I was just lamenting with [livejournal.com profile] backtothesea about the fact that I don’t have a television show that’s my fannish sweet spot.

Here is the way the television landscape lies:

Arrow: I watched four episodes, didn’t love it, may give it another try. One the one hand, the lead is really hot. On the other, they did an absolutely insulting job with Dinah Laurel Lance.

Elementary: this show is a gift. Such a gift, that the canon and people’s escatic tags on tumblr fulfill my entire fannish needs. …although I would never say no to more BDSM-y fanfics of Joan and Sherlock.

Game of Thrones: It’s hard for me to interact fannishly with this show the way I do others because I basically know what’s going to happen, so it’s hard for me to get super-invested. It takes a lot of the drama out. I’m hoping that next season, when we start to get to more narratives that diverge from the book and more storylines that I’m not spoiled for, I’ll get more invested. (It doesn’t help that I feel like only now, three seasons in, are we getting to the meat of the narrative.)

Nikita: I enjoy watching this, especially when I’m marathoning it, but I don’t have any unmet fannish needs. The perils of shipping canon and being a season and a half behind.

Once Upon A Time: still haven’t watched the last episode. Needless to say, I’m unlikely to be watching season three.

Teen Wolf: I love this show but LJ fandom is pretty non-existent, so my fannish experience is basically reblogging all the transformative fierce lady graphics.

Prospective TV for the 2013/14 season:

SHIELD
Sleepy Hollow
more Nikita?

elementary is such an awesome show!

Arrow gets better as the season progresses

I too am sort of in the fannish wasteland right now. I also think I threw so much energy into Being Human and The LBD that I'm just burnt out right now, but there's not a lot on tv that's hitting my fannish sweet spot. Arrow gets to middling; it never got great but I enjoy the trio of Oliver + Diggle + Felicity and Felicity's crush on Oliver is delightful canon, so there's that. Elementary just doesn't seem to be made for smut though I think Sleepy Hollow is going to fill that niche nicely. I'm banking a lot on that show, which I think is the only new show I'm picking up.

Are you watching Orphan Black? I haven't had time to start yet, but from what I gather it's kind of a niche we'd both like.

I know the feeling, I feel like all shows orbit around my sweet spot but never quite gets there. I miss being consumed by ONE show, one show to rule them all etc. The only one to get really close to that is Orphan Black so seconding that suggestion - I'm thisclose to being obsessed with it, it's really amazing and for all the amazing things being said about Tatiana Maslany it is still NOT ENOUGH, she's seriously that good.

I mean, Arrow starts slow. There's no good way of getting around that. And Dinah never really gets any better. (RECAST PLEASE.) But the rest of the cast is a delightful chemistry experiment, so I sort of just recommend gritting your teeth through the first six or so episodes. It sort of kicks into gear after that.

To be honest, I am so annoyed with the writing for Laurel that I feel like I can't even have an opinion about the address. They gave her TERRIBLE stuff to work with. (So far, her best moments have been just her and her dad, imho.)
Sunday, June 30th, 2013 05:32 pm (UTC)
Her stuff with her dad remains her best material throughout the first season, imo. But I don't think that's a BAD thing necessarily, because I'd argue that good familial relationships are more important to character building than romantic stuff. But really. Katie Cassidy is terrible. The rest of the cast sparks off each other left, right and center, but her DAD has more chemistry with Stephen Amell than she does. It's a problem.

My big problem with Laurel is that I came into the show already loving Black Canary, who is a badass superhero in her own right. So to see this drippy "lawyer" who wasn't even permitted by the narrative to stay angry at Oliver...? No.

I have to admit to two things regarding Arrow (which I am now eagerly awaiting the second season of):

first, not being familiar with DC, I went into it with no concept of who Laurel is or would potentially become, other than what the show gave me to work with. (I was also very very confused about references to her in re: the Black Canary because my only experience with *that* character was Birds of Prey - see again, not a DC girl growing up, so clueless.) Nothing about the show thus far has made me like or care about Laurel, unfortunately, although I'm always open to them doing something to change that opinion (and I totally agree recasting would only help).

second, the only reason I made it through the first half of season one was because I stayed in the room while my husband was watching the show, for the very shallow reason of appreciating Oliver's arms and abs (and hell, Diggle's too for that matter).

Then I fell head-over-heels in love with Felicity Smoak and have never looked back. I <3 her to pieces, I 'ship her and Oliver to death, and she's quickly rocketed to the top of my "Awesome women are awesome" list.

I'm sorta of in the same state; I've lost most of my fannish love for TVD fandom, so it's difficult to find another pocket of fandom for myself. Elementary is a gift but I'm not super into it fannishly and mostly just enjoy the odd fic here and then. Teen Wolf I ADORE but I dislike tumblr fandom and I don't even know where to find Teen Wolf fandom on LJ /o\

I've lost most of my fannish love for TVD fandom,

Yeah, I kind of quit TVD in a disgust about a year ago.

I don't think there really is one? I feel like all the cool people who are into Teen Wolf are on tumblr.

I'm planning to watch Sleepy Hollow too. Tiny badass cop with skinny Ichabod Crane from 250 years ago! John Cho!

If I could make a trimmed "just Regina" end of season two video for you I totally would. There are some good moments in the last episodes. But a lot of annoying/dumb ones too. ::sigh:: I feel like I should have expected this from the creators of Lost but I'm still disappointed. I'll still be watching season three because I'm a masochist apparently.

I don't even look for much Elementary fandom, I'm so satisfied with what we have. I miss it though, so this might change.

Once Upon a Time makes me sad, thinking of the hopes I had last summer. It really depends on how I am when it airs, but I probably won't watch season three either.

I intend to watch Elementary, My Little Pony, Bob's Burgers if I catch up with season three in time, and to keep on with Pretty Little Liars. Will try Meghan Ory's and Sarah Michelle Gellar's new shows.

...That's actually a lot of tv for me.

Yeah, I had really high hopes for Once's second season... that were then dashed.

I've heard only good things about Pretty Little Liars.
Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013 04:59 am (UTC)
I recommended it halfway through the season, I think? Now I want to go back to those comments with a digital red pen of warning.

Pretty Little Liars! There for the female characters. It's not a perfect show, and it's got too much drama/suspense for my personal tastes (near-constant tension), but I love those friendships and the other kinds of relationships all the female characters have. Three full seasons without men taking over the narrative.

Yeah, working on LOST isn’t the most reassuring factor in regards to coherent long-term storytelling.

I always (metaphorically) bite my tongue when people talk about continuing to watch shows that they aren’t enjoying as much. I’m notorious to one of my friends for quitting shows in the second season (aka when they start to suck) but I’ve dragged myself through enough things I didn’t enjoy, hate-watching all the way.

That said… I highly, highly doubt season three is going to be better.

Let me be real: if the show wasn’t religious about having AT LEAST one shirtless Oliver scene per episode, I would likely not be watching it. I came across a series of promo shots and I was like, ‘awwwww yeah, you know what’s working for the audience.’

On that subject, I totally agree about Felicity. She brings this vibrancy to every scene she’s in that FANTASTIC and much needed and her and Oliver are adorable. I’ve been reading some Felicity/Oliver over the past week and that is DEFINTELY a ship I’m in favor of.

Have you read any of the stuff Frea O's been writing that's Felicity & Natasha?
Friday, July 5th, 2013 06:05 pm (UTC)
Orphan Black is one of those shows that just circles the sweet spot for me. I’ve watched two episodes and it hasn’t hooked me in. (Yet.) That said, Tatianna Maslany is a goddess of acting.
Friday, July 5th, 2013 06:05 pm (UTC)
I’ve watched the first two episodes.
Saturday, July 6th, 2013 08:17 am (UTC)
I am just waiting for someone to put together a super-cut of all Oliver's workouts.

Have you read any of the stuff Frea O's been writing that's Felicity & Natasha?

YES. They were delightful. (There are just the two, right?)

Teen Wolf: I love this show but LJ fandom is pretty non-existent, so my fannish experience is basically reblogging all the transformative fierce lady graphics.

I just got caught up with this show. I remember thinking it was dumb when the show started and I watched the pilot, and I still haven't entirely given up that assessment (omg the fight scenes are just...WHY UNIVERSE, WHY) but I love the character growth and the awesome ladies. I actually started ficcing it this season which meant finally opening an AO3 account. (http://archiveofourown.org/users/rashaka/pseuds/rashaka)

If you ever want to talk about it, I'm there.

...I can't wait for SHIELD and Sleepy Hollow omg.

Congrats on the A03 account! Personally, I'm really, really pleased with that interface.

, and I still haven't entirely given up that assessment (omg the fight scenes are just...WHY UNIVERSE, WHY

I know, right?

And while I really liked the most recent episodes, and USUALLY like non-linear episodes, I hated the non-linear stuff in the last episode; it was so clear that they didn't have an action climax if they told the story sequentially (although I would argue that Allison's scene with her mother would have been an exquisite climax) so they chopped it all up.

If you ever want to talk about it, I'm there.

I might start posting episode reviews again, then!

I also am enjoying the interface for AO3, especially the instant-edit functions. Though I miss the large traffic that you get at the Pit.

Yes. Although I've been loving season 3 in general, this was one of the poorest episodes of the series. The action sequences were too slow and lacked any dramatic content. Even the set-up of the battle was painfully simplistic. I also thought the editing of the non-linear stuff was sloppy. It's too bad, in a way, because everything that happened in the bus and everything that happened in the rest stop was good, fun writing. Allison's surgery scene was phenomenal (her mother scares me) and Scott's subplot was good, as was the fist-fight with Isaac. I just wish the other half of the episode hadn't been so terrible.

Agreed.

I'd watch it. :D

And I think she's written about 4 or 5 now?

Yeah, I am also faced with high hopes for Sleepy Hollow to be a fannish hot spot. I'm really hoping the show is decent and then we get fic based on things like this (http://redbrunja.tumblr.com/post/58037425454/bananaleaves-you-want-my-help-which-suggests).
