There's No Such Thing As An Atheist In Foxhole

Today, I have

-maimed my computer.

-dropped a marble-top bedside table on my foot

and tried to steam green beans without water which resulted in me:

-melting a pot

-ruining one of the elements of Darth Vader, our stove, as well as the drip bowl.

This is the conversation that followed.

Mom: ...so do you think you can handle chopping garlic?

Me: I dunno....

Mom: The knife is pretty sharp, be careful. [..]I want to go outside for a minute, do you think you can watch dinner?

Me: Mom, have you been paying attention to what's happened so far this evening?

Mom: Right, I'll finish cooking.

Me: *in a massive funk*

Mom: Wow, you certainly get up from a nap in a different mood when you don't have manga waiting for you! (context: yesterday, I woke up groggy and bleery eyed to find three volumes of Black Cat outside my door. I ended up dancing around the living room. Usually once I fall asleep, it take at least and hour for me to be a functional human being again.)

Me: Yeah, it's amazing the difference between getting manga and tormenting the other half of my soul!

Now my foot hurts and I can't sleep. So, I kinda really need to talk about my OTPs right now, m'kay? (gacked from [personal profile] the_sun_is_up)

List the first five OTPs that come into your head.

1.) Katara/Zuko

2.) Sakura/Kakashi

3.) Lust/Scar

4.) Veronica/Weevil

5.) Neji/Hinata

1. When did you first fall in love with ship number 1? (Katara/Zuko.)

When, weary unto death of Saiyuki fandom and it's endless sea of slash with only rare, fleeting, and lonely glimpses of het on far-off shores, [personal profile] smillaraaq said, 'have you heard about Avatar? It's this great cartoon with cool chicks, awesome fights, and the het enemies!pairing is the most popular ship in the fandom.'

And then there was "I'll save you from the slash pirates!' and I was like, DAMN RIGHT YOU WILL!

2. When did you fall in love with ship number 5? (Neji/Hinata)

When they were standing on the floor of the chuunin exams, and Hinata was calling the angry boy trying to kill her "brother" and refusing to back down.

3.What is your favorite moment of ship number 3? (Lust/Scar)

"Why did you step in front of me?"

"My body moved on its own."

Oh, my poor doomed, fucked up awesome ship. Soulless creatures are the most beautiful things in love.

4. What will the ship be if you take the boy from ship 2 and the girl from ship 1 and mesh them? (Kakashi/Katara.)

Let's take a minute to contemplate how FUCKING AWESOME AND NINJA-TASTIC THEIR STORMBENDING!BABIES WOULD BE! That said, I think their relationship would end up working too much like Shikamaru/Temari, in negative ways. (In that Kakashi is less of a jackass than Shikamaru, doesn't need the kicks in the ass Shikamaru does to be a decent human being, and deserves kinder than Kakata would give him. See, Kakashi is pretty detached from most things, and I think Katara, who is so passionate about everything, would be very frustrated with him. Katara needs someone who's not half dead, emotionally, and Kakashi needs someone who understands WHY he is the way he is, which Sakura does. Regardless of how well Sakura follows Rule 25, she understands it.)

5. Vise versa (Sakura/Zuko).

This on the other hand, would work quite well. Sakura's passion for helping people + her ninja skills? Win. I can just see her sneaking about protecting vital people and retrieving important documents for Fire Lord Zuko, and he'd love and respect her, especially since they're both people who have had to work so much harder than the people around them to achieve their awesome skillz.

But their poor children, you know? Getting slow-bloomer genes from both sides would suck.

6. What's your favorite moment for ship 4? (Veronica/Weevil)

Probably when Veronica gets him out of jail in the second episode or when Weevi gets all up in Logan's face after picking her up from the Echolls house no questions asked.

7. How long was there between the time you got into the fandom and the time you started shipping ship number 3? (Lust/Scar)

I was shipping it before I was in the fandom.

8. When did you start shipping ship number 4? (Veronica/Weevil).

First episode, when Weevil was trashing the minivan after Logan broke Veronica's headlights.

9. Take three random people from three of the ships and create an OT3?

Lust x Neji x Katara.

Because the pile of brunette hotness would be fantastic.

10. Rank your OTPs in order.

1.) Kakashi/Sakura (only because that's what I'm most interested in reading right now.)

2.) Katara/Zuko (because despite my ugly, ugly break up with the fandom and the show, I love you crazy kids to death.)

3.) Lust/Scar (because you're epic)

4.) Veronica/Weevil (only this far down on the list because I'm not in the fandom)

5.) Neji/Hinata (are last because even the violent pseudo-incest can't beat out 'in love with my dead brother's alchemical mistake who's also the woman I loved when she as doing my brother, who I also loved' boy and 'I'll I want is to be human what are these feelings inside' badass girl.)

And I think they'd all do dramatic hair-cutting things at some point, too. It'd be amazing.

Sorry, I just had to cut in because that nearly made me die of laughter!

Even at the time, it was entertaining. But mostly tragic.

And you're so right! They would do fantastically dramatic hair cutting things when under stress! They so would!

Out of curiosity, when did you break up with the ATLA fandom? ::didn't notice:: I assume you broke up with the show at the finale...

YES about Sakura/Zuko. I can see that working well. Zuko's just enough like Sasuke on the outside, but inside Zuko is all the things Sasuke isn't that 12 year old Sakura wished he was: noble, passionate, devoted. He's the angsty prince who not only would let her "save" him, but is actually worth saving.

You're right about Kakashi/Katara, too. However, that being said... I think if Katara were ten years older, say she's 24 to Kakashi's 26, then it might work out much better. Katara would have evened out in terms of balancing her deep-seated inner anger with her naturally pleasant and kindly disposition. And she'd be a little more patient. Then, I think, she could get along with Kakashi well--Katara understands losing a parent at that age, and she understands people dying in war and growing up in a period when her village was under constant threat. He's a bad boy *and* he's highly talented. And he's not likely to coddle or underestimate her.

I would never put Katara with Shikamaru, however, and I don't think Kakashi has that much in common with Shikamaru except for intelligence and arrogance.

...man, these pairings are messing with my head now.

And, for the record, I disagree with multiple core assumptions in the line "There's No Such Thing As An Atheist In Foxhole."

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there are some pretty insulting assumptions made.

I personally find it fitting in that I hate Christianity, but when stressful stressful things happen, I find it feels really unnatural to try to bargain/pray with 'goddess' or 'universe' but saying 'god' in my head feels both more natural and hypocritical.

...and here ends redbrunja's theological angst.
ext_10182: Anzo-Berrega Desert (Bright Imperious Line - Zuko/Katara)

on the other hand, I always liked the word "foxhole"

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think one of the biggest assumptions in the aforementioned line is the idea that for everyone else God=Universe. I'm pretty sure I read that in the 1960s or something there was the first world conference on Buddhism and one of the few things that all the spiritual leaders present agreed upon was that there is no single God Creator. Technically, that makes them all atheists. But they certainly acknowledge the universe, and I'm kind of in that camp myself.

but saying 'god' in my head feels both more natural and hypocritical.

I long ago gave up trying to stop saying "Oh god" or feeling hypocritical because I really think its part of our linguistic culture. Even though you're not supposed to speak god's name in vain we're nevertheless taught and reaffirmed repeatedly that "ohgod" or "goddamn" are particular expressions in our language that are appropriate at particular times. "ohshit" is too rude and "ohcrap" is not big enough.

Re: on the other hand, I always liked the word "foxhole"

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's definitively on of those judo-christian linguistic things that are imbedded in our culture.

Well, during the long, long hiatias after Boiling Rock, I was like, 'I think we need to see other people' and went off to screw around with Naruto, and then fandoms reaction to Southern Raiders was the end of the long, protracted break up fight that started with fandom's reaction to the end of WAT.

After that, people who see no problem with the finale except the fact that Suki was there (fucking bitch with her boobs and femininity she's unashamed of, that useless whore) and are like, 'oh, Aang is a hero! He stayed true to his morals!'

(Note: Usually I am REALLY GOOD at seeing and being okay with other people's opinions, but Aang? No. At this point, I hate him, and my pulse kicks up whenever I hear people squee or defend him. Which is another reason I got out of the fandom - I could feel myself becoming a fanbrat and it wasn't fun for me, and I have too much pride to be that person who ruins fandoms or is unreasonable and impossible to disagree with rationally.)

Word. I want to do a post about how much I WANT to like Sasuke, and why I just CAN'T (it boils down to one thing) but I'm holding off because the easiest way to illustrate my point would be to compare him to Zuko, and I just don't know if I can do that. Zuko> Sasuke to infinity.

And I agree about an older Katara working much better with Kakashi, although I still don't think he'd be the BEST person for her. Actually, at the moment, I can't think of anyone who is awesome enough/would actually be good in a relationship with her from Naruto.

I would never put Katara with Shikamaru, however, and I don't think Kakashi has that much in common with Shikamaru except for intelligence and arrogance.

Oh, gods yes. Kakashi is SUCH a better person than Shikamaru, and I think he deserves a kinder wife that Shikamaru needs. (And I say that loving the Shikamaru/Temari relationship.)

Probably not the best, but I can imagine it working. I also think that Katara if she were raised as a ninja would be considerably more comfortable with violence and ruthlessness than Katara of the Water Tribe. Konoha would take her natural capacity for judgmental behavior and ruthless protection of the things she loves (oh, Katara is like the sea more than she'll ever be fire), and turn her into a strong and competent warrior... not unlike what Sakura is now, though Katara would benefit from being naturally talented and an early bloomer rather than late like Sakura. Kakashi could never be with or understand Katara of the Water Tribe, but a Katara of Hidden Leaf... they could definitely have things in common.

I can't think of anyone who is awesome enough/would actually be good in a relationship with her from Naruto.

Honestly? Sakura.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
OH, yes, Katara of the Hidden Leaf would totally work with Kakashi - but not so much Katara of the Water Tribe. And you're right; only Sakura is awesome enough for Katara.

*hugs*

Shoot, I haven't finished watching Veronica Mars.
Totally agree about the Veronica/Weevil stuff, though.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

And define 'finished' because all you should do is finish the firs season. Then stop there.

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't finished the first season (all I planned on watching) I think the last episode I watched was the one with the young-looking FBI agent?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's a good episode. That was the one where I suddenly went 'Logan/Veronica? that many not be crazy talk!'

And I have the first season, so if you don't mind watching it on a computer, let me know.

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Logan went to her rescue, didn't he? Weevil/Veronica/Logan threesome, yes/no?

On a computer was how I was watching it, so that'd be fine.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
He did. And I would say threesome, except I can't image Weevil and Logan to be coooperative enough for that... although competition can do wonderful things, sometimes...

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there was the episode where they had detention together. And pulled the Amazing/Cruel Prank on the teacher, and Logan gave himself up (though knowing there was no way they'd kick him out) to keep Weevil from getting expelled.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's true...

Actually, I liked the second season. Not as good, but still filled with some awesome moments. And a few mysteries leftover from season 1 (not the big one, of course) carry over and are resolved in season 2. Definitely stop there, however.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
The second season drove me CRAZY.

By the finale, I was LITERALLY biting my lip because I was watching it with someone who was really enjoying it, and I didn't want to ruin his fun.

You know, I've thought about Neji/Hinata, and I just can't do it. The incest squicks me out way too hard. My mother is an identical twin, and I had this mind-fuck realization one day that, genetically, my aunt's children are my half-siblings. I don't know if Hiashi and Hizashi were identical but if they were Neji and Hinata essentially have the same father. They're way closer than just cousins. I know clans were probably like European monarcy but even that's closer than they would go.

That's a pretty superficial reason, I guess, but it's there.

Also, my brain breaks a little when I try to imagine Kakashi/Katara. Like, if I imagine her older I see her as such a mother figure, and she would pretty much smother him and he'd be poofing off to read Icha Icha at every opportunity. If I try to imagine younger Kakashi... God damn that boy was fucked up. He was way more broken than even Katara could fix.

You know what makes me laugh about Sakura/Zuko? How hardcore she could kick his ass. She'd totally wear the pants in the relationship (all of the pants. Every single pair of pants in the palace), and Zuko would constantly be his slightly inept, dorky self that I love so much.

(BTW, thank you for pointing me to [livejournal.com profile] icon_benders, that's where I got this icon from. Feel free to gank it :D)

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I actually think 'hey, they're related' is a great reason not to ship a pairing, personally. I totally understand. Frankly, I have the suspicion that if I WASN'T an only child fandom wouldn't have worn me down on my incest squick. (And if there are characters who both ACT like family and ARE - oh, man, I get squicked so hard. Frankly, Hinata/Neji was new for me in that usually incest sends me running in the other direction.)

If I try to imagine younger Kakashi... God damn that boy was fucked up. He was way more broken than even Katara could fix.

And Katara deserves SO MUCH better than a husband who doesn't get her and a boy she needs to fix. No, that relationship would be so very, very fucked up.

Sakura/Zuko would be awesome, though. Sakura would wear the pants, and Zuko would love it.

You're welcome! I'm so glad that you got that icon, and thanks for the okay! I'll have to see which other icon I can bear parting with. ^_^
strange_quark: (naruto: sakura hair)

[personal profile] strange_quark 2008-08-21 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
See, I actually think I could be okay with slightly incestuous Neji/Hinata: like, both Hyuuga but maybe second cousins or something. I think the dynamics are interesting. But they are so close. I'm normally pretty open minded when it comes to ships (I have read, and liked, Kisame/Sakura. Explain that one, because I can't) and keeping in mind that they're fictional characters, but I literally cannot read this pairing. Because when you combine the fact that they're so closely related on top of the clear difference in power between Neji and Hinata... It makes me shiver in a bad way.

It may be a little what you said about personal background, too, because I have siblings and cousins and half-siblings and, like I said, sort-of-half-siblings. So I can't help thinking "that would be like me and X" which results in "OMG DO. NOT. WANT."

And Katara deserves SO MUCH better than a husband who doesn't get her and a boy she needs to fix.

It's a good thing she didn't end up with anyone like that in the finale.

OH WAIT.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods*

Yeah, I really think personal experience is a factor. The power differntials don't bug me because of the personalities involved, with Hinata/Neji. Neji's amazing abilities + resistance to being a slave seems pretty equivalent to Hinata's not liking the main house division and not wanting to follow that path.

And thank god Katara dodged that bullet... only not.

[identity profile] terenewen.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
