Guess what?

The new library I now use, up where I go to school, charges people for interlibrary loans.

That's right, boys and girls, they charge you for the fracking books! Isn't the library supposed to be free? What is wrong with them?

The worst part is, I hit the point where the Saiyuki manga becomes awesome, and now I'm willing to pay 3 bucks to find out what happens next.

That...that really sucks. I'm sorry the library there is doing that. Is that the city or the university library?

It's the city library.

The good thing is I found the manga used for the same price they're charging me to rent it, and since I have a couple amazon.com gift certificates, so I'm just going to buy it.

Then I will have the manga-prettiness to look at anytime I want....

Hmm. That's pretty unusual for them to charge for ILL books. Of course, public libraries are even more strapped for cash than academic ones...they probably have to charge to cover the cost of shipping. Given my knowledge of library funding (or rather, the lack thereof), I can at least tell you I'm pretty sure they're not making any profits off of your $3 per ILL request.

And btw, did you ever find those books you lost?

I know it's because of the lack of money; they flat out told me that it's because of a lack of money.

One the one hand, it's not too bad because I can either wait until I'm back at home with the library that doesn't charge for ILL or buy it used. While it's inconvient for me personally, I'm really bothered by the implications for the people who don't have a lot of money; 3 bucks a pop can add up really fast.

Yes, I did, thanks for asking. I must have left them at the library, because when I called them, those books weren't on my record, which means they were either never checked out or (more likely) I checked them out and left them there and they go checked back in.

Ah. Well, that does really suck concerning the ILL stuff. But I'm glad you found the lost books, at least.

Me too.
