Can I just mention how awesome it is that Obama is getting sworn in on the day after we celebrate Martin Luther King Day?

Because it is.

On that subject (only not really) 20 Black Sci-Fi Icons. I'm trying to decide what to make of the fact that 3/20 are characters from Firefly. Now, Zoe (hell yeah does Zoe ever) and Book should totally be on that list, but the Operative? Especially considering that the Operative was the second black villain in a row, who were.... I want to say arguably subhuman, but have the feeling I would get lynched if I did. Anyway, you have the bounty hunter getting associated with being a lion, threatening to rape Kaylee, and then you have the Operative, who is explicitly a tool of the Alliance, which (from what we saw) was comprised of white males. I dunno, I just think that surely there was a better choice for that slot than the Operative.)

But the Marquis de Carrabas? HELL YEAH. That actor was, hands down, the best part of Neverwhere, and if I had though that he was going to be the next Doctor and then gotten the pretty barely-old-enough-to-shave boy that we did? I would have screamed so very loudly they would have heard me in England.

Hmm...a few of those really seemed to just be trying to reach 20. They had Michael but not Teal'c? Heathens!

Regarding The Operative, I wouldn't say he was subhuman so much as he had rejected his humanity, and by the end, he realized it was wrong and made sure that the corruption of his masters was known. Which isn't to say that I necessarily think he should be there or really agree with their reasons.

Mind you the lack of one of my two favorite Whedon characters Zoe would have resulted in blood, but that thankfully isn't the case.

I agree, a few of these seem to be just to reach twenty. That being the case, he should have talked to some people in his offic, because of the three commentators on this entry, all of them had at least one black sci-fi icon who should have been on the list.

(As rashaka points out, they left off Worf. Freaking WORF!)

I can't believe the Operative is on that list and Worf isn't.

OH MY FUCKING GOD THAT IS THE TRAVESTY THAT I KNEW WAS THERE AND YET COULDN'T REMEMBER THE DETAILS OF!

Thank you.

I agree, I'm not sure the Operative should be up there. I'm happy about Zoe and Book though, and also about Morpheus. But . . . Michael? That pathetic, worthless example of a man? Good father? He was a controlling father. He somehow believed that taking his son on a raft on a trip he didn't know he'd survive was safer than staying with him on an island when his son had shown to be desperate to stay. Harold Perrinau is amazing, but I hate Michael. If they wanted a character from Lost, they needed Eko, or, you know what? Rose. Rose is awesome.

I don't watch Lost, but from what you tell me... yeah, I totally agree.

Yeah, I agree. His intentions were good, but his judgement was pretty bad, all the way to the end.

Though honestly, I think Rose is even better than Eko because she is the only person on the show who is practical and level-headed. She's a kind lady, willing to give a sympathetic ear but she can also cut off somebody's bullshit. Before the crash, she was accepting her death from her cancer. That takes nerves of steel.

So yeah. Total word on Rose.

Yeah, though at least, unlike Eko, Michael got to finish his character arc. ^^; But I agree. Rose is one of my favorite characters on the show. (She fulfills two things I love on TV, too: middle-aged to older characters, and committed or married couples. <3 She and Bernard are just awesome when the interact.) I love that she won't take anybody's crap, including Jack. I utterly agree with you, Rose is just unbelievably awesome.

"Jack, if you say 'Live together, die alone,' I am going to punch you in the nose."

Exactly.

The Operative is COMPELLING, but when you have a guy who is, in essence, an interesting stooge held up against a man who was a chief leader in orchestrating a rebellion that helped save the universe, and inspired his entire race to seek freedom from slavery and oppression...

If it makes you feel better, I do believe that this is the site which described Miss Piggy as 'bovine'.

I'm trying to decide which is more horrifying; thinking bovine means pig, or thinking that Miss Piggy is a cow.
