There's Something About Men Who Build Things...

Saw Iron Man. It was awesome.

I was expecting just your average superhero story, but this really blew away my expectations.

The hero was realistically flawed, grew substantially but not unbelievably, and was played by a great actor (actually, the whole cast was quite above par).

The romance was nicely played, and I liked how Pepper Potts (whose name I, personally, adored) took crap from no one, despite all the ways she was coded as traditionally female. Plus I get a kick out of relationships where they're totally in love and still calling each other Ms So-and-So and Mr Such and Such.

I liked the movie's realistic ideas about weapons development, the humor was on-key and didn't detract from the dramatics, but the best part by far was the little robots helping Tony Stark. They had personality to spare, and some best scene were just Stark and his toys.

You saw it too? Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Someone to squee about it with!

I loved the relationship Tony Stark and Pepper Potts had. Especially since they did not have them definitively hook up. They left it open! They left it fucking open!
And I liked that what she brought up strongest about the dancing night was that he never brought her her drink.

"Later, baby." Sequel? do we get a sequel? Oh and did you stay all through the credits? There was a tag.

In Red Dwarf, there are little robots with three-digited heads that pick things up, called Scutters. That's what I called his toys. You're right, those were some of the funnest scenes.

I think I might have been drooling a bit during the Building Things scenes, especially when the new suit was being all moving...little gears and wires and *deep, happy sigh*

I'd like to know how old the characters were all supposed to be.

I actually stupidly didn't stay though the whole credits, even though I had a suspicion that I should. *kicks self*

Yeah, the relationship with Pepper and Tony was great! I was actually almost expect the agent of SHEILD to ask her out, and I would have adored that, just because I like my heroes to suffer. And how we learn so much about their relationships via significant glances that aren't overplayed (the scene where he's realizing he doesn't know her birthday is particularly pignant.)

You were not the only one.

And I'd guess that the characters are in their early thirties.

If you want the tag to be a surprise when you see the movie again, I can keep quiet. But if you don't plan on seeing it again soon and want to know, just ask.

I love that her buying the present to herself from him is so old hat by now she'd already done it.
*grins* Characters suffering and not whining too much about it is nearly always fun.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Please keep quiet! I'm probably going to see the movie again before it leaves theatres.

*grins* I smirk to think about what that dress must have cost (and Stark can totally afford it.)

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I shall simply chuckle evilly, then. *quietly mwa ha ha ha ha's*

"You want a slinky dress? I can get you a slinky dress. Captain, may I have money to by my wife a slinky dress?"
Maaaaaaaaaaaay be remembering that wrong, but I think it applies.

Betcha she knows the workings of his bank accounts better than he does.

Saw the tag.

Can we said made of freaking win?

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
And it's even the actor that character is visually modeled after!

Win indeed. Do you smell a sequal?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm praying.

Plus, can you imagine the good Pepper could do with a huge superhero organization and her management skills?

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2008-05-03 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
that is good to know. I've only ever been so-so on Ironman growing up and was debating if I'd see it. Now I guess I'll give it a try

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's very enjoyable. It has the best mix of humor and drama in any superhero movie I've ever seen. (That said, the first X-men is still my favorite superhero movie EVER, but it didn't have Iron Man's pitch perfect mix of humor and angst.)

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
i'll try to see it

[identity profile] fairest1.livejournal.com 2008-05-03 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Given how everyone's been squeeing, it seems I have no choice but to see this at my next opportunity.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
It well worth the price of admission. (And I don't always say that.)

[identity profile] yukitheawesome.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yay!!! I'm so glad someone else has already seen it. I just got back from seeing it with my brother, and HOLY FUCK! I was bouncing up and down in the car thinking "Eeehhhhh, I have to find someone else who's seen this! Must squee!"

It was a lot better than I'd thought it would be. Totally blew me away. Pepper and Tony have, officially, one of my favorite relationships. It was perfect. And you're totally right - I giggled that last time they addressed each other as "Mr. Stark" and "Ms. Potts."

"If you gas me again and I'm not on fire, I'm donating you to a city college." So tongue-in-cheek. XD

Tell me if this is a good idea: I need to draw a picture of Alphonse Elric and Iron Man arm wrestling. I thought of it halfway through the movie and went "…I must make it so."

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I know! Tony and Pepper were great! I loved how Pepper could have been just 'The Girl' but she wasn't - she really did a lot with that role - she seemed steely and feminine and loney all at once.

"If you gas me again and I'm not on fire, I'm donating you to a city college." So tongue-in-cheek. XD

That was possibly the best line in the film.

And you should so draw that. And afterwards, draw Edward Elric and Tony Stark armwrestle - no. No, do WINRY and Stark armwresting! (20 bucks on the chick.)

[identity profile] yukitheawesome.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
-gigglesnort- Well, there was also, "…Let's be honest. This isn't the worst thing you've caught me doing."

O, the fanart. I can see it now. It will be fantabulous. :]

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-05-04 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Tony was great. He was such sleaze, yet not at the same time.
