Okay, it’s time for something new and different. Something you would never expect from my livejournal.

We are going to spend some time focusing on dudes.

That’s right. For this meme, you are going to ask me questions about people with penii. (Or who identify as male.)

And we’re going to wait and see how often the only thing I have to say about them relates to the ladies in their narrative.

And then I’m going to ask you questions about guys.

On your mark, get set, penis.

This was prompted by a conversation I had with qualapec where I was mentioning that all my 5 things answers were basically ‘four ladies and the obligatory dude’. (Much like your average action flick.).

And that I do not use my awesome icons of guys enough.

And the fact that just typing up this meme made me smile insanely.

Top 5 fictional men you would shag? No I have not been thinking about this lately...
Monday, October 21st, 2013 07:03 am (UTC)
Well, since you've been thinking about it lately, I want to hear YOUR list of fictional men you'd shag. As for me - I picked fictional guys who, if they hypothetically slept with me, would not be cheating on the other half of the OTP they're in, AND would probably be really good at it:

Jason Todd, Steve Rogers, Herc Hansen, Choi Hakkai, and Chris Argent.

GET SET, PENIS.

gosh okay i laughed really hard at that

I was slightly laughing as I typed up this entire post.

in a misguided attempt at brotherly reconciliation, jason and dick move in together. what happens and how wrong does this go.

Aw, geeze, I don’t know that I know Jason OR Dick well enough to say how they’d react.

My instinctive reaction is to go, ‘that’ll never happen.’ What I COULD see happening is Jason getting really injured and/or ill, and staying with Babs (as in, Oracle lays down the law and is like, ‘you’re staying with me or you’re going to stay in the hospital) (where is Jason’s team? I dunno, roll with it). But –and I hesitate to ever cast aspersions on Babs’ competency – nursemaiding a guy as huge as Jason is something that is easier if you’re not wheelchair bound. And weigh two-thirds what he does.

So Dick ALSO, moves in, to help Babs and to help Jason and for some UNFATHOMABLE reason, Dick and Babs aren’t together at the moment, so besides bonding between Jason and Babs and Jason and Dick, Jason plays the adorable floppy haired moppet of family movies, and tries to finagle them together. And now I’m imagining a slightly feverish Jason explaining his plans to Steph (because it’s me, and I don’t not!fic without Steph).

Jason: You’re not gonna help?

Steph: What part of ‘that’s a terrible plan, Jason’ made you think I wasn’t going to help? I am TOTALLY game to “trap” two superheroes in an elevator together, because they’re TOTALLY not going to see through that INSTANTLY and will have NO IDEA who to blame.

Do you think Jason gets credit for how morally defendable his actions are?

[This is your question. I realize I should clarify, since I hemorrhaged Jason-feelings and Natasha-feelings and Faith-feelings all over the rest of the comment.]

I don’t mean in the comics, because, lol,* but within the fandom? I personally find Jason’s killings really ethically correct and that’s something I pretty much NEVER see talked about.**

*I honestly cannot articulate a reason why Stephanie didn’t shoot Black Mask that makes soul-deep sense to me. Like, I know what she says, and I know it's comics, but for Christ’s sake, once someone has bound and tortured you, fucking shoot that fucker so you can get out alive! Talk about justifiable homicide.

**Things I do on long commutes: argue the ethical justifications of killing fictional characters. If you know a person is going to kill/rape again, and the police cannot prevent him, you CHOOSE not to kill him, you bear some responsibility for the future deaths/rapes!

What is wrong with killing people who deserve it? I think, making dramatic gestures between shifting gears.

I’m really pleased that in DC we have Wonder Woman and Marvel has Natasha (and several others, if memory serves) who are willing to take a life if necessary. (And with Natasha, sometimes her not killing someone is framed as her being wise, sometimes it’s famed as killing would be unnecessary (http://redbrunja.tumblr.com/post/63952517845/veliseraptor-ladieslead-natasha), and sometimes it’s because killing is easy – making someone suffer is an art (http://redbrunja.tumblr.com/post/30158600260/somethingcomics-killing-people-is-easy-making)).

Girls are better at it, I guess (http://redbrunja.tumblr.com/post/57224542740).

does it still count as a penis question if i ask you which two genderswapped!ladies would have it totally different if they were dudes?
Monday, October 21st, 2013 07:11 am (UTC)
Yes, but it's a complicated question, because I feel like the answer is, if a character is living in a fairly gender-equal society, they're going to be pretty much the same (i.e., rule 63 just about every character on Teen Wolf and the characters would basically be the same) but Rule 63 a character from a very sexist world (i.e. any female character from Game of Thrones but ESPECIALLY Cersei, and their entire characterization and character arc changes hugely.)

So, short version, every lady in Game of Thrones.

Any male characters you'd really like to see as ladies?
Wednesday, October 16th, 2013 03:43 pm (UTC)
What's your take on the men in the LBD universe? Everyone has focused on how the adaptation changed the ladies' narratives but not so much about the men. Do you think it more/less faithful to the original wrt men?
Thursday, October 24th, 2013 08:47 am (UTC)
Okay, I’ve never actually read P&P, so I’m not fully qualified to answer this question. I will say that every male character did what the narrative needed – Mr. Collins was annoying but not impossible to work with (though utterly wrong for Lizzie), George was a charming user, Fitz was fun and trustworthy, and William Darcy was the best Dary, imho. (yes, I rate him higher than Firth, blasphemy, I know).

Why is fanfic with drunk!Darcy so. damn. appealing?

Brella asks for your opinions on Wally West's arc in season two, surprising no one.
Sunday, October 20th, 2013 08:12 am (UTC)
WHAT ARC?

Mr. Being-A-Superhero-Is-Awesome is suddenly "out of the life" in a way that seemed to hint that something prompted that choice, his girlfriend goes undercover, we don't see him for fifteen episodes, he comes back and fights crime with his gf, and then he dies. That's not an arc, that's a slap in the face.

Same question to you.

Favourite male in the Whedon-verse?

Or one you think has the best storyline, if you prefer.
Monday, October 21st, 2013 07:17 am (UTC)
My favorite male is Mal Reynolds, but I feel like Topher has a really dynamic arc, in the sense that I really disliked in him the beginning and really ended up feeling for him and being interested in what was happening with him.

Least-favorite Whedon-verse male.

....I can't think of five. Or even one, really. I'm not really a big 'villain' fan, honestly.

Top five male halves of canon relationships

(Trying to figure out how to word this, but guys you actually like because they're respectful to their ladies, have real chemistry with them, they're good together, etc.)

And why you like them.
Monday, October 21st, 2013 07:20 am (UTC)
I get what you're saying. Here is my list of dudes who continued to adore and respect the women they love, even after they got together with them:

Scott Mccall, Tyler Lockwood, the male half of the married couple on Happy Endings, Ben Wyatt, and Tony Stark.

Five male characters you'd be interested in dating, or who you think would be good boyfriend material.

Well, focusing on your icon, what are you thoughts on Michael (or Michael/Fiona)?
Thursday, October 24th, 2013 08:53 am (UTC)
I really enjoy Michael/Fiona when the writers remember the Michael is ridiculously into Fi (he broke up with a long-time girlfriend pretty much the minute he MET her, even before they started something) and that Fi isn’t just chasing after Michael. One of the things the writers really struggle with is remembering that Fi has (or should have) a life of her own outside of Michael.

What are some of your favorite action couples?

Are there any narrative tropes you like specifically for male characters?
Sunday, October 20th, 2013 08:09 am (UTC)
As a subset of the queen/knight dynamic, the disgraced warrior who pledges himself in service to a fierce lady (Sabriel is a pretty perfect example of this.) This is a trope I pretty much only see happen with dudes, and to be honest, I’m not really interested in Rule 63-ing it.

What are some tropes that usually happen with female characters but you’d like to see happen with male characters (you don’t have to LIKE the trope, fyi).

In first-person prose, what really draws you to a male narrator?
Sunday, October 20th, 2013 08:09 am (UTC)
A sense of humor is a big one. I want to be entertained by the inside of the person’s head, with guys – especially white guys –having a sense of humor and some perspective about their life (I think it really helps the narrative from diving into manpain territory.)

Do you have a preference for 1st or 3rd person in fiction? In fanfic?

Favorite canon gay/queer relationship between two male characters, from any canon.
Thursday, October 17th, 2013 06:22 am (UTC)
I have an answer! I have an answer!

Jules Cassiday and Robin Chadwick from the Troubleshooters series. I actually wound up writing fic for them one Yuletide, when I offered Troubleshooters and did not realize that I was saying I would write more than one guy character, and thus asking to be asked to write slash.

What are some narrative tropes that you love for BOTH male and female characters?

Tell me about Clint Barton. All versions. Any versions. Whatever you feel like metaing about him.
Thursday, October 17th, 2013 06:26 am (UTC)
I was actually just thinking about why I love Clint the other day, and while he is a male who is struggling to become a man (and I know some people who are really tried of the adult male character who's a perpetual adolescent, and I understand that) what really makes me love Clint is that he is AWARE that he is fucked up and spends most of this time trying to be a good superhero and sometimes trying to be a good man. I'm thinking of the great scene where he's trying to untangle his christmas lights or whatever, and he's saying that you have to try and make your own stuff work.

Give me your Jason Todd feelings. Specifically, what are some characteristics that you think would be good for a character romantically paired with Jason Todd to have.
Thursday, October 17th, 2013 03:03 pm (UTC)
Give me your Jareth or Zuko feelings, either/or, or both if you prefer.

(With the thought being that you actually HAVE seen the labyrinth, lol!)

I just started watching Haven and am having so many feels. I'm just starting season two and want to talk about Nathan and Duke, and how they are actually becoming friends.

And how this show is basically one big canon OT3 <3.
Sunday, November 3rd, 2013 07:14 am (UTC)
I never made it past the first season, I have to admit. But I was more about two sides of that triangle, i.e. I was interested in Audrey/Nathan and Audrey/Duke, but not as ot3.
