Does anyone have any examples for the Boring But Practical that aren't from video games or real life?

Also, can someone explain this joke?

Bag of Holding is a D&D reference, TARDIS is Dr. Who. I think the second fan is referring to how massive a geek Fan 1 is being by making a joke, hence: "You're never going to get laid."

Yep. And it's a particularly geeky sort of comparison because both are objects that are bigger on the inside than they are on the outside, which makes it even nerdier than just taking random items from Fandom A and Fandom B; picking those two shows that the first fan is nerdy enough to know geek-trivia about both franchises. Hence the "answer" being "you're too big a geek to get any play".

Ahh. See, I knew that about Bag of Holding, but I don't watch Dr. Who at all.

The TARDIS is essentially a Bag of Holding in the shape of a phone booth, that also happens to be able to travel in space and time. Oh, and it may be somewhat sentient, too. ;)

(Why yes, I am a huge geek... *snickers*)

No fooling, that TARDIS thing sounds like it's made of awesome. XD

What is it with these phone booths, anyway? Superhero transformations, journeys through time...

Well, the obvious practical-but-boring answer is the phone booth (or police callbox like the Tardis...sort of a specialized phone booth) gives you a handy, human-sized and unremarkable portal for scene/costume changes, which allowed the comic creators and TV directors to gloss over bits that would be boring to draw, or difficult to film given their low budget. Build a convincingly alien-looking craft or come up with camera FX for a matter-transporter thingy and you've got to invest a lot of time and money, in those pre-digital days...but a basic callbox was doubtlessly already sitting around the studio backlot. ;)

Geeks? In my lj? Well I never!

The horror! The horror! XD

You would not believe the amount I just spent on a Korean BJD, in large part because she is just PERFECT for dolly-size Katara cosplay and I am still *bitter* that the schmucks at Nickelodeon didn't make ANY of their awesome girls into toys. I wanted to give you guys money but did you make anything for me to buy? Noooooooo. Well, fuck that noise, I'm gonna geek out hardcore and make my own Kat and she's gonna be a million times better than anything those losers could have come up with. *huffs in fangirl rage, etc.*

Sweeeeeet

You MUST post pictures. And I am bitter as well. I once saw plushy Zukos and Katara's in one of those toy-grab machines, but they were both fugly as hell.

Well, fuck that noise, I'm gonna geek out hardcore and make my own Kat and she's gonna be a million times better than anything those losers could have come up with

I have no doubt that this is true. ^_^

Well, it's gonna be a while before she even gets in my hands, and I'm not going to start working on anything that fitted until I have my model in person. But here's the base wig/eyes/outfit she's shipping with -- it's doll-cosplay as Odile (http://img.iplehouse.com/co_img006/iplehouse/etc/swan_cocori_dt1.jpg), the black swan from Swan Lake:

But I'm also getting a spare head with a wider-eyed expression that's probably the main one I'll use for Kat:

I'll need to get a straight wig to braid and do loopies with, but I like the texture of the one she's coming with for when her hair is loose, so I'm going to wait and see what it looks like in person before I decide if I want to stick with that more reddish-brown or go for a darker shade...

*dies of the pretty*

Oh my god that is going to look so very, very incredible. You should make an extra and sell it on ebay for insane amounts of money.

Isn't she gorgeous? It's hard to find resin dolls with darker skin colors, apparently the more pigment (be it natural or unnatural shades) they put into the mix, the harder it is to get them to come out evenly, so a lot of companies don't offer much beyond a pretty weak "suntan" shade (and they all charge extra for their trouble, natch). I'd never really jonesed for a doll until someone on my flist mentioned her own Iple doll about a year and a half ago, and I idly wandered over to their site. I was really impressed by their more realistic sculpts and lovely range of skin tones, and when I saw this girl I damn near fainted at seeing such a perfect AU ballerina!Katara.

I can't see myself getting a whole doll just for resale, even the basic versions that aren't part of a limited edition are still pricey, and bulky and fragile enough to be a pain to ship -- it'd be simpler and cheaper to mail just the outfit alone if folks are interested in commissions when I'm done. (She's almost two feet tall! Although that size is part of the appeal, the tiny pattern pieces won't be as annoyingly fiddly to work compared to doing Barbie-size clothes, which was my original idea for DIY Avatar dolls. Plus she's way more posable so you can set her up like an action figure for bending scenes!)

And I'm such a geek, I even got a braided wig so I can do an Egyptian cosplay of my girl Mara to go with that lovely brown skin and big blue eyes of hers, too...oh, my head's spinning with the fun crafty dress-up plans I have for this girl. XD

Tons of pictures. *Tons* I simply DEMAND it.
Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 06:31 am (UTC)
But of course! :)

(And just you wait until I find a red/burgundy wig in the right length and texture to make her into a girl Gojyo, too!)

LOL!

Thank you so much for the clarification! I would have NEVER gotten that, and the double larger on the inside jokes.
Friday, March 20th, 2009 06:09 am (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the clarification.

I wonder if Lee and Gai's taijutsu techniques fall under this category? (Lotus gate excluded). Perhaps Tenten's proficiency at weaponry?

Ah, the D&D reference sent my heart all a-twitter <333333

Possibly Lee and Gai's taijutu, but since Tenten pulls weapons out of a scroll, I think that's a little too badass to be called 'boring'.
