Drive-By Post Before I Vanish To Do Laundry

Someone online mentioned a Beauty & The Beast Castle that I need to go see while I'm in France. Is this ringing anyone's bells?

Also...

-What does Gojyo's shampoo smell like? I assume, with his hair, he probably using something fairly quality, but I can't think of what. I'm tempted to go with Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, which smells minty and green and tingles pleasantly, but since that's what I use, I'm not sure it's allowed.

-During the summer [profile] pzb, my mother, possibly [profile] renegadekitsuneand I had a conversation about the ikkou's musical taste, which is notable for the way every single person said immediately, 'Gojyo listens to rock.' Which is kind of a gimme, but still, aren't we sympathico? So my question is, what are the ikkou's musical guilty pleasures? What is the music that Gojyo plays that Hakkai actually likes? For Gojyo himself, I think he wouldn't admit to liking Ray Lamontagne, but would because that artist  has this wonderful sense of romance combined with the doubt that love even exists. (Go listen to "Jolene" - it's gorgeous and totally on my 'Forget Me Not' playlist, and only [personal profile] smillaraaqis going to know what that means.)

Also, I went to Giverny today, which is where Monet painted and it was utterly gorgeous and so, so peaceful, I just wanted to stay there listening to music and looking at the flowers, in this lovely, hazy misty morning, with a truly lovely dove-gray sky and the birds chirping.

What was less fun was that while I was walking to Monet's house I had my head turned and walked straight into the lamp post that was for some unfathomable reason in the middle of the sidewalk. Seriously, it was a total slap-stick moment; I expected to see Charlie Chaplan hanging around. Almost as painful as it was embarrassing.

See, I've known enough guys with really pretty long hair that they took really horrible care of, that I can sort of see Gojyo just grabbing whatever stuff was the cheapest, or the first thing he saw on the shelf, and maybe not being so fussy about what it smells like since he does smoke a lot. If he were to be fussy about shampoo I can see it maybe being after he notices that the scent of a particular brand really gets him a lot of compliments from the bargirls -- but at the same time, I can sort of see him being a little conflicted about that sort of attention, given all of his ISSUES about his hair?

Along with really loud, crunchy rock, I can almost see Gojyo being a bit into dance music -- maybe not collecting it or listening to it outside of the clubs, but he's so graceful and confident in movement that it seems like he'd be a natural on the dancefloor...ESPECIALLY once he figured out how much women tend to like a man who's a good dancer!

Goku, I'm not so sure about. Sanzo, I think I can mostly tell what he WOULDN'T like -- anything that annoys him, which would probably be anything too loud, or too catchy, or too popular so it's hard to avoid (that goes double for anything Gojyo likes.) I have a feeling that getting earworms would make him really, really grumpy, and he hardly needs any assistance there!

Hakkai strikes me as the classical sort, maybe even an opera lover: all those heightened over-the-top passions and doomed lovers might strike a chord with him, it's a way of wallowing in those intense emotions he doesn't generally let show.

(Oh hey, speaking of music, did you already get the last batch of stuff I uploaded for you last week?)

I think Hakkai would generally listen to classical too, but I think he'd also have a secret love for heavy metal and techno (although I doubt he'd include it in his personal list of favorites. XD)

Ooooh, maybe really operatic artsy metal like Nightwish and Onmyou-za!

(...of course, now my inner 585 shipper will NEVER be able to listen to "Kappa Odori" with a straight face ever again!)

*snort*

What do the lyrics really say?

I've never actually gone looking for Onmyou-za translations, and I'm too crampy and bleary-eyed to hunt right this second. But the band basically sounds a bit like what Nightwish might be like if they were Japanese, and performed in Heian-era formal wear for extra visual appeal. "Kappa Dance" starts out like one of their usual songs, showy metal with dual lead vocalists, one female...but then it just randomly turns into this huge goofy audience-participation bit that looks like it's maybe based on some kind of folk dance. (I know there's at least one town that has a shinto kappa festival with associated dances, but haven't been able to find clips to compare.) It just seems like the sort of thing the guys would all tease him about, to go with all the canon jokes about antennae or the fanon where folks delve into various bits of kappa folklore like the cucumber thing.

(What can I say, easily amused here...kappa maki's always been one of my fave types of sushi, and now it makes me giggle uncontrollably too.)

Oh hell yeah Gojyo is a good dancer. 'Cause you know that he has to be pretty damn graceful to do all the stuff he does with his shajokou, plus the ladies like it, combined with the fact that dancing is a great way to touch people, and chances are, on the dance floor, someone who wouldn't have sex with you will get a little physical on the dance floor.

You're right, Hakkai would really connect with opera.

Frankly, I think Sanzo wouldn't really like any music. He'd consider it a waste of effort/useless noise, imho.

And speaking of music, I just today was able to get the last of those songs. I love 'Gamblers' and 'As for you'. So perfect for Gojyo/Doku. Does Oysterband know they're writing Gojyo's theme songs?

Probably not, but I'm surely not going to tell them and jinx it! ;)

Which reminds me, they've got a new album out for the first time in ages, I need to go check a couple of places that are good for imports and see if they've got it. Being an Oysters fan in the US is not an easy thing.

That reminds me, I really enjoy how I can just hear their accents when they sing. It reminds me of The Waifs. Do you know that band?

Nope, but if you've got any handy I'd love to hear some!

(And if you like accents, I have a bonus track somewhere here where they do a brief reprise of "Native Son" in Welsh. What a gorgeous, tongue-twisty language!)

I'm ALMOST done with that first Saiyuki fanmix, btw...and this funnily enough is turning out to be the first mix I've done that isn't crawling with Oysters tracks! Not for lack of songs that fit thematically, natch, but I ended up going for a very odd moody sound that they didn't fit. Oh well, if I do the gen mix for the ikkou later they'll all go there instead.

It's looking like your Christmas present is going to be a massive music spam. ^_^

I just downloaded your fanmix, and can't wait to give it a listen.

Native son in Welsh... that sounds really interesting.

And I'd love to see a gen fanmix for the ikkou - that's what mine will be, with a couple shipper songs thrown in, but I'm curious what your Sanzo and Goku songs are.

Massive music spams make me very, very happy. :)

The gen piece in my mind so far is going to have a lot more of the upbeat folk-rocky stuff that wasn't fitting quite so well for the sound I ended up going for on this mix. And I'll probably steal a title from the Oysters because while "Gone West" doesn't quite fit so well as I'd like lyrically, the title's too good not to steal. :)

And if you don't mind really random music selections, I'm digging out my Avatar fanmixes to repost for lillypuff, and I know the Welsh track by itself is on there. (It was one of those hidden end-of-CD bonus tracks so I'd had to play around with audio editors to snag it by itself).
