this week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 :

Name five effective uses of songs in movies or tv shows.

5.) Sarah McLaughlan's "Full of Grace" in Buffy's second season finale. Such a classic, I couldn't NOT put it on this list.

4.) "Don't Fear The Reaper" in Supernatural's "Faith" while the Reaper kills that jogger. I like loving that moment (or at least laughing with the show) is a make-it-or-break-it fannish moment.

3.) Chuck 2x07, the end of the episode. I saw the plot twist coming a mile away, but the cuts between Chuck and Jill making love and Casey and Sarah in the basement and then rushing through Chuck's house while "Keep Yourself Warm" by Frightened Rabbit plays was epic.

2.) Gossip Girl 1x10, Blair/Chuck make-outs to "You're A Wolf" by Sea Wolf.

1.) Life 2x01, "Living In A Devil's Playground" while Reese and Crews find the bodies lock in a truck. Everytime I hear 'there's some man who's started a war and I feel like knocking on heaven's door' I see them climbing the staircase up to the third body.

God, I am such a sucker for music-in-movies. I almost always fall for them, whether they're good or not. (Though it IS a wonder I don't enjoy music videos quite as much, as the good ones are essentially the same thing.) I shall have to check these out, sometime!

I don't like it when it's bad, but when it's done well or even competently, it's amazing and really raises the scene up.

Gossip Girl's music are awesome. Sometimes they're really cheeky to the accompanying scene, and sometimes it's just plain good to hear.

Blair/Chuck's tunes usually some of the bests, though.. I love your pick, but I'm more in love with "One Week of Danger" by The Virgins at the beginning of 1x08, the scene where Blair confesses to the priest and got flashbacks. Hee.

How far are you in Gossip Girl, by the way? Since I remember that the finale also has some interesting music.

*nods*

Normally, when I find a show with good music, that's were I get my new sounds. With Gossip Girl, however, they'll start playing a song and I'll go 'oh my god I love that song and have been listening obsessively for weeks!' or 'that song, that song! I love it and it's already on my iPod.'

Which is really cool, imho.

I'm in the middle of season 2 - I just finished episode 9.

Sarah McLachlan's songs are effective in any television or movie scene, period. There is this Jodie Foster film I saw some months back and they had her song "Answer" in the rolling credits. I was disappointed in the film, but I felt the song seemed perfect for Foster's character.

There is something universal about Sarah McLauchlan's songs.
