Brave was fantastic.
I had no idea is was going to be as focused on Merida and her mother's relationship as it was, and oh my god, it was so amazing. Both Merida and Helena(?) different types of strength were recognized and respected, the mother/daughter relationship was treated with respect (and was CENTRAL to the story), there was NO love interest, and the marriage Helena and Fergus(?) WAS AMAZINGBALLS.
Like, I cannot get over how much I love that Helena was THE QUEEN, she was pivotal to ruling, she was raising Merida to do the same, and the whole arc of the movie was Helena learning to bend a bit and Merida learning how to use what Helena was teaching her in her own style.
Also, that scene where all the dudes tie their kilts together to get off the tower was hilarious.

I was confused on the names, too. I thought it was Helena at the beginning, too, but by the end I thought they were saying 'Elanor'. I wasn't sure if it was Merida or Meredeth, either.

I laughed so hard.

They really are. It was well-worth seeing on the big screen.

Roger Ebert can go stuff himself, basically.

I always feel that way about Roger Ebert. He's a grumpy, irrational old man and I give his opinion very little weight.

It absolutely was.

And so was Merdia's hair... God, I just kept staring at that.
Also, it's Queen Elinor. Who is BLOODY BRILLIANT.

So gorgeous.

She might just be my favorite part of the film, tbh.

I was so pleased, because I'd heard the previous director had been fired after she said she wanted to make it a mother-daughter story. Brenda Chapman, who was credited for story. This and the trailers (like with Tangled's promotion and the statement from Disney about movies for girls!) had me worried (though I'd seen a Japanese trailer that was excellent).
But I love that this was all about screwing up, mostly on Mérida's side but out of desperation so it was understandable, and both her and Elinor needing to reach a compromise that respected what the other held to be true. A happy, meaningful mother-daughter story that emphasized the strengths of the characters, especially working together. Which presents them both as role models.

Yes! I really feel that this was a groundbreaking film in both the central conflict, how that was resolved, and THAT MERIDA HAD A HEALTHY, FUNCTIONAL FAMILY WITH BOTH PARENTS WHO LOVED HER. I mean, my god, that's rare.

Helena and Merida were my favourite part of this whole movie because it reminded so much of me and my own mother (both having very different strengths and weaknesses). Plus, it taught me to appreciate my own mother more.

Yes! And the bit where the children nose dived into the maid's uh... cleavage, had the whole cinema roaring with laughter at my theatre.
