"Intimate Psychotherapy" *wink wink nudge nudge*

Trope Meme:

Comment with a trope and I’ll give you my opinions on it. You can ask questions (as vague or specific as you like!), talk about examples, etc, etc. Then I’ll ask you about a trope.

And while we're on the subject of tropes, can I just say.... okay, look, I know that 'healing cock' gets a lot of dissing, and I understand why, BUT to be honest, I felt the sex is often pretty pivotal to my enjoyment of hurt/comfort (which I love). Like, after the hurt, I really do want to see boning, or some sexually laden act 90% of the time.

For example, I was reading this pretty decent Clint/Darcy fic in which Darcy had past emotional trauma and I was getting super into it, and there was this total slow burn thing going on, and Darcy was trusting Clint more and more, and Clint was being super-patient and expressing his lust and affection in ways make Darcy feel safe and then.... they hold hands. The end. And I was like, 'BUT WHAT ABOUT THE BONING?'

I've recced The Goat's Back before (Steve Rogers, gen, hurt/comfort) and while that fic is amazing, there was a voice in my head that shrieked, at several points, Natasha Romanoff, get on that. (That being Steve.)

1. Gender Bender

Usually pretty lame, most often ends up saying sucky things about girls.

2. Bodyguard Crush.

I'm a fan. Or at least, I'm a HUGE fan of the battle due/queen x knight dynamic version of this trope. Especially when it's disgraced body guard in service to a badass lady. Have you read Sabriel? Like that.

3. Body and Host.

Thumbs down.

4. Disability super Power

When it's done like Toph, it's awesome.

5. Belligerent Sexual Tension

Thumbs up.

6. Unresolved Sexual Tension.

I like air slightly less than I like this trope.

Got any examples? The only canon!gender bent thing I've watched has been the gender bent Adventure Time episodes.

No I have not, but I'll be sure to if it includes badass ladies and disgraced body guards.

I also enjoy the Bodyguard trope in Samurai Champloo. I think it's one of the key reasons I ship the female lead with both leading protagonists.

When it's done like Toph, it's awesome.

*nods* I wish there were more characters who embodied that trope well. The only examples I can think of are Toph, Teo (although I wonder if he does count because his abilities manifest less from his disability and more his intellect) and Sara from Samurai Champloo, although things don't end well for Sara.

Ranma 1/2, which was all about how much less awesome Ranma was in his girl form, Naruto, in which sex-switching was just for fanservice.

It's an EXCELLENT read.

Eww! Certainly glad I've never watched Ranma 1/2 then. The thing that made me happy about the Adventure Time's gender bent episode was that they didn't really change Finn's personality or abilities. They also didn't make a huge deal of it when Fionna rescued Prince Gumball, which was pretty rad.

I'd have a loved a Naruto episode where Naruto had to sex-switch in order to complete a mission. I mean, sex-switching could have had a hundred and one uses, but I suppose it's typical Kishimoto could only think of the fan-service.

1. Defrosting The Ice Queen

This trope gets a thumbs up because many of my favourite characters fit this trope. Cornelia, Marceline The Vampire Queen, Emma Frost Twilight Sparkle, Panthro, Zuko, Toph, Mai, Raven, etc. Also, who doesn’t love an emotionally damaged character that learns to trust people again?

The only scenario I think I would hate this in would be if it were made clear heroine A didn’t like hero B in a romantic sense and then did a sudden u-turn because: ‘no actually means I must have you right now!’ Get real. If you wanna make me think you’re good enough for the Ice Queen, you gotta make me believe it.

2. Fire-forged Friends

This trope gets a thumbs up because it usually results in a good fight scene and character/relationship growth. Harry Potter is a particularly good example of this.

3. The Woman Wearing the Queenly Masks

It depends on how this trope is handled. Sometimes it can be done really well and sometimes it’s handled poorly depending on how the girl is treated within the story. I think I tend to like these more when the author tries to understand WHY the character is cold and distant and allows them to be flawed (if they've had a fucked up family background) instead of providing a quick fix.

4. Fragile Speedster

A lot of my favourite characters are these so it gets a thumbs up.

5. Glacial Waif

I’m sad that Crona and Toph are the only examples of this trope in my fandom because there’s nothing I love more than seeing a seemingly defenceless person kick so much ass, particularly if it hurts someone's ego.

6. Overspecialization

This one gets a thumbs up depending on how it’s used.

On the one hand, this trope makes for realistic writing because there are a lot of people out there who only ever become specialised in one field due to time constraints, lack of resources or lack of ability.

On the one hand, TV Tropes makes the good point that Overspecialisation can look like lazy writing if the character has the time and access to learn other kinds of skills.

Also, who doesn’t love an emotionally damaged character that learns to trust people again?

That is PRECISELY why I like this trope so much. Because I am a sucker for emotional shut-down people (ESPECIALLY LADIES) who end up connecting with people.

Sometimes it can be done really well and sometimes it’s handled poorly depending on how the girl is treated within the story.

For an example where it's done very, very well, you should read Queen of Attolia.

That has been on my to read list for a long time now. I blame Irrel's gorgeous fanart. I believe she made a drawing of the series title character?

This picture in particular is badass:

She's done other drawings too if you want to check them out in her gallery. I believe the folder for that fandom is at the bottom of the gallery's sidebar.

By Cornelia, do you mean the one from W.I.T.C.H.? Because she is my favorite and I love her.

[identity profile] phemyscira.livejournal.com 2013-02-12 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I do indeed! Lin was my favourite at first because she reminded me a lot of my old self, but Cornelia totally and completely won me over during the course of the series.
