And the scenerio! That could totally happen. Suki would likely have been spending a good portion of her time going through katas in her cell, and thus would get Iroh's attention when she heard the breakout. She's cute and can fend for herself; definitely Iroh's type.
You know Suki isn't slacking off in prison, and she is SO Iroh's type - smart, hot, badass, with a sense of humor. There is a reason Suki/Iroh and Iroh/Toph have something so wrong, yet so tantalizingly possible about them.
*nodnod* I like Suki/Iroh better than Toph/Iroh; Suki's old enough to be engaged, so it's somewhat less creepy than with a twelve-year-old. Toph's view of Iroh is closer to 'Awesome grandpa I never had/therapist'.
But Iroh/Toph had a CONVERSATION! That pairing is MORE CANON!!!1111!!!!!
kidding.
And yeah, I agree. I think I'd prefer to read Suki/Iroh, at least if we're not talking about doing a timeskip. But ten years down the line, when Toph has, you know, done more than skirt the edges of puberty....
Pft. I've been shipping Petunia/Snape since before there was canonical evidence that either knew the other existed. Canon means zilch.
Yeah . . . and then there's the paranoia that Iroh's role as Awesome Mentor Figure will doom him to death at some point during the series, so best to go with one that works now.
This is almost my take - mine's more 'author intention means zilch, and canon is there to be merrily screwed with.'
You know, I don't think Iroh will die, if only because it seems so done and expect, and Avatar usually avoids that. On the other hand, I didn't expect Dumbledore to bit it, either.
I mean that as far as pairings that only have stuff like a conversation as basis go. Canon should still be acknowledged; even with stuff like 'Time after Time' where I wrote it because my initial response to canon was 'Set Willingham on fire', I managed to make it pure Snow/Bigby without actually going against a word of canon. Canon should be respected most of the time, danced around when you need to, and hit in the face with a cream pie when it would be funny.

*nods* I have been screwed over too many times by creators to believe that they have some moral authority over the story, and I firmly believe in my right to play with characters and relationships.
If I want pure canon I'll read/watch the book/show. If I want 'what-if's' I'll go to fanfic.
Yeah, though some get snobby or what have you over how their pairing is pure and good and JKR did it wrong or what have you, so I wind up saying that, while canon is 'right', I like my version better. Some regard for the original should be shown. Katara and Zuko get together? Sure, but at least acknowledge that Aang has strong feelings for her. Snow and Bigby run off together and ignore all that shit that Willingham pulled? Sure, but remember the stuff that would happen in Fabletown even without them around.
Look, canon is canon, but as long as you respect it enough not to write your characters out of character? It's fanfic. That means it's a free playing feel.
(And those canon/not canon debates get me. It should be like porn - I know canon when I see it, doesn't mean I have to treat it like it's holy.)

Plus, acknowledging that Aang has strong feelings leads to angst, and who could pass that up?
Exactly! It's just crazy. Remembering the bits that occur in canon when going in your own direction results in more interesting plots! Angst, stuff blowing up, etc.
Though in working out a GG AU wherein Gil decided he may as well explain why he hit Othar with a wrench so Agatha didn't think he was horrible, I realized it would completely change everything that came after it and stop the hive engine from being activated.

By the way, episode 3.14 was pushed back to this next friday, and it's titled "The Boiling Rock."
That's gonna be fun.
