Title: Another Flashing Chance
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries.
Characters: Damon/Elena.
Rating: PG-13
Author's Note: written for [livejournal.com profile] schmoop_bingo , "unexpected date."
Summery: "Damon was not entirely convinced that it was really Elena who had called and asked for a ride out of town until Mystic Falls was seventy-five miles behind them."

Damon was not entirely convinced that it was really Elena who had called and asked for a ride out of town until Mystic Falls was seventy-five miles behind them.

For one thing, unless Katherine had changed greatly, he couldn't imagine her quietly watching the scenery (green, boring, rain-wet) with a melancholy expression on her face for forty-five minutes straight. For another, when she finally realized that the car was silent, Katherine wouldn't have settled on a Death Cab For Cutie song to accompany her woe-begone expression.

"Oh, Elena Gilbert, no," he said and switched the station. "I just picked you up at an obscenely reasonable hour of the morning so you could be terrible company despite the ridiculously attractive man chauffeuring you around in a classic car, the least you could do is pick some decent tunes."

He fiddled around with the radio until he found a classical station playing Tchaikovsky.

"There. If you're going to brood, brood with pathos," he instructed. "If you're good, I'll let you listen to the Doors later."

Elena looked at him in surprise, mouth this cute little 'o', like she was surprised he was there or like he should be respecting her need to pine unmocked. Well, if she wanted someone sincere she should have called his brother.

"Why didn't you call my brother?" he asked.

She gazed at him for a long moment, looking like she was puzzling something out and then her eyes widened with horror.

"Truck! Truck!" she yelled, "Damon, watch the road."

He lazily swerved back into his lane, a generous foot between his front bumper and the grill of a break truck. Really, he had plenty of time. There was no need for Elena to start screaming and throwing cd cases at him.

Then he was sure she was Elena because there was no way Katherine would have actually made him pull over and let her drive just because he got kiiiiinnnnnnddddddd of close to one measly delivery vehicle.

"Controlling bitch is a good look on you," he informed her twenty-five miles later, the aforementioned Doors playing.

Elena didn't answer.

Damon crossed his right leg over his opposite knee, jiggled his foot to the beat.

"My biological father called," she said after a while, precise, lips forming the words crisply. "He said he had information about what Katherine is doing in Mystic Falls."

"Huh," Damon said, blasé, like hearing Katherine's name out of Elena's mouth didn't sting as much as it always did. He leaned over the seat and grabbed Elena's bag. Mace, a taser, some vervain.

"Were you ever a girl scout by any chance?" Damon asked. "And your neglecting to tell Stefan about this is now a self-explanatory decision."

"I'm not not telling Stefan about this," Elena said, already working out her justification. "I'm just not telling him right at this moment. I'll drive to Charlottesville, I'll see what John has to say, you'll keep him in line, and then, when I get back and am clearly safe and Stefan is feeling a little more stable with the whole drinking blood thing, then I'll tell him."

"Yeah, 'cause there's no way that plan could go wrong," Damon rolled his eyes and then slid across the seat, putting his mouth right up against her ear. "Don't worry," he breathed, "I'm very good at being discreet about my dates with Stefan's girlfriends."

"This isn't a date," Elena said hotly, but her pulse kicked up anyway.

"But you're driving me down to the big city to meet your daddy," he said in a light, delighted voice. "I think it's getting se-rious." He sing-songed the last word.

"Damon, knock it off," Elena said, "I only called you for a ride because Caroline wasn't answering her phone. That's it." She lifted her chin and turned up the music.

Damon set his feet on the dash and didn't mention that Caroline had spent the night sleeping on the living room couch and that her phone hadn't rung once.

*flails with delight*

THESE TWO. This is exactly how I always want them to interact!

"There. If you're going to brood, brood with pathos," he instructed. "If you're good, I'll let you listen to the Doors later."

HAHAHA YES!

"Controlling bitch is a good look on you," he informed her twenty-five miles later, the aforementioned Doors playing.

PERFECT!

just because he got kiiiiinnnnnnddddddd of close to one measly delivery vehicle.

I love that you wrote that word like that because it is EXACTLY how Damon would have thought it.

Damon set his feet on the dash and didn't mention that Caroline had spent the night sleeping on the living room couch and that her phone hadn't rung once.

Perfect ending is perfect.

This was too much fun!

I may possibly find it too easy to write Damon.

Damon set his feet on the dash and didn't mention that Caroline had spent the night sleeping on the living room couch and that her phone hadn't rung once.

Perfect ending is perfect.

This was too much fun!

I'm glad you liked it!

EEEEEEEEEEE!

This is DELIGHTFUL.

"But you're driving me down to the big city to meet your daddy," he said in a light, delighted voice. "I think it's getting se-rious." He sing-songed the last word.

I can so easily hear this in my head, it's wild.

Then I'm doing my job right!

Yeah, Elena is a very grounding influence.

Hehe loved this! It was cute! :D I loved the ending where Caroline's phone didn't ring once and that Elena clearly wanted to go with Damon. Great job! Short but sweet story. <3

Yeah, I wanted to make it clear that even if she wasn't about to admit it to him, Elena chose Damon to go with her.

This is lovely--and totally believable "schmoop" for this pairing, which I feel is really rough to achieve, lol. Your Damon is fantastic, great work.

Thank you! The hardest part of D/E schmoop, I've found, is getting Stefan realistically out of the picture. I like him, and he and Elena work, so it's much harder than writing the canon boyfriend out of the picture usually is!

Thank you very much!

(Randomly, did this fic get linked somewhere? Because you're the second person tonight who's commented on it, and it was posted weeks ago.)

You're welcome. :)

No, I don't think so. I just felt boring and am quite D/E obsessed (even more than usually) since yesterday, so I've searched for fics and ended up here.^^

Well, I'm very glad you did!

why didn't he say it just to shut her up. why didn't he accuse of her lying...
Thursday, November 11th, 2010 10:37 am (UTC)
Several reasons. The main one is that Damon isn't a dummy (most of the time). He knows that if Elena's not comfortable admitting that she wanted him to go on this roadtrip with her, forcing her to admit it isn't going to go anywhere good. Secondly, this is a sign that Elena's feelings for him are growing, and he's going to want to nurture that.

Basically, he's goal isn't to shut her up, it's to encourage her to fall in love with him, and letting her keep her pride and comfort zone with regards to their relationship is in his best interests.

You have me there.

There was no need for Elena to start screaming and throwing cd cases at him.
Bahaha ♥

This entire piece was EPIC!

I'm a total TVD newbie and I multi-ship like nobody's business. I think I'm liking the Damon/Elena vibe.

Sidenote: Would it be ok if I added you as a friend?

I dunno, he might not have pulled over otherwise....

Sidenote: Would it be ok if I added you as a friend?

That would be totally cool!

You were recced on het_reccers! I love road trip fic. This was short and snappy and very IC, particularly your Damon, who is so droll and sing-songy that I can totally picture him eye-thinging all over the place!

He fiddled around with the radio until he found a classical station playing Tchaikovsky.

"There. If you're going to brood, brood with pathos," he instructed. "If you're good, I'll let you listen to the Doors later."

Haha! Damon would so secretly brood to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, though I'm sure he finds Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata too "obvious". ;)

Oh, and the last bit with the Caroline lie excuse? Priceless.

I got a notification about that this morning and it totally made my day!

*looks innocent* I may have considered using Moonlight Sonata and then decided it was too obvious....

Oh, and the last bit with the Caroline lie excuse? Priceless.

Thank you! I wanted to make clear that Elena was clearly making a choice about who she was going to Charlottesville with.
