

(Of course he had to go ruin it by being emo and confuzzled: "It's complicated." Actually the concept of sex is quite simple, Zuko. !!! He gave up this to go get it on with Mai? Gimme a break.)

I totally understand why it would be more popular than Zuko/Jin, because of the angst - she's been (literally) burned by the fire nation, he stole her ostrich-horse, etc. There's just so much to work with, on both sides, where Jin is a much more cheerful girl who doesn't have that painful history, or that history with Zuko.

(In my episode recap for "Tales of Ba Sing Se" I went, "and he says 'it's complicated' while in the same city as Katara Coincidence?")

I am mainly just basking in the glorious het. Part of it is that Avatar has some many awesome female characters, but FMA has the same amount, and it has WAY more slash. I think Avatar is just an amazingly het-friendly fandom AND I LOVE IT SO, SO MUCH!!!!!!!!

Agreed. I still don't get why every other mention of Jin I see mentions her big boobs. Honestly, it's not like she wore a tube top or something . . . they didn't strike me as being that big.

Mai was Zuko's choice when he was fooling himself that he was a good little Fire Nation prince. In that situation, he was limited to someone a)female, b)of the Fire Nation and c)Not related to him. Unless a new character were brought in (which would probably be handled even worse), his only other option is Ty Lee, and she's just too perky for Zuko. At that time and with the mindset he had, I can accept that he went with Mai.

I think that came about because her breasts changed size a lot? I admit, I hadn't noticed, because I was paying more attention to Zuko being a dork.

But yes, Mai was all part of Zuko's pod prince act. Please let that be the end of that relationship, now that Zuko finally has his head screwed on straight.

Eh. Maybe, but only if you were looking close. Still, it seemed to be named as her defining character trait.

Yep. Though he's probably feeling pretty shitty for using her like that, no matter his feelings for her.

Zuko sure as hell better feel really guilty for what he did to her. I am firmly convinced that post-war, Song is either going to get some random soldier bring her either an ostrich-horse or a sack of gold, or both.
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 04:54 pm (UTC)
He'll probably do that for all the girls he's wronged. Song gets two ostrich-horses, a sack of gold, and a note of thanks for 'donating' her ostrich-horse to the cause. It'd be an outright apology, but Zuko needs to keep some face with the troops. Mai gets a cushy job that suits her well and lets her order around soldiers, because regardless of everything else, he did use her. Jin gets her own tea shop in Ba Sing Se.

Umm... Zuko owes some amends to Song, definitively, but Jin? I mean, he was graceless with her, but not unkind, and Mai? How was he using Mai? He was dating her, and doing a far better job of being a boyfriend than his sister's cranky, emotionally unavailable friend was at being a girlfriend. (Zuko at least was trying.)

Perhaps Jin gets a bunch more tea coupons. ;)
Sunday, April 13th, 2008 06:58 am (UTC)
I could see her getting free tea. (And also, how thrilled am I that you see her again, in the tea shop, looking horrified as the fire nation invades?)

LOL!

Dude, she does have nice cans.

I play her in the capslock atla RP. [livejournal.com profile] nicejugs. LOL!! XDDD

(haven't been active in that lately, though. Must remedy!)

Two comms, actually. ^_^ And a pretty cultish thread on DH.

On your FMA comment earlier: I'm not sure it does have an equal amount, really. It seems that proportionally, Avatar has more awesome female characters. If they are equal, I think the FMA women get less screentime than the Avatar ones.

I liked Song. She was a full-fledged healer as a something-teen. Whoo!
*quietly waves her Zuko is gay flag*
I liked Jin too. *wonders if there is a Jin/Song comm*
I could see Song/Zuko since she started to show him normal folks less as obstacles, more as people.
...ooooooh, how much do you think seeing Song's burn scar affected the green-crystal-cave scene?

I think this is the case. Still I think that the prevalance of het in Avatar also just has a lot to do with the fans themselves.

I liked Song. She was a full-fledged healer as a something-teen. Whoo!

Yes! She and Katara should chat.

I remember reading either a June/Song or Song/Jin fic... no idea where it is now though.

...ooooooh, how much do you think seeing Song's burn scar affected the green-crystal-cave scene?

I'm not sure it effected that scene specifically, but I do think that it really brought home the truth of the war to Zuko.

I really, really like Avatar. I'm hardly in the fandom, but from what you're saying here, and the awesome people at Sakuracon, I think it's safe to say it's a pretty rad place.

I think he knew the truth of the war ("-lesson on my face!") but before he'd only applied it to himself. It helped...expand his view of it? Maybe I need an icon for strained thinking.

Song/Jin would be like...so much fluff I think I'd like it just as friendshipping. With wit and giggling.

Yep, Avatar fandom is pretty awesome. I mean, you get the usual percentage of internet fuckwits that you get in every fandom, but on the whole, I'm very pleased.

See, I almost think the war was rather separate from his honor and his scar and such - that felt like such a family affair, that I don't think larger 'there's a war going on and innocent people are dying,' or even, 'our own people are dying' was a large factor in his thinking in season 1. Zuko's motivations are all focused on his father and his honor, and the catalyst for his break with his family could have been spilling paint in the garage, you know?

So I don't think he really got the reality for war, or how intertwined it is with his family until 'Zuko alone'.

Which is quite similar to what you were saying, I just had to ramble about Zuko. ^_^

And yes, Song/Jin would corner the market on friendship and giggling and wit.

I am surprised not because of the fact the people ship it, but at the fact that there's enough people who do to make a comm. A large part of me is just squeeing over the love the het gets in this fandom.
