I was trolling through the Star Trek: Into Darkness Kink Meme, and there is only ONE (!) straight Spock/Uhura prompt.

And fandom, adding 'please have Spock/Uhura break up amicably' and 'Spock/Kirk (Uhura)' does not make me side eye you ANY LESS.

I just wanted Spock and Uhura being a badass functional established couple (in space!) Was I the only one who noticed and flailed over the moment in the moviewhere Uhura rose up on her tip-toes and presented her mouth to be kissed? And Spock obliged? Am I the only one who wants to read fic about what it's like when they fight? I'm dipping my toe into AO3, but I'm scared.

I know Rawles wrote some great Uhura/Spock fic after the first movie, but I don't think she's written anything after this one. :-/

To be fair it's only been out for like 4 days.

Yeah, I'm probably going to end up rereading some of her stuff.

Good luck! *is afeared for you*

Thanks!

I don't do kink memes, but if you give me a good first sentence prompt for these two, I can try my best to write you a fic or a ficlet?

Oh, you're so sweet. Let me try and think of a good prompt.

I'm right with you on the Spock/Uhura! It is such a pleasure to finally encounter a movie that understands established relationships can be very, very interesting indeed. I love the way the movie showed them as a real couple that goes through things and fights and works things out in just a few short things. [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman is the place for the kind of fic you want, although I don't think anyone has posted STID movie fic yet. You can leave a prompt at the comment fic fest though!

Same here! I wanted more of that, and fandom is not giving them to me. I'll keep an eye on where no woman.

Ouch. I mean, I know Kirk/Spock is one of the oldest ships in Fandom As We Know It, but still.

Spock/Kirk (Uhura)
Things like this are...ah. On the one hand, I'm glad people care enough about the lady characters not to just push them out of fandom entirely or cliff them or whatever, but it's annoying to be filtering the "X lady character" tag and be like, slash, slash, WHY IS SHE IN SO MANY SLASH STORIES DOES HER LIFE REVOLVE AROUND MAKING BOYS KISS? Which is why being able to exclude tags and categories is always fun.

I always feel really bratty about stuff like this, too. Like, I am not trying to say, "gay ships go away only ladies matter" or whatever it sounds like I am saying, it's just some fandoms seem to have been completely taken over by slash pairings.

*nods* And for me, a lot of it is, I just don't get the appeal of threesomes/moresomes AT ALL. Like, I often find it very unbelievable. Especially with moresomes. I'm like, 'EVERY ONE of these characters would not be okay with having this same kind of relationship! They just wouldn't.'

And saying that you want a couple to break up amicably does not negate the fact that you're breaking up a het couple to slash the dude with another dude. Which, honestly, fine if that floats your boat, but that's not what I'm interested in.

The Star Trek kmeme delicious needs some different methods of tagging because the last time I searched "het" with "Uhura" I swear the first ten pages was all slash fic. o_o

Ewwwwwww! So unhelpful!

Dude I squeed and elbowed my friend so hard I probably bruised her during that kiss! Sad to hear the kmeme is not co-operating (there were a lot of parts of the movie where I went "oh god I can hear the slash fic being written already"). I'm keeping my eye on the spock_uhura comm (though nothing much has been posted lately) and assuming the S/U converts will roll up soon enough to offer some awesome fic. :]

It was such a great moment and it said so much about their relationship.

You raise a good point. Unfortunately, I have found too many excellent fics on kink memes where the author never reveals themselves and they are never posted anywhere else. Horrifically enough.

All I really want is friendship fic about Uhura and Kirk bonding over how Spock drives them nuts but lbr, I'm not gonna find that anywhere.

SAME HERE.

YES. I loved that they're a supportive and established relationship, but they have realistic problems to deal with like any couple. So when it's all Kirk/Spock slash and Uhura's just there to "enable" it somehow, not cool. I'm not against slash but it's frustrating when it feels like the women of a fandom don't matter because the fic is all about getting the boys together. (In Avengers I see the prevalence of Tony/Steve, totally ignoring Pepper...) I also wish people wouldn't ignore or quickly dismiss important established canon relationships, het or slash or femme, just to make their own pairing happen. If the char's in a ship, you either have to deal with that or make your AU hinge on more than "X and Y aren't together."

God, yes, on the Avengers stuff too. I don't mind people writing basically an AU where the pairing is different -- but I sort of choke on stories where Pepper dumps Tony in the first paragraph for being unable to give her a normal life, just to get her out of the way for Tony/Steve. (And this in stories set after IM3!) When 90% of the stories I find under the Tony/Pepper tag on AO3 are actually Tony/Steve or Tony/Loki, with Pepper getting lip service for just long enough to sweep her under the rug, it gets frustrating.

Ugh! Did they not see how massively supportive and commited to each other Pepper and Tony are at the end of the movies? Do they not realized that Pepper is 100% aware of who Tony is and has been for years?

No. It's little moments like that that make the ship awesome. I just wish that they were more heavily featured in this movie. I hope BC stays in his tank in the next movie so that some of the more minor characters get more of a chance to shine.
