I recently watched the Batman: The Animated Series introductory episodes for Catwoman and some Catwoman comics (Anodyne 1-3) AND THEN the Catwoman scenes of The Dark Rises and it was a one-two-three punch of childhood nostalgia and fierce lady feelings and CATWOMAN, HOW AWESOME IS SHE?

Okay, the Catwoman issue I read was, QUITE LITERALLY, an entire issue about a morally ambiguous lady thinking about how to be a hero and be herself and realizing/owning the fact that the world is a murky place where good people do bad things. BE STILL MY HEART.

Also, I believe it was [livejournal.com profile] mistaria who was talking about how much more palatable Batman is when he’s interacting with Catwoman, and it’s so damn true. That moment when Batman tells Selina she’s a good person at heart is a great Actual Hero Moment.

On that subject, the Animated Series:

I remember the first episode of this two parter really, really well from when I saw it as a child (a.k.a, all the stuff with Catwoman cutting glass with her claws and running across rooftops and flirting with Batman and showing up at charity galas looking fierce as fuck) but the ending of the two parter took me completely by surprise (although it retrospect, it shouldn’t have). Batman, how can you be Dating Catwoman when you’ve arrested her?

Catwoman: There’s something between us.
Batman: Yes. The law.
redbrunja: ..and your erection.

And Bruce saving the cat! Again, I’m having ‘you’re an actual hero!’ feelings. Like, I did not get ‘Batman would totally save me if I was in trouble!’ feelings pretty much ever in any of the Nolan movies or in any of the comics I’ve read recently, so it’s really different to watch the animated series and be like, ‘oh, okay, I would feel safer if this guy was looming over my crime-ridden city. (And I don’t think that’s a function of the different ages the animated series versus the movies are aimed at, I think it’s due to a difference in core aesthetic.)

(I should make a list: If I was in trouble in Gotham, who of the nominal white hats would I want to save me? Bruce would be last on that list. Probably it would go Catwoman, Stephanie, Jason. Jason’s ranking depends on whether or not I’d get to make out with him afterward.)

I said this after I first watched The Dark Knight Rises but I’ll say it again: goddamn, is Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman perfect. The way that Selina puts on and then takes off personalities, how damn good she is at playing people, HER SENSE OF HUMOR, her sheer physicality; god, that first scene is perfection, where she is 100% believable as a maid and then just sets aside that personality, kicks Bruce’s cane away in her fucking epic heels and then jumps out the window in her line-up-the-back stockings and her fucking heels of epicness.

(Also, it’s brief, but Selina is clearly a lady who helps other ladies, and also kid!thieves) out.)

Seriously, I could cry.

I’ve not even going to touch the idocity of trying to do Robin without actually committing to doing Robin in The Dark Knight Rises, but I just want to mention that I really like Joseph Gordan Levitt and seeing him with the GC tabs on his epaulets gave me all kinds of Gotham Central feelings (which is a comic I need to finish). Also, Nolan really needs to thank the music composer because the ending scenes of The Dark Knight Rises are actually… well, the music is doing A LOT of heavy lifting. The stuff with John Blake-legal-name-Robin is REALLY awkwardly written (as much as I love both actors in that scene) and as THRILLED as I am with the concept of Catwoman and Batman together…. ummm, I have a hard time buying Batman just chillaxing on a beach somewhere (although Nolan’s Batman apparently just cooled his heels for a couple years there, so what do I know) and if you think Selina Kyle isn’t an adrenaline junkie you’re wrong.

If you're having Selina feels, you really should read Ed Brubaker's run of Catwoman. It's basically everything I love about Selina put down on paper and SO MUCH BETTER than the clusterfuck that was the new 52 reboot. It's all about Selina trying to be good, but still being a darker grey and she has a fabulous supporting cast (HOLLY. HOLLY I MISS YOUUUUU) and Darwyn Cooke does the art for the first run and it's just so fucking stylish.

That's actually what I'm reading right now and loving! Brubaker is doing a fantastic job with Selina and I agree about the art - it looks wonderfully art deco but is still really nuanced and readable.

CATWOMAN, HOW AWESOME IS SHE?
YES!

I really like Catwoman in The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. She does some backwards flipping off buildings and sasses Batman and is generally fabulous.

I think being rescued by Nightwing would be my pick.

I think the part that really gets me about Catwoman in that movie is when she flips back and forth between shooting bad guys and screaming like a scared little girl. Like, it's fantastic and legitimately scary how well she can manipulate people's perceptions of her and use that to her advantage.

Yeah I have this problem too. Especially after I read Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader, in which Batman has this little monologue about how it's inevitable that he would die as Batman because what else would he do, retire and play golf?

Also this is unrelated and I'm not sure if you will like this or not but I know you are on the lookout for Steph/Jason and I found this (http://protagonistically.tumblr.com/post/9497428612/ficlet-anna-howard-shaw-day) by accident today when I was looking for something else.

Woo! Go Catwoman!

Yes! I love how she checks that no one is watching her and then strides out, cold as ice.

Exactly. Plus he also created a legacy that is both a.) vital to gotham and b.) almost impossible for anyone else to fill.

XD You are watching the animated series, still one of my favorite shows of my heart. It was a rare quality and yes the shippiness between Cat and Bat is still epic and one of my favorite versions.

I do like the 90's comic Catwoman the best, but yeah..it had a lot of heart in the animated show.

Batman: TAS is just so good. Like, I can't look away, it's so visually perfect.

The Animated Series is definitely what gave me my original Selina love. I love all her eps and Kevin Conroy, who voices Batman, is still my favourite Batman today. He does a great, subtle job of switching between Bats/Bruce.

And yes I totally said that! I like reading him interacting with Cass and Babs a lot too (he just makes me want to punch him when he interacts with Steph) but he's always the best with Selina. She won't put up with his bullshit and they both get and respect each other. The dynamic is especially good in the run you're reading because they're both older and are on equal footing because they know each others secrets. ::purrs::

I was so scared Nolan was going to screw up Selina (given the awful and unbearable character of Rachel in the previous movies) and I walked out of the theater grinning from ear to ear. When Anne accepted her Oscar for Les Mis I pretended she was accepting for Selina (musicals aren't my thing though she is a fantastic singer too). Her Selina was more than I could have hoped for. The fact that she's morally ambiguous but has a conscience and the way she dons roles and uses the perception of others to her advantage is Selina at her best. And the moment she decided to go back to help Bats and had a "damn it" moment about it. I literally said "that's my girl" out loud the first time I saw it. The ending actually worked for me. On Bruce's end it was pretty shocking but given the fact that he gave up his mission for eight years it at least fits this version a little better. Selina I buy. She wanted a fresh start and I don't see her living a boring life after that. It was honestly refreshing to see them get a happy ending. That never happens in the comics for obvious reasons. It was also nice to see Talia as a straight up villain for once. I don't understand how anyone can love Bruce/Talia. She doesn't get him at all and wants him to be something he's not and err... I guess he likes her 'cause she's hot? Do not get that pairing.

Oh and small shout out for how awesome Holly is. Even though Selina's friend character in the movie wasn't named Holly I still saw her as Holly. :D Their friendship in the comics is fantastic.

Also the parallels between Max from Dark Angel and Selina always amuse me since they're two of my fav fictional ladies of all time.

Argh I have so many awesome Selina icons I wish I could use them.

Same! Hearing how good Kevin Conroy is really made me understand why people disliked Bale's batman voice so much.

PREACH.

Ha! Yeah, I like some musicals but there was a scene in Les Mis when I was just like, 'Wolverine and Catwoman are singing together!' Not what the director wanted, I'm sure.

Selina I buy. She wanted a fresh start and I don't see her living a boring life after that. It was honestly refreshing to see them get a happy ending.

This is all true. I remember on rewatch, when she's pissed about Clean Slate not existing, I had that thought that 'oh, this makes her ending make more sense.'

I don't understand how anyone can love Bruce/Talia. She doesn't get him at all and wants him to be something he's not and err... I guess he likes her 'cause she's hot? Do not get that pairing.

It doesn't help that NO ONE has ever written a Talia that makes sense for a narrative pov. I mean, in the DKR you can sort of just go 'well, she's evil' but I wanted SO MUCH MORE with her and Bane and their relationship, and I thought her death scene was really weak.

Also the parallels between Max from Dark Angel and Selina always amuse me since they're two of my fav fictional ladies of all time.

Max is SO damn awesome, and I feel like she is a total narrative daughter of Selina.
