I Am Not Ready For Autumn

When I walked out of work today (at the oh so advanced hour of 2:30 pm) the shadows were already starting to grow long and the air had a distinctive, autumnal lack of warmth. I am not thrilled about this. Especially given that in two weeks, I'll set back the clocks, so it will get dark even earlier.

On a completely different note, Reba has a new song out, called "Turn On The Radio."

Now, I'm not a big country fan, but I have a fondness for Reba, and this is a catchy tune, but why the hell does every single country artist ever need to write a song that's all 'dear ex: suck it, I'm famous now, bet you're regretting not treating me better now, huh? Vengefully yours, country singer.'

Don't any of them start writing and then go 'wait a minute, I've heard this song a billion times' and then scrap it?

Apparently not.

To be fair it's not just country, and I think it's probably because 'I want you to see how I have moved on from you in a kickass fashion'/'Want you to realise you missed out on my awesome because you hurt me' are themes in people's lives that will always be relavent to *someone*?

Reba is awesome and feminist and I, personally, was introduced to her at a very impressionable age.

True, although that said, I wish somebody could do that theme in a more fresh way.

Funnily enough, I really love that theme! Except every time it's actually rendered on paper (so to speak) I loathe it. I think part of it (because my exposure to country music is smaller, filtered through my dad's taste, and he's never really evinced interest towards that sort of thing) is that so often the whole 'vengeance/Take That' thing is really centred around the ex, which makes it not really a Take That at all, because to be a satisfying Take That it would be about having actually found happiness, and too often the focus makes me feel like they haven't moved on at all and that their focus is on the ex rather than themselves and new significant other.

So you're saying that you like it in theory but not in practice?

(Also, with these songs I am always bugged by the assumption that the ex wants the singer back. What if they were like, 'yeah, my ex made it big, but frankly, no amount of money/fame would have made it worth putting up with his/her issues.'
