Brave was fantastic.

I had no idea is was going to be as focused on Merida and her mother's relationship as it was, and oh my god, it was so amazing. Both Merida and Helena(?) different types of strength were recognized and respected, the mother/daughter relationship was treated with respect (and was CENTRAL to the story), there was NO love interest, and the marriage Helena and Fergus(?) WAS AMAZINGBALLS.

Like, I cannot get over how much I love that Helena was THE QUEEN, she was pivotal to ruling, she was raising Merida to do the same, and the whole arc of the movie was Helena learning to bend a bit and Merida learning how to use what Helena was teaching her in her own style.

Also, that scene where all the dudes tie their kilts together to get off the tower was hilarious.

YES. My mom and I saw it today and it was just amazing. I can't describe it other than the perfect balance of so many different elements. Plus, Pixar is always so stunning visually.

I was confused on the names, too. I thought it was Helena at the beginning, too, but by the end I thought they were saying 'Elanor'. I wasn't sure if it was Merida or Meredeth, either.

Also, that scene where all the dudes tie their kilts together to get off the tower was hilarious.

I laughed so hard.

They really are. It was well-worth seeing on the big screen.

I wish the ads were doing it justice- your review makes it sound amazing and like something I'd be interested in, but the ads barely even show her mother, and it focuses on slapstick and toilet humor. Not very appealing. :/ It's prob not gonna do well and they'll blame it on a female protag instead of the stupid way it's being promoted (here, at least).

I totally agree. The only reason I've kept wanting to see it is to support Pixar finally doing a female protag because the previews haven't thrilled me. But good to hear lots of good reviews. :D

Yeah, neither this nor Tangled were promoted well AT ALL.

When I found out that the movie was about Merida and her mum, I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to separate myself from my own issues enough to enjoy it. And there were a couple moments close to the beginning, but aside from that, it was just this BEAUTIFUL THING with NO ROMANCE and LOTS OF FIGHT SCENES and...yes.

Roger Ebert can go stuff himself, basically.

I always feel that way about Roger Ebert. He's a grumpy, irrational old man and I give his opinion very little weight.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I only skimmed, b/c I haven't seen the movie yet, but basically I have been oh-shit-the-first-Pixar-with-a-female-lead-DON'T-SCREW-THIS-UP-FFSSSSSSS for MONTHS now, so YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

*FIST PUMP*

Yeah, they did a fantastic job with BOTH the main character and her mother, who start the movie with two very different ideas about being a princess.

I was thrilled with it. So very different from what I was expecting. Especially since the trailers had been parts so early in the film. But the character building and development were AMAZING.

And so was Merdia's hair... God, I just kept staring at that.

Also, it's Queen Elinor. Who is BLOODY BRILLIANT.

So gorgeous.

She might just be my favorite part of the film, tbh.

My Spanish subtitles said Elinor.

I was so pleased, because I'd heard the previous director had been fired after she said she wanted to make it a mother-daughter story. Brenda Chapman, who was credited for story. This and the trailers (like with Tangled's promotion and the statement from Disney about movies for girls!) had me worried (though I'd seen a Japanese trailer that was excellent).

But I love that this was all about screwing up, mostly on Mérida's side but out of desperation so it was understandable, and both her and Elinor needing to reach a compromise that respected what the other held to be true. A happy, meaningful mother-daughter story that emphasized the strengths of the characters, especially working together. Which presents them both as role models.

Yes! I really feel that this was a groundbreaking film in both the central conflict, how that was resolved, and THAT MERIDA HAD A HEALTHY, FUNCTIONAL FAMILY WITH BOTH PARENTS WHO LOVED HER. I mean, my god, that's rare.

I hope I have a marriage like Fergus and Helena's some day. Okay, Fergus is not the most industrious king ever but he's a kick ass father and he loves Helena to bits and seemed more than willing to help out with the personal family issues in the movie. My heart broke just a little when he found Helena's dress torn. What must have been going through his head when he saw it?

Like, I cannot get over how much I love that Helena was THE QUEEN, she was pivotal to ruling, she was raising Merida to do the same, and the whole arc of the movie was Helena learning to bend a bit and Merida learning how to use what Helena was teaching her in her own style.

Helena and Merida were my favourite part of this whole movie because it reminded so much of me and my own mother (both having very different strengths and weaknesses). Plus, it taught me to appreciate my own mother more.

Also, that scene where all the dudes tie their kilts together to get off the tower was hilarious.

Yes! And the bit where the children nose dived into the maid's uh... cleavage, had the whole cinema roaring with laughter at my theatre.
