Do you know what not to read for ‘just for a few minutes’ before going  to bed, especially when you should be asleep already?

Godchild.

Man, Godchild is twisted. Talk about a wacked-out creepy manga. Drugging a father so he kills his daughter? He was already a psycho, but that’s pushing it. And Cain, were you really that annoyed that she was coming on to you?

Mainly I feel sorry for Mary- can you imagine going from living on the streets telling fortunes to being locked up in a mansion having deportment lessons? At least Leonie got to fence. Mary has a great name, though.

I feel dirty even saying this, but am I the only one picking up incesty vibes between her and Cain? His possessiveness, the fact that a lolita complex was mentioned in the third panel after we first met her, and the, frankly, really disturbing conversation that ended the chapter....

“My feelings might something that could engulf you in flames” and “I don’t mind if I have to be a bird trapped in cage, I want to be trapped inside your love.”

I'm like.... I haven’t seen a brother so attached to his sister since Hakkai and we all know how that turned out. Adding in that Cain is a child of incest himself, and I’m forcibly restraining myself from making a ‘keeping it in the family’ joke.

And now, in a complete change of tone,

Valentine’s Day Meme!

Pick a couple and a prompt from behind the cut, and I’ll write you a drabble.

I could see that too. I remember hearing Rob Thomas mention once that he wanted her to finish college early and head off to Quantico, and I always liked the idea of her being a massively successful FBI agent and getting to nail murderers and serial killers.

See, with Duncan, his complete null-ness as a human being and the way he drags Veronica down to his level of dull is what makes me hate him. Boring trumps incest for annoyence factor in my book.

(But you're right, it is creepy.)
Sunday, March 18th, 2007 12:38 am (UTC)
Hm, good point . . . but even with the FBI, I get the feeling she'd inevitably wind up sneaking into her superior's office to get a file she needed or something, so heading out on her own would probably be better for her.

Well, since Weevil struck me as Veronica's best option since the first episode, I figured my opinion of all her other romantic interests might be biased, so I just went with the creepy. At least Logan got in some solid character development. He was annoying, but there was development.
Monday, March 19th, 2007 03:39 am (UTC)
Oh she so totally would.

The only thing about being a PI is I don't know if she's get enough really interesting cases, and I think she's really like putting murders behind bars.

Once they developed the Veronica/Logan relationship (oh my god what a kiss on the balcony! ) I was really into that during the first season. After that, the LoVe died for me (in every way.)
Monday, March 19th, 2007 03:51 am (UTC)
Hey, if Angel can find enough cases to be a PI in the Buffyverse, Veronica might have a shot. She's solved a decent number of murders on her own in Neptune, so I'm sure she'd do well enough.

Though the trial (I just finished season two) left me wondering how the hell several vital bits of evidence weren't even brought up by Veronica. Like the fact that, even if the man who lived in the house wasn't able to testify, the paramedics would have a record of treating his concussion and scalp wound. And the fact that he TRIED TO BURN HER ALIVE.

Yeah. Logan . . . has issues. That make him more annoying than interesting.
Wednesday, March 21st, 2007 09:37 pm (UTC)
True. It's not as if Neptune lacks criminals of any sort.

...must... not... rant...

Oh my god don't get me started on the trial. I was so furious when I watched the episode- had the prosocuter never watched an episode of L&O in their life? With five minutes of preperation I could have done a better job. Even if they managed to get him off on the murder (a la OJ) he was caught red-handed in three counts of assault, and I don't know what the penalty for breaking into someone's care is.

Yeah, that whole episode enraged me. (But was excellent prep for the finale. I watched that with a friend who still liked that should and I bit my tounge so much to avoid ruining his fun.)

Even if the writers wanted to make it so Aaron got off via the cult of celebrity, they could have done a better job than making the DA a brain-dead moron.

In general, issues are good, but I think that they erred with Logan (by thinking that Veronica belonged with him instead of Weevil.)

And -- there were witnesses to the tapes. Tapes that were, odds are, properly logged in as evidence at some point. That were pretty much ignored. What does he need to do, write a book on how he would have seduced Lily if he'd actually wanted to? And why didn't they try calling in witnesses from the party who could say that Veronica did not approach him at any point and thus was not attempting to seduce him?

Eh, he still got killed. I cheered at that.

Yep yep yep. I fear they view the 'Bad boy with a heart of gold' as being someone that only the fanfic writers and not official writers can pair Veronica with.

Because if they did any of this, the writers would be competent?

I would have prefered to have Aaron liking a long, long life in prison as someone's bitch, but getting shot in the head is also good.

I actually, one of my complaints with the VM fandom, when I was in it, was that no one was writing Veronica/Weevil, which was so, so ripe for fic that it broke my heart. No, it was all about the LoVe.
Wednesday, March 21st, 2007 10:24 pm (UTC)
Ah, true. But if Aaron had lived and stayed in prison, that would likely mean he'd wind up breaking out and being a threat if the writers were having trouble figuring out what bad guy to pull out of the woodwork one season.

Hm . . . I've only just started poking around, but [livejournal.com profile] head_tilt seems to be fairly active. I figure LoVe is just more popular because it's an amusing namesquish.
Wednesday, March 21st, 2007 10:30 pm (UTC)
Why didn't I find that when I was deeping in love with VM? I hate finding the perfect community for a fandom after you've already mostly left.

I think LoVe is more popular because when you're picking between two bad boys, most people went with the one who had money. (*is bitter*)
Wednesday, March 21st, 2007 10:41 pm (UTC)
I think that's a law of the universe. I figure, ten minutes after I leave the Fables fandom out of despair, there'll be a few hundred good authors signing up for it.

Ah. Right. The sugar daddy effect.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 03:21 am (UTC)
Gee, I hope I'm in fables fandom when you leave... ^_^ That seems to be the way it always works.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 08:47 pm (UTC)
I'm in too deep to quit anytime soon -- when it reaches the point where the creator would notice if you left the fandom, it becomes tricky. But hey, it has expanded since I first got into the fandom. The mere fact that people other than me have written Snow/Bigby fics proves this. Dammit, I'm holding out hope it'll happen within my lifetime.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 08:56 pm (UTC)
I would think that would be flattering. And while I've had no luck far pimping out Fables, I retain hope. It's always good when the fic writers number besides yourself.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 09:01 pm (UTC)
Oh, yeah. But it gets harder to really get a rant on with things you take issue with. If your fandom works out an elaborate explanation that they all agree on to explain a goof you made, you should accept it and shut the fuck up. That, or claim that's what you meant to do all along. *shakes fist at Willingham*

And I'll help you with the pimping out when I eventually get my laptop back -- being able to give a free taste with bootleg digital copies works to our advantage.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 09:10 pm (UTC)
Oh, dish. (If you don't feel comfortable in lj-land, my im screen name is the same as my lj, and my e-mail's redbrunja@yahoo.com)

I may beg you for bootleg digital copies when I get to the point where the library stops carrying fables.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 09:20 pm (UTC)
It's more a matter of needing to rant where Bill doesn't read my ranting. So I'll take this as free reign to rant away . . . er, how far along are you, again? A vague point -- when #49 came out, my first thought was "Set Bill Willingham on fire." which stuck in my head for about ten minutes. Then I wrote an elaborate AU which I have set in my mind as being canon, to explain the problematic bit.

No need to beg -- I'll send 'em on as soon as I get my hands on them, anyway.
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 09:33 pm (UTC)
I just finished... I think it's five? The one where Boy Blue goes back to the homelands, kicks ass, had a backup plans for everything, and was all around awesome. (But had NO Snow or Bigby whatsoever, which was sad.)
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 09:38 pm (UTC)
That'd be 'Homelands', volume 6. Two more to go in the trades, and you'll be caught up! (and yes, the extreme gap with no Snow or Bigby was frustrating)

Well, this guy on the boards who worked out an AWESOME timeline noticed that Snow's pregnancy couldn't have taken more than four months. But averaging the time of gestation for extreme cases of multiple births and the gestation period of a wolf (since the kids are half wolf), this worked out perfectly.

But Bill Willingham mentioned the guy in an interview, saying, effectively, "Haha, this guy went to all that work, but it was really a full nine months and I suck at timelines."
Friday, March 23rd, 2007 12:03 am (UTC)
Oh, that's just bad. What you should do, imho, is say, 'I goofed, but luckily it worked out really well.'

*shakes head* Yeah, that was the wrong thing to say.
Friday, March 23rd, 2007 03:26 am (UTC)
Yeah, it's -- some days, I feel like I enjoy Fables more in concept than reality. A nasty bit of reader torture here, a characterization twist that feels off there . . . *sigh* I need to write more fanfic. It's very thereputic.
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 01:00 am (UTC)
Fanfic is very thereputic. I know I've written fic because some bit of characterization just needed a better explaination than the one we were given by the show. But what is the 'reader torture' and 'characterization' twists are you talking about? (I love rants, I really do.)

I know I've often wished that Fables was a little less bleak all the time, but I can't remember an instance where I felt truly tortured. (Oh god, they don't make Snow whimpy in the next book, do they? *shudders*)
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 01:46 am (UTC)
Reader torture -- well, it's not as bad for you since you're reading the trades, but I had to wait about two years between Snow and Bigby parting and their reunion. Pretty much the same wait until we finally learn the cubs' names. Not to mention the fake cover for #50.

And -- fuck, Bigby left because he couldn't see his kids and because he saw this as a smackdown from Snow, even though it was fairly rational. When Snow sent the seventh kid off to find his father, this was something of a peace offering -- Snow was reaching out to him and giving him a chance to be a father, raise at least one of his children, and one who would need more care than most.

There is no way in hell I can accept ANYTHING in the mundy world keeping Bigby from giving that kid 110% of his attention. Had it been something like him splitting his time with giving the smackdown to the Adversary's forces that were coming through a previously unknown portal or something to that effect, I'd accept it. But - gah.

I'm trying to hold back on the detail to avoid spoilering, but -- I'm just going to link the fic I wrote when I send you #49. Others have told me it let the issue make some friggin' sense for them.
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 02:02 am (UTC)
Two years? *shudders*

You mean the author expects me to buy that Bigby wouldn't be an insanely involved father? *is already annoyed* Yeah, I can't wait until I'm all caught up and you don't have to watch your words. (Which I really appreciate, by the way.)
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 02:16 am (UTC)
Willingham tried to excuse it as Bigby needing a distraction to keep him from going to be with Snow and the kids (and the associated slaughter of anyone who tried to stand in his way), but being a father to one of them would do that.

*bites tongue* It got better after that.
Saturday, March 24th, 2007 03:35 am (UTC)
*bites tongue with you*

I have a feeling I'll be ranting about it when I read it. ^_^
