I feel like I should apologize for continuing to inflict my unusually politically-aware self on you. I don't know, it's like I suddenly care about my country or something. ^_^

But I've been watching the news at the gym lately (nothing like a little extra rage to burn calories) and listening to Rachel Maddow (marry me and have smart, politically active lesbian babies, plz) and I have Thoughts.

Mainly, GOP: seriously? Did you learn nothing from the election? Palin = the devil. I know it's hard, but I'm sure that there is some other republican who also has a vagina. Find her, and stop threatening the country with Palin like she's a cross and we're a country of vampires

On the subject of things that need a stake to the chest to die (and wow is that metaphor fucked up) am I the only person who was unimpressed with Robert Pattison's latest interview? Look, I am not saying that the books or the movie are any good but have some respect. That movie you made is going to be sending your kids to college. I know that at this point you're gunning to get fired but you signed a contact and weren't possessed at the time, so deal. Nothing strikes me as more unprofessional than wanting to quit and making your boss fire you because you don't want to deal with the consequences.

(I see both sides of this, but there is a certain line between being realistic about the movie you made and acting like an arrogant dickhead, and imho he crossed the line, however lol-tastic it was to hear the actor saying what we've all be saying for the past year. At this point, I'm feeling sorry for the fans. Can you imagine how awful it is to have the stars of a movie based off on a book you love dissing it?)

Best Palin metaphor I've EVER heard. It's only use, the "unreal" Americans who are the vampires. *sigh*

Thank you.

No, I'm pretty much with the crowd that love the fact that he actually tells it like it is with regards to Twilight. And if he wants to get fired from the Twilight movies, more power to him, I encourage this.

The only reason Palin got picked was because she's extremely, extremely conservative. There are other, better qualified, well-respected, powerhouse women in the Republican party who would have helped McCain. It's not just her being a woman: in that sense, she's a poor choice. McCain should have known better than to assume she'd court many women voters. But her other point was to court the religious right, which was never enamored of McCain, and in that limited scope she worked.

I didn't see the interview, but if Pattinson wants out of the contract, more power to him, in my opinion. I'd quit if I had to play that part for three more movies. I guess if I was a fan of the books it would suck to hear them dissed, but in this case I honestly don't care. They're bad books. People should be aware of this fact. Hell, I enjoy books I know are bad, but at least I know they're wretched. They're my guilty pleasures. But I think some Twilight fans think they're the greatest tale of romance ever and I just. Want to throw. Jane Austen at them.
Friday, November 14th, 2008 03:53 pm (UTC)
I totally agree with you on Twilight. It's a guilty pleasure for me and I know they aren't great books (just like Harry Potter in a lot of ways, actually). I must ramble off to find this interview of lolz.
Friday, November 14th, 2008 09:58 pm (UTC)
I've read three of the Twilight books, though I don't think I ever liked them. But yeah, Harry Potter was a little like that. Although I think the series starts out pretty strong. It's not the greatest fantasy epic, and she's not the best writer, but my favorite part of any fantasy series is the world building and I think JKR did this well. In the first few books the sense of discovering the world along with the protagonist really kept me going, got me really invested. The later books are weaker because we've already learned most things, and now we're into character development and nitty-gritty plot details, which are shakier.

I was personally thinking of The Da Vinci Code and its prequel Angels and Demons, which I liked but fully acknowledge were terrible.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 03:38 am (UTC)
I agree on HP, I love the first few books and especially the descriptions of school life in the first book (and Gred and Forge singing the school song to the death march and all those little details). I guess that must have been it for me, the nitty gritty.

I never read The Davinci Code but I guess "popular" books these days are following a trend or something. :p

Oh, thank you for that clarification. I always thought Palin was a very bad choice because she seemed to be supposed to get the 'woman's vote' but if she was aiming for the RR... that make sense.

I didn't see the interview, but if Pattinson wants out of the contract, more power to him, in my opinion. I'd quit if I had to play that part for three more movies.

Yeah, but did you read the script, audition for the part, and then sign a contract to do it? I mean, I understand that this is way more popular than he thought it would be but he already agreed to do it. If you want to quit that badly, quit.

Yeah, if McCain wanted a woman to really and truly court women voters, he'd have picked Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who was (and still may be) the fifth ranked Republican in congress and has been dubbed one of the most powerful women in the US. But, oops, she's against making abortion illegal, can't have that, our bestest buddies won't like it.

I looked below at your synopsis of the interview, and... Yeah, okay, I guess that's kind of disrespectful. I get a kick out of it because someone had to say it, but it's pretty unprofessional.

Then again, so much of Hollywood is. It's not the most audacious thing an actor's ever said.

ETA: Regarding Palin, I'm not exactly broken up about her trying to make larger tracks in her party. She's ridiculous and all but the far right think so. I have a Republican friend who was leaning McCain until the VP picks, and when she found out more about Palin she very quickly made up her mind to vote Obama. She'll give the GOP a bad name, and I think that's a very, very good thing.

*nods* I don't like her position on the enviroment, but she would have been a MUCH better choice than Palin (imho). And I'm pleased to find some pro-choice republicians.\

Yes. And for someone who is DIRECTLY benefiting from the work in question... I think he should be playing a wee bit nicer.

It is, but part of me is like, 'why are american politics so insane that she is still around?'
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 04:51 am (UTC)
I'm kind of glad McCain didn't pick a better choice, you know? That ticket would have been dangerous. And there are pro-choice Republicans, or socially middle-ground Republicans, and they support the party because of the economic policies. Which, y'know, I don't agree with, but at least they're not for taking away rights.

Yes. And for someone who is DIRECTLY benefiting from the work in question... I think he should be playing a wee bit nicer.

Yeah, probably.

It is, but part of me is like, 'why are american politics so insane that she is still around?'

Consequence of representational democracy, really.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 06:08 am (UTC)
Oh, yes, me too. But part of me gets kinda curious, like, I don't think all republicians are morons, so why didn't they run a better campaign. (But I am SO glad they didn't.)

Consequence of representational democracy, really.

Yeah, that whole 'let the people decide' creates some CRAZY things.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 07:54 am (UTC)
I think it's a combination of him expecting to be able to run the same kind of campaign Bush did (trying to run Obama's name through the mud forces you to resort to very petty critiques) and the trend that Americans seem to vote Democrat in times of economic crisis.

Yeah, that whole 'let the people decide' creates some CRAZY things.

What were we thinking, leaving the happy safety of the British monarchy?

.. Do you suppose they'll take us back? Or is it a little late for that? We should ask [livejournal.com profile] bellzooks
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 12:13 pm (UTC)
Well, I already have dips on her hand in matriomony if our country ever takes a turn for the worse that justifies jumping ship.
Friday, November 14th, 2008 03:55 pm (UTC)
I think Rob should have thought more on it before he signed on to do Twilight. He was in a Harry Potter movie for gods sake! He should based on just doing one of those movies how insane fans are and all the jazz that comes with it.

Which interview are you talking about btw?

Friday, November 14th, 2008 05:52 pm (UTC)
That is a really good point.

And I'm talking about the one where he calls SM 'mad and in love with her own character.' And while I think it's true, I think it's extraordinary disrespectful for him to say that about the author whose book is going to make him famous and rich.

I am guessing that the election was the first time she got out of Alaska in a seriously long time. She felt dazzled by all the bright lights and the crowds, and the "exotic" places. I don't think she wants to stay in Alaska. hahaha!

I haven't kept track of any of the Twilight stuff. I think the both of us should go see it together and laugh at all of the inappropriate parts. We will totally get beaten up in a back alley after wards.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 01:22 am (UTC)
I am tempted to see the movie, except I refuse to pay money to do so.

Meyer is a Mormon and is required to give a huge amount of her income to the church - the chuch that just poured money into California to get Prop 8 passed.

Hell yeah.

Totally agreeing with you re: Palin. The sooner they realize what a total fucking disaster she'd be in the White House, the better. Who knows if it'll actually happen though; they need an entire party overhaul.

I disagree on RPattz, though. I found it hilarious he said the things he did about the books (I haven't read them, but seen enough summaries/excerpts/hype from them to not want to, now) even though he's the primary figure in them. Dude's got some balls! I wonder if Stephenie Meyer sees/hears the interviews.

Someone somewhere posted something that said Meyer, Pattz, and Kristen Stewart will be hosting an interview altogether somewhere...that should be interesting. Will he edit himself, or will he tell it like it is? :D We can only hope.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 01:21 am (UTC)
I'm curious myself.
Friday, November 14th, 2008 04:42 pm (UTC)
IMO, the only reason we got Palin was because McCain couldn't convince Condoleeza Rice to to be VP on his ticket. I also think McCain would have won with Condoleeza Rice on his ticket.

Twilight: I think the first time he said it, he was "wow, I didn't realize how bad this character was" but now it's just for the attention.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 01:20 am (UTC)
I don't know about him winning, but I do think it would have been closer than the race wound up being.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 01:23 am (UTC)
What it came down to with a lot of people was which VP candidate they had more faith in, and I think Rice would have inspired more faith than Biden, as opposed to the veritable black hole of faith that Palin was. In addition to her own merits, she also likely would have done what palin was supposed to do, which was attract Clinton supporters.

Ugh, so agreed on Palin. I don't know how anyone can be a self-respecting Republican and support her. I mean, c'mon, GOP. Hasn't your party suffered enough already? Why would you dig yourself into a deeper hole?

I know. They need to be doing what the Democrats where doing four years ago, revamp their party a bit, and find charismatic people with experience and brains to run. Or, you know, not and let their against-just-about-everything-I-hold-dear party die away.

I think I'd feel bad for the fans/find him unprofessional for it if it was... well, almost anything other than Twilight.

Yeah, I struggle with that too. When he was just kind of loling at the publicity and the fans, I was giggling along, but the last comment... that was something you say to your friends who are not going to gossip to the press, not the press itself.

What has Kristin said? Because so far all I've heard are quotes from Robert.

Oh, kids. They are just so adorable.
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 06:32 am (UTC)
Also, the actor who played Emmet and... Rosaline? The blonde, anyway, where incredibly adorable together.
Friday, November 14th, 2008 11:17 pm (UTC)
Since everyone else has covered all the good Palin points...I shall play devil's advocate with the only good argument I can make to this.

We should TOTALLY let Palin run for President in four years. Think of all the hilarious SNL sketches Tina Fey can do!
Friday, November 14th, 2008 11:47 pm (UTC)
I don't watch SNL. But the thought that she would most likely lose is kinda encouraging.
Friday, November 14th, 2008 11:50 pm (UTC)
Unless something happens in four years to completely screw up the country, Palin against Obama? She'd lose so badly her descendents would feel the sting of failure.

Saturday, November 15th, 2008 12:10 am (UTC)
Exactly. ^_^
