In honor of International Women's Day, stainofmylove has a post here where you can go and celebrate your favorite fictional ladies.

Also, perfect for a rainy Saturday....

Fandom Tennis Match Meme:

Okay, here's how this is going to work. You comment with a fandom question. I answer it and then ask you a question that has some thematic relevance to the question you asked me.

Okay, so this post is going around my dashboard:

Screen Shot 2014-02-07 at 12.41.21 AM

but let's be real, that list is very abridged because it's missing:

Jane Foster  ♥ SCIENCE: comes with space boyfriend

Pepper Potts 1: professionally better than you

Pepper Potts 2: still professionally better than you

Pepper Potts 3: the rise of Rescue

Agent Peggy Carter & The Howling Commandos

  • I have once again continued my horrible habit of doing real-life financial book-keeping late at night on Sundays. I should know better but I clearly don't.

  • I had an impromptu coffee date with [livejournal.com profile] qualapec this afternoon, which was a blast, and resulted in:

  • I erased my amazon wishlist. It had been how I'd been keeping track of books, and I had books on there that I hadn't read in the TEN YEARS they had been on my wishlist, so. Two clicks, and it was gone. I saved the most recent books, but other than that, it's all deleted. I also culled a few of my physical to-read books.

  • [livejournal.com profile] qualapec and I realized that if Steve's plan goes down in 1944, depending on which month you place that, you have AT LEAST four months to a year and change in which PEGGY CARTER COULD BE LEADING THE HOWLING COMMANDOS AROUND THE EUROPEAN THEATER. God, I cannot express how much I want that. Like, I can just see Peggy coming out of that radio tower (she probably fixed her mascara before hand) so she looks both devastated and perfect and the Commandos (who have, iirc, lost their two highest ranking soldiers) are like, "what now, ma'am?" and Agent Peggy Carter says, "Now we go win the war, gentlemen."

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE 21 WAS AMAZING AND EVERYTHING I DREAM OF COMICS BEING. IT'S JESS, NATASHA, AND ANYA TEAMING UP AND KICKING ASS AND IT'S ONE OF THOSE ISSUES WHERE YOU COUNT INTERACTIONS THAT DON'T PASS THE BECHDEL TEST, NOT THE ONES WHO DO, BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS IT A SUPERHEROINE TEAM-UP ISSUE, IT IS AN ISSUE WITH DRIVEN, EVIL LADY SCIENTISTS AND EVIL DIMENSION-JUMPING LADY MERCENARIES.

[livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 asked me about Black Canary and I had enough to say about Dinah Lance (comics verse) that I decided to make this a post of its own.

Things I love about DC comics’ Black Canary a.k.a Dinah Lance:

  • I love that she’s a well-known female superhero who’s well-known for her role on an all-ladies superhero team – not because she’s Green Arrow’s love interest.

  • I love that she’s one of the top hand-to-hand fighters in the DC universe.*

  • I love that her code name is feminine without being explicitly female (e.g. Lady Shiva, Batgirl, etc).

  • I love that she’s a female legacy hero who did not take her name from a male figure; Dinah took up the mantle and was inspired by her mother.

*In general, I find it delightful that the top martial artists in the DC verse are all ladies: you have Lady Shiva, who was THE BEST martial artist (dying at her hands will bring honor to your family in several countries) who thought Dinah had enough promise that Lady Shiva wanted to train Dinah, and Lady Shiva was eventually defeated by her daughter, Cassandra Cain (future Batman).

Okay, I actually really like Wonder Woman's costume redesign for this movie. Yes, she's not wearing any pants, but her costume still looks really functional, it's clearly referencing her original outfit without being like OH MY GOD, PATRIOTISM, she has the nice bare shoulders/bracers combination which always looks fierce as fuck, and there is NO CLEAVAGE. Thumbs up in my book.

So, I just read Stephanie's run as Robin, War Games, and the couple of issues that have her coming back and I'm about ready to crawl into a fetal position and sob.

I just want to point out this panel:

Steph's done this in Robin comics too - automatically understood the dynamics of a criminal enterprise - and it just struck me as a unique skill that I've never seen people mention when they talk about Steph.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] latenightcuppa, come talk to me about Steph's hallucinatory conversations with Cassandra, cause that was trope-y as fuck.

I came across a meme on tumblr, which asked you to list your favorite characters from least cynical to most. And then I ended up having to retype the whole effing thing about three different times. So here it is, finally:

Male Characters:

Zuko> Han Solo > Clint Barton > Mal Reynolds > Jack Bristow

Female Characters:

Kate Bishop > Cameron > Faith Lehane > Natasha Romanoff > Adelle deWitt

I really liked thinking about this question ‘who is more cynical?’ but it actually wound up being way too easy.

The men are a slow, consistent slide from heart-of-gold dude with a shell of cynicism and anger to heart-of-gold-dude with a MUCH THICKER shell of cynicism and anger.

The female characters were pretty evenly divided between an optimist (Katie-Kate) and my violence, morally compromised ladies (Faith, Natasha, Adelle) right at Cameron, who I would argue is neither cynical nor optimistic.

Several people asked for further context for bullet point 3, so here is some Stephanie Brown/Damian Wayne not!fic:

Also, on the subject of Stephanie Brown, I get so fucking irritated with finding these beautiful, beautiful Dick/Jason/Tim/Damian fanarts. Like, I realize that Stephanie is not a pretty boy with dark hair, and I realize that people are tuning into 'the sons of Bruce Wayne' vibe, but seriously. STEPH WAS A ROBIN, OKAY?

First of all a rec:

No Dawn, No Day, Stephanie Brown/Damian Wayne

(Read the pdf of the main story first, then if you desire, look at the side stories.)

(There are two endings, btw, and both are awesome for different reasons, but one involves character death.)

I was so thrilled to stumble upon this fic. It’s long, it’s character driven, it’s GLORIOUS.

It takes all the threads of Stephanie Brown’s stories – basically, all the ways that DC screwed her over (the not-really-a-Robin thing, Bruce-Wayne’s-Batman’s lack of trust in her, the teen pregnancy) and resolves them in natural ways that feel organic to the story. It hit me in the middle of the story that, without feeling forced or preachy, the author was gracefully acerbating and then healing all of this trauma that Stephanie carries with her.

She also deals with the toxic Batman legacy vis-a-vis Damian Wayne and Jason Todd as well. I’m not 100% sold on her Jason Todd characterization, but especially towards the end, there are some fantastic character beats for him.(Milkshakes! Stephanie’s ringtone is “Walking on Sunshine”! He answers the phone in the middle of a gunfight!)

Other things that I loved about this story:

  • Damian being head-over-heels in love and terrible at expressing it!

  • An adorable kitten!

  • An epic Pretty Woman-esque moment, followed by a truly epic verbal bitchslapping!

  • Damian being the most amusing brat ever!

  • Great upgrade of Harley Quinn!

Now, it must be said, I get the majority of my opinions about the Batfamily second hand (but I trust y’alls taste, so).

That is one of the MANY reasons why I think it’s a TERRIBLE idea for DC to try and reboot Batman with Batman vs. Superman.

Besides being a not-great idea for a movie in the first place, what DC really needs to do is create a Batman (and a movie-verse) that can believably have a Justice League. Which is why a trilogy of movies about the Batfamily could be so brilliant.

First, a Batman who is, by definition, interacting with another superheroes logically leads to a world that could support a Justice League. Secondly, a Batman who has a Batfamily (especially a Batfamily dealing with the weight and hypocrisies of his legacy) is so much more interesting than some square-jawed dude brooding. Third OH MY GOD HAVE YOU NOT PAID ATTENTION TO THE DRAMATIC POTENTIAL DRIPPING OFF THESE CHARACTERS? Dick Grayson, who both broke broke away from and struggles to be his father-figure! Jason Todd, who Came Back Wrong and with a morality that 85% of theater-goers are going very as 100% valid vigilante justice! The unsinkable Stephanie Brown, who is a hero because she refuses to be anything less!

(Sidenote, think about how visually perfect Stephanie Brown would be in Gotham’s night – her blonde hair as this light in the shadows, the visual representation of her innate optimism and the triumph of the human spirit. Awww, and now I’m imagining a conversation in a dark room between Stephanie and Jason, where she’s sitting in the stripped light that’s coming in from the broken blinds and he’s leaning against the wall, the only thing visible the glint of his eyes, the glow of his cigarette, and that shock of white hair.)

(Sorry, Timothy Drake and Cassandra Cain, I do not have opinions about you.)

Basically, DC. MAKE ME A BATFAMILY MOVIE.

In other news, all the speculated casting for Batman I’ve heard has been terrible. So, so terrible. I know! It’s time for a round of Batman-verse fan-casting. And…. go.

There was this great post on tumblr that prompted me to have Tony/Pepper feelings, which are:

Pepper pushing the button at the climax of Iron Man is one of the least significant roles she plays in the story. Iron Man falls apart if Pepper isn't there because Tony's reaction to Pepper lets us know pretty immediately that while Tony is living this playboy life style he also has people that he cares about and ALSO, Pepper's reaction to Tony, the rooftop, the martini, show that just because you're a superhero, doesn't mean you get a pass on treating people well.

So, apparently we’re going to be getting a Peggy Carter short? I’m really excited. Please have her hunting Nazis post movie. PLEASE.

I mean, I have my complaints about the writing in the Captain America movie, especially in regards to Peggy, but it fills me with delight that Hayley Atwell and Marvel had enough people invested in that character and asking after her that Marvel decided it was a good movie to make a short starring her. Seriously, I’m getting misty.

Does anyone have recommendations for books about bad girls? Girls who are not nice? Who prioritize their survival over other people?

Because I was reading the opening of Keturah and Lord Death and when I got to the part (about four pages in, so not a spoiler) where Death tells the heroine that he’ll spare her if she names someone she’s prefer to die in her place and she’s like, ‘oh, no, I couldn’t possibly!’ and I’m like, ‘BOOM, DONE WITH YOU, POLLYANNA.’ It could have been anyone! It could have been someone she hated! Someone she barely new! Sweet jesus, I can think of five people who I’d be willing to trade for my life WITHIN THIRTY SECONDS.

Come talk to me. About whatever.

Right now, I can't sleep and my Sunday is going to be full of nothing in particular (okay, a lot of chores and not looking forward to monday, so fandom thoughts are always a plus).

Things that are currently on my mind:

  • Zuko/Katara. Forever awesome. Forever bitter.

  • Lydia Martin week is coming up on tumblr. I didn't have a chance to do anything for Allison Argent week, so I'm considering writing Lydia/Allison. No plot bunnies as yet.

  • Allison Argent is totally my hair inspiration. About six months ago I cut my hair short (for me, which is shoulder length) and I've kept it that way, but I think it's time to start growing it out again because every time I see her awesome locks I just get so envious. That said, I'm REALLY BUMMED that it looks like Crystal Reed dyed her hair blonde. I'm hoping that she did so AFTER filming season three of Teen Wolf.

  • Because AO3 and my Kindle iTouch app are wonderful, I am one again interested in reading epic fanfics. (Epic as in long.) Any recommendations?

  • I'm also in the process of downloading all my favorite fanfics to my iTouch, so even if I don't have internet, I'll have fanfic.

  • I'm planning on doing a meme regarding my top ten pairings EVER, in order, so right now I'm braining storming all my 'I'll ship it IN HELL' pairings.

So, a couple of things showed up at the same time in my fannish life that I want to talk about. First, I learned about Ginnifer Goodwin's comment that Swan Queen was never going to happen because Once Upon A Time is a "family show", I was listening to femmeslash for fans show on Subtext 101,

and then I read this article, Why Embracing Slash Is Good For Everybody.

Let me bottom line it.

SUBTEXT IS NOT FUCKING REPRESENTATION.

ABC is not going to write Swan Queen (or ANY homosexual romance in their show about true love and blood family) because they are not going to risk offending viewers.

RDJ's Sherlock Holmes was never going to make out with John Watson because the studio isn't going to risk offending viewers.

Trust me, studios are already "embracing slash" in their 100% mercenary way, which is by showing deep, complex, meaningful and nuanced relationships between TWO WHITE DUDES without ever having to commit to actually writing homosexual characters.

That's what all those buddy cop shows and bromance movies are all about.

And the result of this, the part that really HITS ME WHERE I LIVE, is that "embracing slash" MEANS THROWING THE FUCKING FEMALE CHARACTERS THAT I LOVE UNDER THE BUS.

Do you know what it looks like when a show feeds the slashers? It looks like fucking Supernatural, where every goddamn awesome good/neutral/evil lady winds up dead.

The reason that there is not a gay Avenger is because MARVEL STUDIOS DIDN'T HAVE THE BALLS TO WRITE ANY OF THE AVENGERS AS GAY.

DO YOU KNOW WHY THERE ISN'T A BLACK WIDOW MOVIE ALREADY IN PRE-PRODUCTION? BECAUSE HOLLYWOOD DOESN'T THINK A WOMAN CAN HEADLINE A MOVIE.

And none of that is fucking okay.

The mainstream media is throwing scraps of representation at the audience and some people are pretending that it's enough. It's fucking not, and honestly, to me personally, it feels like a slap in the face.

Stop pretending to be inclusive of homosexuality and fucking be inclusive of homosexuality.

Realize that audiences can handle and fucking love movies with female/poc/homosexual (or all of the above) leads and film them.
