Reason 1,763 that I love Avatar and its fandom:

So, I'm scrolling around the main comm, and I come across a rec post for [profile] soko_7 and [profile] 5_loves. Now, I'm like, 'Soko?" So I start to do the mental name splicing you do when you come across a pairing name that you don't know (and seriously, people, why does every pairing name need to be smushed together? I mean, for Zutara and Kataang it works, because that's what you end up saying/typing anyway when you've said Zuko/Katara or Katara/Aang ten billion times in a brief period, but Sukka? I'm dyslexic, people, when the pairing name is ONE LETTER away from a character's name, just take the time to type that extra four letters +slash please?).

But back to my tangent, I'm like "-ko, -ko, okay, must be a Zuko/somebody pairing, So- So- whose name starts with -oh. Sokka/Zuko." So I mentally bite my tongue on thoughts like, 'why are you pairing Zuko with the water tribe peasant who he DOESN'T have fights full of UST with?' and scroll down while doing that mental white noise thing I spent most of my time on [community profile] saiyuki doing, and then I get to the part where the poster goes, "something, something, Zuko/Song."

Me: You mean... Zuko + sweet healer girl for that one episode? There's a whole comm just for them?

Avatar fandom: *smooch*

Yep, Avatar fandom is pretty awesome. I mean, you get the usual percentage of internet fuckwits that you get in every fandom, but on the whole, I'm very pleased.

See, I almost think the war was rather separate from his honor and his scar and such - that felt like such a family affair, that I don't think larger 'there's a war going on and innocent people are dying,' or even, 'our own people are dying' was a large factor in his thinking in season 1. Zuko's motivations are all focused on his father and his honor, and the catalyst for his break with his family could have been spilling paint in the garage, you know?

So I don't think he really got the reality for war, or how intertwined it is with his family until 'Zuko alone'.

Which is quite similar to what you were saying, I just had to ramble about Zuko. ^_^

And yes, Song/Jin would corner the market on friendship and giggling and wit.
