HEY FLIST, comment with a trope and i will give you:

  • 1 book recs

  • 1 song/artist recs OR

  • 1 movie rec

for absolutely any genre, subject, trope, etc (“something that reminds me of a road trip” “something about the 1800s” “something with a king/lionheart dynamic” etc etc etc) you want.

And then I suggest you post this in your LJ (although it is not required) so I can ask you for recommendations.

"Love Makes You Evil" - because, yeah, sometimes it does. (...making sure we are on the same page (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoveMakesYouEvil) ^^)

To be honest, the one example of this trope I can think of (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) which is basically ‘how to use this trope to COMPLETELY DESTROY PREVIOUSLY COHERENT AND INTERESTING CHARACTERIZATION.’

What trope/characterization detail I wish more people would write is ‘evil can love, too’, a la Kate Argent, who is unquestionably a villain but also clearly loves and wants to both protect and educate her niece Allison.

Also, linking to tv tropes without a warning? Tsk, tsk, that’s a dangerous game.

I've never seen it but I think that sounds awful - don't destroy characterization (especially interesting characterization) dammit!

Agreed! I was just talking about this the other day: in Harry Potter (for example) everyone hates all Slytherins - not just bad ones or mean ones or evil ones. ALL of them. People assume they did it and they are guilty and they deserve to have things taken, or be punished, etc. One of the biggest assumptions is that Slytherins care about nothing and no one - and somehow of all the things to be preachy about this prejudice and one-dimensional character laziness portrayals don't make the list. So, no one (or fandom at large, anyway) focuses on love between family, friends, or lovers for Slytherins because they are evil. I...kinda hate it. :(

... ^_______^ *is not evil I swear*

Ah, the Slytherins. You are SO not the only person who has this complaint. It’s one of those times where I can see what happened – Rowling needed an antagonistic house for various plots and social dynamics to work, but then once things started having consequence in the larger world, she ended up with a fourth of the school who are just designated evil.

And I’m surprised to hear you say that fandom in general doesn’t get this – my corner of fandom was TOTALLY aware of how the slytherins were all tarred with the same brush to give Harry and co. antagonists.

I suppose it depended on when I was in the fandom too...the first time I heard any acknowledgment of this was in a Draco/Hermione story and I was like, "Finally!" I just didn't see it often. Honestly, I'm much happier knowing that I missed it rather than no one noticed. ^^
