Judging from [livejournal.com profile] fandom_secrets, there appears to be a segment of the Merlin fandom that is both

a.) disappointed

and

b.) surprised

that the show is going to make Guinevere/Arthur canon, instead of Merlin/Arthur.

....

To which I can only ask, were you dropped on the head as a child? Did you actually think the BBC was going to change the CORE of the Arthurian legend in order to fulfill your slash fantasies? Really now. I can understand being disappointed, but don't be dumb about it. You should know that the family-centric show is not going to change an epic, classic myth to be progressive. (Not saying I don't want gays on my child-friendly programming, but that particular set of homosexuals was never going to happen.)

Oh Merlin Fandom, why so predictable?

off-topic: IS THAT CALVIN&HOBBES ICON? Where can I find them?

This made me giggle. What can I say? Some people have no brains. :D

Also, you totally just made six posts in a row. I applaud you.

Clearly, they should should make a syndicated show about old mythology and folklore starring Gilgamesh and Enkidu, one of the oldest heroic nakama around. They fight for a day and a night and tear up an entire city before embracing eachother in a big manly Sumerian hug and becoming best buddies. The slash is all but canon. Ishtar as the crazy violent war/sex goddess that wants to take Enkidu away from his friend and into a sensual but ultimately destructive relationship is also canon.

Some people argue it goes downhill in the second season though, when Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh spends the first part utterly emo and destroyed, and the second part wandering to the ends of the earth alone and trying to discover how he can win back his friend from the underworld. On the other hand.

You know, I haven't even had a chance to watch the show, and I could still see this coming a mile away. When the show first came out and everyone was like: "zomg Merlin/Arthur!", I was like: "...you guys are going to be disappointed in the eventual future."

So yeah, I'm with you and massage my temples a bit at the stupidity. I mean, I can understand disappointment, but surprise? Oh come on.

While Arthur/Merlin (and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't typically slash) and Guinevere/Morgana may be WAY more interesting, XDDD the thought of someone seriously thinking that was going to happen in canon is hilarious.

FFFFFFFFFFF. I saw that too, and had the same reaction. I actually bitched out my computer screen. Something along the lines of being one of the most delusionally retarded things I've ever seen anyone say.

All issues of progression aside, you CANNOT alter the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot/Morgana love entanglement without completely deconstructing the foundation of the entire storyline. Those relationships drive the outcome. Take them away and it's no longer the Arthurian Legend.

Besides, I don't think the secret poster cares about progression. They only care about their slash fantasy, which like many slashers, they convinced themselves was real. You want to really be progressive with this story? Make Guinevere a warrior queen.

Ahahahaha...^^; Wow...that is amusingly sad. I guess any epic legends being changed at their foundations for progressiveness isn't exactly too ideal unless under very special circumstances.
