We're Like, Team Lady Spiders

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE 21 WAS AMAZING AND EVERYTHING I DREAM OF COMICS BEING. IT'S JESS, NATASHA, AND ANYA TEAMING UP AND KICKING ASS AND IT'S ONE OF THOSE ISSUES WHERE YOU COUNT INTERACTIONS THAT DON'T PASS THE BECHDEL TEST, NOT THE ONES WHO DO, BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS IT A SUPERHEROINE TEAM-UP ISSUE, IT IS AN ISSUE WITH DRIVEN, EVIL LADY SCIENTISTS AND EVIL DIMENSION-JUMPING LADY MERCENARIES.

THIS COMIC MIGHT AS WELL HAVE BEEN CALLED 'LADIES WHO KICK ASS TOGETHER STAY TOGETHER.' IT WAS AWESOME AND I WISH MORE COMICS WERE LIKE THIS.

EXACTLY. I WANT ALL COMICS TO BE LIKE THIS.

THAT AND HAWKEYE #14. PURE, UNADULTERATED SUPERHERO JOY, BUT STILL WITH PLENTY OF FEELS. NONE OF THESE BROODING, GRIMDARK MANPAIN FESTS THAT MANAGE TO BE BOTH CYNICAL AND LACKING IN SELF-AWARENESS AT THE SAME TIME.

COMIC BOOK WRITERS TAKE NOTE.

I still haven't had a chance to read the lastest Hawkeye (the source where I get my cbr files has not uploaded it yet) but I CANNOT WAIT.

Exactly. Exactly. I've been reading some random DC comics (because they're about dudes I'm invested in) and oh my god, so terrible.

What bothers me about the grimdark manpain stuff (apart from, y'know, the manpain) is the way the writers and the fans seem to think it's SO MATURE AND WELL WRITTEN YO. Winter Soldier was issue after issue of Bucky whining and making really poor decisions and plot lines that made no sense. It's not mature or well written because he beat up a few guys while drinking, and it felt to me like Brubaker was kind of ashamed of writing in the superhero genre.

Then you have Avengers Assemble and Hawkeye, which embrace the genre while at the same time breaking conventions and writing good character development.

Yep. I think working with themes of hope and humor can often be HARDER to write in a believable way.

*nods* And it's not like those don't have their moments of sorrow, but they remember the joy of comics that I think some writers forget or try to ignore.
