[livejournal.com profile] innerbrat  has a great post about 'seeing that arrow'; in essence, problematic elements in media that is well worth a read. For me, one of those things that I can't not see is issues of gender. For example, while I adore Hugh Jackman and Wolverine, every time I watch a trailer I can't help but thing, 'wow, this is an incredibly male dominated movie.' In one of the little video introductions that got linked on my flist earlier, they showed clips with, like, five different characters, and the only time there was a woman was Logan's fridged girlfriend. Also, regarding the new Star Trek - the fact that the two clips of Uhura we see are her smiling at Kirk and making out with Kirk, I highly doubt they're going to do much to upgrade her role.

[personal profile] p0lyleritae  has a great post on the National Organization for Marriage's propaganda video. As well as written every single retort that I had watching, she also has some amusing video links that point out all the blatant lies in NOM's video.

And since other people have been smart, articulate and rational, let me just say:

Dear NOM,

FUCK YOU.

DIAF,
Red.

Rec three communities you enjoy that people on your friends list may not have heard of.
(And if you want to play, feel free to either gab about enjoyable comms in the comments, or repost on your own journal.)

[livejournal.com profile] staringout . It's a writing community which, each day, posts a quote by a a famous individual about writing and then a really good writing prompt. Thanks for introducing me to it, [info]hireadd !

[livejournal.com profile] fannish5 . Each friday, they post a fannish question in a set of five. Sometimes I'm disappointed about the question but often it will result in starting the weekend with a bit of meta.

[livejournal.com profile] hakkai_yaone . Oh, poor, polite, ignored Saiyuki OTP.
