Sakura Con Report

I was, as some of you know, away at Sakura Con this weekend. The following is my biased and severely abridged report.

THE BAD:

Getting to Sakura Con. On Friday, the weather was slightly hellish. It was hot enough to  wear shorts and a tank top, and we were stuck in traffic in a car that only had 4-80 air conditioning. (Unroll all four windows, drive at 80 mph.)

Also, with the windows open, it was quite the olfactory experience: cow smell, more cow smell, sawdust, exhaust, cow smell, chemicals, concrete.

When we got to the hotel, they didn’t provide complementary parking (FUCKERS!) so I had to pay and obscene amount to keep my car from having the hubcaps stolen or getting ticketed.

My preregistration got lost, so I had to pay more than I expected to get in.

The dance on Saturday played crappy music.

THE GOOD:

There were some awesome amvs. There were two for cowboy bebop that I’d love to find, one focusing on Faye, with a cool song. Also, there was a hilarious Shinji + Shinji’s dad vid to ‘you’re not gay.’ The Naruto vids were hilarious, and almost make me want to watch that show. (Naruto’s naked girls jujitsu is so so so funny.)

A great panel on slash (I know, I can’t believe I’m saying this either.) It talked all about gender as a construct, instead of a biological fact, and how sometimes someone of the opposite sex and present the ideal of a gender in a way that someone already of that sex can’t.

Which was followed by a fun panel on non conventional pairings, which was a lot of fun.

Seeing Seras Victoria’s voice actress. Oh my gods, she’s such a cutie! She looks all indian and adorable and when she does the accent you just want to take her home with you.

The cosplay.

pzb. She’s the first person who I’ve met online first and then in real life, and she’s awesome. I had a ball talking with her about Saiyuki and insane cleavage and art and music, etc, etc.

She also gave me this wonderfully sexy Hakkai pic that I can’t wait to put up on my wall.

In short, pzb: made of awesome. (And I totally owe her fic.)

Which brings us to,

THE SWAG:

I got, as mentioned above, a lovely Hakkai pic.

1 Lust bookmark, also done by pzb.

2 Key chains, one with Lust and Roy and one with Roy and Riza, both in cute chibi form.

FMA manga, volume 8, containing Riza being awesome and totally pwning Barry the Chopper, with bonus protective Roy.

3 small posters, one of the Saiyuki boys, one of Riza looking happy, and one with Ed, Al, Roy, Riza and Havoc all looking hot and competent and ready to kick ass.

You must be exhausted. I'm feeling rather peppy, but I got a nap and ate like a real person tonight. And still, I should be getting to bed. (But I still need to make my lunch for tomorrow, and then Yaone is being so interesting...)

It might take me a couple of weeks, but I'd love to write you something. (I have a challange breathing down my neck right now which is made of evil.) Any requests? Preferences? Kinks?

Hotels are bitches. But I'm glad you had a fun time at the con. I remember seeing all sorts of coplayers outside of it last year. I was visiting my older sister for the weekend and we were waiting for our bus. We had an entertaining time ogling at the cosplayers.

Yeah, watching the cosplay is one of the most consistantly entertaining parts of con. That must have been a fun wait for the bus.

glad you had a good time. the hotel thing reminds me of the one in FL (general SF con not anime) where they even charged VENDORS for parking. a lot of them swore never to come back.

Norwescon parking was a bitch too.

Did the cosplayers of your crowd get good reactions? There were only one or two at Norwescon (I think Sakuracon got the ones we've had before), including a small Sakura from Naruto, and a White Mage from Final Fantasy, carrying a dolfie dressed to match.

Parking is evil.

My roommate and friend, who dressed as the twins for Ouran, got awesome reactions, as did sand3, who apparently got her picture taken by the Seattle Times. (She was Tamaki and Sailor Moon midtransformation)

I didn't get too many recongitions, even when I was dressed as Lust from FMA, who I thought would have been very reconigizable. Ah, well, they're always next year.

Thank you. I had maybe two person ask for my picture, and I was, if I do say so myself, an excellent Lust- every time I say an Ed I'd go up, call him short, and ask why 'he' hadn't gotten the Philospoher's Stone yet.
