So, when I got back from college, I finagled it so I had one free bookshelf for library and to-read books.

I was thinking this would
It's already full, even before I got to the library.

The Summer Reading List:

All The Fishes Come Home To Roost, Dracula (the original), The Sound & The Fury, Nation, The Audacity of Hope, Coin Locker Babies, Blood Cult, White Witch Black Curse, Wicked Lovely, Song of the Lioness (reread), Finders Keepers, Whitechapel Gods, Kitty & The Midnight Hour (reread) A Necessary Evil, Soul Music, Soon I Will Be Invincible, and a couple volumes of Basara

*deep breath*

Just to let you know? All the books I mentioned? Don't all fit of my To-Read bookshelf. So much for my clever plot.

Even double-shelved?

It's a dirty trick, but it's the only way I ever get a slight majority of my books on there.

I also find that stacking them and turning them sideways works marvelously if the shelves aren't quite deep enough for that, as long as they aren't too shallow.
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 01:50 am (UTC)
That might work.
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 01:52 am (UTC)
It's not quite deep enough. And I want the titles to be visible - otherwise I forget what I have to read and end up getting NEW books.

(Not that knowing what I have to read stops me, but....)

This sounds similar to when I got a new bookcase (waist high) convinced that I would finally have enough shelving, only to end up with piles of books on top of it.

I quite adored the worldbuilding and general ideas behind Wicked Lovely, and I suspect you'll spot my favorite character pretty quickly, but it had a bit of "your kinks aren't mine" going at times (not skeevy gender issues kinks, thankfully) and was more dismissive of a couple things than I thought it should be. I have the sequel lurking around the top of my TBR list.

This surprises me not at all.

Heh, my to-read shelf is actually built into my bed. ^^;

Ah, how wide are the shelves? Can you maybe fit a row infront of each row? One of my shelves is super-wide, so that's how I have them stacked, with the YA that I own on the inside, and everything else facing out.

I'll be curious to see what you think of Wicked Lovely - one female I know you'll love, I'm curious as to what you'll think of the other characters.

I'll let you know what I think of Wicked Lovely when I read it.

My shelves aren't wide enough to do double layers, but I do have some paperbacks stacked up on top of the hardbacks.

Oooh. I'll have to look into those. I've been thinking of what books to get into once I have money again after my car is fixed. (I've been re-reading some old ones that I haven't read in years, which is also cool. Currently Zelazney's Amber series.)

Also, I LOVE the Song of the Lioness quartet. :) I'm about due for a re-red on that one too. *grin*

Please do. I'd love to have someone to talk to about them.

Books tend to expand to fill all available space, and then some. I've been considering actually BUYING some new shelves, that's how bad it's gotten here, but I have terrifying visions of the floor collapsing under the weight. (Although then again, the thought of burying the creepy old nutter downstairs in an avalanche of manga does have a certain charm...)
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 03:09 am (UTC)
They do! It's evil!

And are they yaoi manga? Because the thought of a creepy nutter being smushed under a horde of yaoi manga is kinda delightful.

Don't they just? There was a brief, shining moment when I'd acquired a few extra shelves and didn't buy/Mooch that many new books shortly thereafter where everything fit, but...stuff still comes in faster than it moves out, and I'm back to having the overspill stacked up on spare chairs...

And really, the stuff in the front room includes about 90% of my manga collection, so it's not all yaoi, not by a longshot, but there's definitely a fair bit! And now I want to go fetch the extra-smutty BL titles, and the polymorphously perverse porny Western comics, that are shelved in a different room and bring 'em up here, just to make the mental image even better. ;)

(Also, ZOMG, is that evil-mirrorverse Major Kira? OVERWHELMING ICON LOVE.)

That is truly the dream.

(Also, ZOMG, is that evil-mirrorverse Major Kira? OVERWHELMING ICON LOVE.)

Isn't it? I saw the icon and just went 'OMG must upload'. Especially because, while it's been a long time since I've watched DS9, Kira was pretty damn badass, Mirror version or not.

At that point, I would get one of my tupperware storage boxes, tip it on its side, and shelve in THERE. >8O Or...temporarily move books into aforementioned container to make room for other, shinier, to-read books.

Sounds like good reading!
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 03:08 am (UTC)
These actually ARE the shiny, to-read books.

And if I pack them away, they'll never, ever get read.

Cool. My mom and I have summer reading lists too. For me: Bloodhound (by Tamora Pierce, sequel to Terrier), Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Crossed: A Tale of the Fourth Crusade (Reread, one of my most favorite books ever), The Welsh Girl, and Suite Francaise. For my mom: Cry Wolf, Tale of Two Cities, The Welsh Girl, and Suite Francaise.

I ran out of shelf space for books a LONG time ago. Currently they occupy the desk and floor of my room.

I am biting my nails waiting for my hold on Bloodhound to show up. I adored Terrier so much - I haven't enjoyed a Pierce book that hardcore since the Immortals Trilogy. You can really see the depth her world has developed and she's clearly bringing her A game to that book.

Oh,haha. People get a fit when they stumble into my room. I have about 30 TR books spread beside my bed. Quite an imposing sight, really. I can't seem to stop myself from borrowing/buying when it comes to books. D:

Don't know if you're interested in recs (since you've got so many here already, hah), but 'The Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins is... WHOA. Very, very whoa. Absolutely epic.
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 07:24 am (UTC)
That does sound impressive.

And what is Hunger Games about?
Monday, June 22nd, 2009 07:39 am (UTC)
Well, I'd classify it as an action/romance/survival young-adult book. A teenage girl is forced to compete in a 24-man-enters-1-man-leaves battle. To say more would be giving it away, but lemme just say this - there is so much complexity to this book. It's so gripping, and it sucks your emotions dry. If you loved Alanna, I think you'll eat this one up.

Any good recs from you?

If you haven't read Pierce's "Terrier" yet, do. It's fabulous.

Same with most of Sarah Dessen's work (I'd reccomend "Just Listen") and I'm really enjoying a book called 'Soon I Will Be Invincible" which is kinda of similar to Watchmen expect with actually likable characters and a sense of humor. Also, for a good mystery, The Killing Hour by Lisa Gardner.
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 11:45 am (UTC)
GAH I loved 'Just Listen', as well as 'The Truth About Forever'. Seems like we have somewhat compatible tastes, so I'll check out your recs sometime soon. Haven't read the other ones you suggested.

Have I recced you 'Hunting and Gathering' yet? It's such a good book to read when you're cold. Warms your heart right up. ^_^

We Do have very compatible tastes. And no, I haven't read hunting and gathering.
