[livejournal.com profile] errant_shadows asked me:

How about a list of your current fandoms?

New shows you intend to watch, old shows you're still watching, books, comics, movies, etc.?

It may prompt some interesting discussions from people who weren't aware of your shared interest.

This was a really great question, because I was thinking of doing a fannish check-in anyway. Basically, here’s the lay of the fannish land:

Arrow: still haven’t finished season one. This show is hovering right at that ‘I like this but I don’t love it’ place, frustratingly.

The Avengers: still interested in all my go-to pairings, sad that this fandom is in a lull at the moment (just waiting, I am sure, for new canon in the form of Thor 2 and CA: WINTER SOLDIER NATASHA ROMANOFF RETURN TO ME!)

Elementary: still haven’t watched any of season two. Probably because the back of my mind is going, ‘they’re never going to top Irene Adler is Moriarty, leave now.’

SHIELD: blah. I do not like Skye, I don't find the scientists amusing, etc, etc. I'm dropping this one.

Sleepy Hollow. Dropping this too. I want to love it, but each episode feels like forty minutes of chasing a macguffin, plus I'm shipping it wrong. I am WAY more interested in Ichabod's past slap-slap-kiss romance with Katrina or with him hooking up with Abby's sister than with Abby herself.

Parks & Rec: SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS!

I don’t have anything to say bookwise. Nothing worth talking about since Rose Under Fire and World War Z. I did really enjoy an anothology called Apple For The Creature, and it reminded me that I need to track down more Marjorie Lui novels.

Movies:

If my tv schedule ends up being as slim as it looks like it will be, I may have time to work on the massive backlog of movies I’d like to see. As for upcoming attractions, I am SO DOWN for Catching Fire, the Thor 2 stinger (seriously, I’m more excited for that than I am for Thor, for serious), and The Book Thief.

Comics:

Wherefore art thou, Hawkeye?

I am technically caught up with Captain Marvel, only I understand nothing. [livejournal.com profile] qualapec was the 'everyone dies alone but only the selfish live that way' the conversation the one you were talking about earlier in the context of the Carol + Jess relationship?

I also have some Black Widow-centric comics to read.

On the DC side of things (look at your life, look at your choices) I have the spoils from the Stephanie Brown masterpost, Cassandra Cain’s batgirl run (because Steph), selected Jason Todd comics (thanks, latenightcuppa!), and the beginning of Damian Wayne’s run.

I was scrolling through my LJ recently in an attempt to get a feeling for what the fannish landscape of 2013 has been thus far, and one thing I noticed is that I have done the (admittedly, super-awesome) Tennis Match Meme about a BILLION times in the last six months.

So my personal challenge for the next four weeks is to post (and play) with some of the many, many, many other memes that exist on the internet.

Starting with....

...and gacked from [livejournal.com profile] musesfool:

1. Comment on this post with the revolution will be televised.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ/DW.

[livejournal.com profile] qualapec gave me the letter 'J' which was super mean of her.

Jones, Indiana. He’s just the epitome of cool, okay? Go watch Raiders of The Lost Ark if you don’t believe me.

John Diggle. I don’t have much to say about Diggle.. Narratively, I like that he found out Oliver’s secret pretty quickly, because Oliver needs as many people as he can get telling him when he’s being an hot-headed lunatic (always). I found his relationship with Carly really adobs until their actual first date, which made me think that Carly was ready to move on but Diggle wasn’t. I like that Diggle’s reaction to Felicity joining the team was ‘self-defense training time, yay!’.

Those are all my thoughts.

John Conner exists so that we can focus on his mother and his killer robot girlfriend and their quest to save the world from Skynet.

Jaye Tyler. HEROINE OF MY GENERATION.

I loved Wonderfalls when it was first airing, but I didn’t love Jaye the way I do now. Because when Wonderfalls was first airing, I was an optimistic 15 years old. Now, I’m ALMOST 26 MY GOD SO OLD, having earned a BA and embarked into a workforce filled with twenty/thirty somethings who are all over educated and unemployable. Basically, I just get Jaye so much more now and she seems like such a prescient character. (Saint Jaye is right.)

It’s hard for me to verbalize all my Jaye Tyler feelings. Maybe when my rewatch is finished I’ll have more to say.

(FYI, J is a really hard letter to do this meme on, and I spent about a billion years thinking of all the fannish Jacks and Johns and Jeremys that I didn’t want to waste words on.)

James “Bucky” Buchanan Barnes. I am really looking forward to watching Natasha and Steve rescue this dude like the BAMFs they are, come 4.14.14.

The winter soldier is a ghost.

(ETA: right when I was ready to post I remembered Joan Watson, who is 100% flaw-free.)

I was just lamenting with [livejournal.com profile] backtothesea about the fact that I don’t have a television show that’s my fannish sweet spot.

Here is the way the television landscape lies:

Arrow: I watched four episodes, didn’t love it, may give it another try. One the one hand, the lead is really hot. On the other, they did an absolutely insulting job with Dinah Laurel Lance.

Elementary: this show is a gift. Such a gift, that the canon and people’s escatic tags on tumblr fulfill my entire fannish needs. …although I would never say no to more BDSM-y fanfics of Joan and Sherlock.

Game of Thrones: It’s hard for me to interact fannishly with this show the way I do others because I basically know what’s going to happen, so it’s hard for me to get super-invested. It takes a lot of the drama out. I’m hoping that next season, when we start to get to more narratives that diverge from the book and more storylines that I’m not spoiled for, I’ll get more invested. (It doesn’t help that I feel like only now, three seasons in, are we getting to the meat of the narrative.)

Nikita: I enjoy watching this, especially when I’m marathoning it, but I don’t have any unmet fannish needs. The perils of shipping canon and being a season and a half behind.

Once Upon A Time: still haven’t watched the last episode. Needless to say, I’m unlikely to be watching season three.

Teen Wolf: I love this show but LJ fandom is pretty non-existent, so my fannish experience is basically reblogging all the transformative fierce lady graphics.

Prospective TV for the 2013/14 season:

SHIELD
Sleepy Hollow
more Nikita?

I was thinking about Elementary a couple days ago, as one does, and I was thinking that I would really like to see Sherlock honestly relapse at some point. I think that could/would be a wonderful metaphoric Reichenbach Falls moment, I’d love to see Irene return and be part of that, and I think it would be an excellent way to have Sherlock “die” but be able to recover, without having him fake his own death.

Also, Irene/Sherlock is the second example of a bad girl/good boy ship that I legit ship! I was so excited when I realized that.

A year ago I listed my top ten favorite male and female characters, in order.

It was brutal.

And even at the time, I knew that there was no way that list was going to stay static.

So may I present, Redbrunja’s Top 10 Male and Female characters, 2013.

(To save time, I’m only providing commentary for characters who are either new to the list, or have moved up or down it in noteworthy ways.)

I wanted to mention how much I adored the detailof Irene having red paint on her foot. For a half of an instant, I thought it might be blood, and even knowing it's paint, it's a wonderful way to reference the violence surrounding Irene's disappearance.

Because of REASONS, I need Sherlock to leave the brownstone to go do something, state his going to be gone for 2+ hours and then come back after about forty minutes. Any suggestions?

So many of the media that, just recently, I was loving to bits are now on my shit-list. Pretty much Elementary is the only thing that I don't want to give a good slap to. I mean, I am sort-of excited about tomorrow's episode of Once but I also kind of feel like this:

 photo youngtumblr_mamqzyvqrQ1rqml7ao1_500_zps1f14bd90.gif

Because I suspect that Henry is going to now love Neal and diss Emma because that little brat has not realized that a.) the world is not in black and white and b.) sometimes lies are better than the truth.

BUT ANYWAY, I came across this deliciously kinky Elementary fanart tonight, and wanted to share.

I am always pretty awful about going to bed like a reasonable person but it's been much worse lately partially due to the fact that I've been having terrible, terrible dreams pretty much every night. Or when I take a late afternoon nap. Also, I gave myself the worst manicure yesterday and had to spend, like, twenty minutes trying to get two coats of red off my nails after my manicure got chipped all to hell in less than twenty-four hours. So even though I soaked my fingers in nail polish remover, my cuticles are all hideously hang-nailed and dyed red, so it's questionable as to if there was any improvement at all. Basically, my hands look like I murdered someone and didn't do a good job covering my tracks.

Now, on to what you are interested in – TV!

[+] I always forget how much I enjoy Elementary until I'm watching Elementary. I was about three episodes behind, so I was able to charge through those, and I just really love that this Sherlock is affected by what people think of him. I love that while Gregson took Holmes back as a consultant, he didn't like it and he made it clear that Holmes had lost his trust. In "the Deductionist" I was thrilled to see that Holmes himself fears for his future and believes he might self-annihlate. His bitterness that the profile was able to predict his struggles with addiction when he didn't was aces.

I keep saying the same things each time I talk about Elementary but in my defense, a genius detective with feelings and flaws who is actually held accountable for his action is still novel.

[+] Young Justice has become the show that I watch while I tumblr. I mean, it's close enough to the end that I'm going to finish watching the show's run, but I am so done with it. I really loved the episode where Artemis and M'gann heal Kaulder, and Conner epically reads Dick the riot act about not sharing information, but the most recent episodes were epically boring. Seriously, how do the writers think we're going to care about these lame assholes? The only thing of 'interest' was how fucking much I hate Mal/Karen. Mal finally got it through his thick skull that Karen was more interested in doing hero shit than dating but no.... Karen just had to be 'oh, no, I really love you' which I call TOTAL BULLSHIT on. Regardless of what the writers imagine happen during the timeskip, the ENTIRE TIME, we've actually seen these characters interacting, Karen has been Just Not That Into Him and he's been unwilling to get it. Why can't a girl prioritize her school and her career over her FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL BOYFRIEND?

[+] Green Lantern had a solid, enjoyable episode this Saturday. Razer, once again, has the best lines: "By the way, if we do explode, you two are acceptable souls to be vaporized with." Awww, that's adorable.

I really loved Hal and company having to deal with the rings being out of power and the issues with language, even before the rings completely died (like rhyme not translating).

Best moment, though, was Razer's epic bitch-please face when Kilowog tossed him the manhunter head. I love how Hal and Kilowog seem to be forgetting that he's not actually a green lantern. (ONE DAY, BB. Or maybe not.)

When Razer strolled back in commenting that his lantern repairing itself was convenient,  I was like, 'damn right it's convenient
 - that boy has a clockwork girlfriend to save, he doesn't have time to steal a new lantern' and by 'save,' I mean 'humbly petition for forgiveness.'

(Also, what everyone had in their pockets was hilarious. Especially Razer having more weapons than he had fingers.)

So, apparently next episode is called

"love is a battlefield" which I first thought was going to be about Aya and Razer but realized is much more likely to be about Hal and Carol.

[+] Once Upon A Time has been kind of slow, lately, and the way they handle Henry's status as an adopted kid continues to be the worst (breaking news, right?) but I keep sticking around for things like: evil!Charming's harlot of the week being Jack the Giant Killer and real!Charming and Snow running around in Storybrooke with gun and a bow and arrow. Seriously, Snow with her black tights and short skirt and archery was the most sexy!adorable thing ever.

I really do not care about anything related to Mr. Gold. Because I am a terrible person, I laughed when he tried to restore Belle memory by kissing her and then I go really upset about who let him into the hospital room of a injured woman.
