Dead Beat is just about my least favorite Dresden Files and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. All I know is that after the epic Harry/Murphy conversation and Bob being scary as fuck it's one long slog until RESURRECTED TYRANNOSAURUS REX! Plus, Luccio being amazingly badass, Rameriez being hysterical, and Morgan being himself. In retrospect, knowing that Morgan is in love with Luccio makes that whole scene where she's switched into the younger body even more intense. I'm still pissed Morgan is dead. I wanted to see him and Harry being buddy cops more! We needed more time for Luccio/Morgan and Morgan appreciating Molly's assets and snarking about what she has and hasn't learned! (Note how the last three sentences aren't even about the book at hand?)

Also, is it just me or did the conversation between Kakashi and his dead father seem eerily similar in setting to Harry's conversation with his dead father in Dead Beat?

Dead Beat has always been my favorite, that might be because it was the first DF that I read. Also, I feel that it was THE book where Butcher struck the perfect balance between description and pacing; I felt Small Favor and Turn Coat have been a little rushed. He did better with Turn Coat, but it took me longer to care about Small Favor.

DB was also my Urban Fantasy initiation, so I might be a little soft on it.

Honestly, I think you're on to something with looking at the pacing. I think I prefer the more frenetic pacing of the other books. (I'm actually reading proven guilty right now, and I think it might be my favorite.)

And no, the conversation between Harry and his father didn't seem similar to the conversation with Kakashi and his father beyond male character talking to daddy dearest. For one thing, we got a hell of a lot more information from Harry's dad, and it was a much better written. Also there was no lame deux ex machina and Schrodinger's Harry BS going on.
