Secret Post 833:

120: I don't care what you ship, but Katara is not anyone's girl. She's her own person with her own arc. She's certainly not a fucking prize to be handed off to some boy and the fact that she was treated as such is a massive flaw in the finale. (And oh, if I may be bitchy? What does it say about your pairing that it makes more sense for her to fight next to the character who supported her through some of her best character development and NOT the child you'd like to pair her with?)

In the words of secret 111: I love this ship.

114: this secret is totally made of word, only I found it funny and was not sick and betrayed by the latest chapter.

113: Wow, massive humanity fail.

154: I bet you fifty buck somone is writing Jacuzzi/Nice porn, and I want to read it.

Re:120 That is a hateful secret, but the picture it's on is so pretty! I need to find it without the stupid text now.

I know, it was a very nice piece of art to use.

Something's in the water. Two of my fandoms (Avatar and Inuyasha) seem to have had breakouts this week.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 05:56 pm (UTC)
What is going down with Inuyasha?
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
Writing community wank. Fired mods, un-affiliating. That sort of thing. Not involved in it myself but watching it play out on the f-list.

Proof that even when shipping isn't an issue, there is always something to fight about in fandom! ;)
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 08:57 pm (UTC)
Writing comms have wank? My god. Let me know when the summery of this all goes up on fandom wank.

re: humanity fail

Did you mean 113 or 133? Because I don't even recognize 113.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 05:58 pm (UTC)
I did mean 133. *blushes*

114: I don't care if it IS the most quoted line from that movie, I still heart the Monty Python reference.
Monday, April 20th, 2009 08:41 am (UTC)
It's classic for a reason.

ETA: I deleted my rant because it really wasn't on-topic to your post, and was pretty long. Plus, it's kinda rude to rant on other people's personal LJs. *sheepish*
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 06:07 pm (UTC)
Oh, no! I thought that was a really valid and reasonable rant! I had thoughts about it! Do you want me to forward the email alerts so you can repost/post on your lj without having to type it all up?
Sunday, April 19th, 2009 02:03 am (UTC)
I already reposted it, but thanks anyway! And if it takes me a while to respond to your reply to it, don't think i'm ignoring you; sometimes I post rants, then feel sheepish about ranting later (even if I still believe it) and want to pretend that post doesn't exist, or I avoid responding. It's an avoidance thing I have. >D I try to avoid my avoidances.

Anyway, I'm glad it wasn't too scary, then. I know you're generally receptive to ranting, but when I went back to read it, I thought that since it wasn't even what you were talking about, it was kinda iffy on the appropriateness thing. But I'm glad you responded!
Monday, April 20th, 2009 01:57 am (UTC)
You're welcome! And no worries about the long lag time - I'm pretty tardy on responses at the moment myself.

No, you really, really don't.
Monday, April 20th, 2009 08:58 am (UTC)
You know, I have to admit I've been guilty of pulling the 'deserves' line. More as he/she DOESN'T deserve her/him, but still. And I will often to that with girls (i.e. Hinata deserves whatever she wants, even if that's Naruto) which... honestly, it just as bad.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 05:26 pm (UTC)
Ugh, shippers like that disgust me. If their ship's ~so strong~ and ours is so anti-canon, why should they even CARE if she helps Zuko? Fail.

Also:

Exactly!

114 - I sympathize with the Ishida bit.

But seriously? Does no one see Orihime's change toward Ulquiorra but myself? She never hated him from the beginning; she trusted him, more than any of the other arrancar. :/ Her reaching out to him in this last chapter was not "character rape".
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 09:02 pm (UTC)
I agree, I wasn't bothered by the Ulquiorra/Orihime interaction. Orihime's such a sweetheart, and the guy's about to die, it's not like she's going to be all like "Screw you, evil bat asshole, I spit on your grave!" This is the girl who heals her enemies without being asked.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 09:32 pm (UTC)
It wasn't Orihime's actions towards Ulquiorra that struck me as insanely ooc, but her utter non-action through this arc and the latest chapters. NOT healing Ishida, asking Ichigo's CORPSE to save her. It's a far, far cry from the girl who stood up against Hollows and wouldn't let people hurt her friends. The character rape is in how Orihime has been downgraded from someone who would go into Soul Society to save her friends and was pleading with Ishida to let her fight and got trained by Rukia and then just stood idly by.

120: fgsfds that secret is dumb because a) Zuko and Katara bonding and fighting together made a huge amount of sense given that the thrust of their shared character arc was about reconciliation, b) IMO Aang needed to face the Fire Lord alone blah blah destiny blah blah, c) on what planet would Mike and Bryan of all people pander to the Zutarians, and d) GET OUT OF MY EX-FANDOM. :( Why are 90% of the shippers in that fandom clinically stupid? I feel like it is a higher percentage that in most fandoms.

114: I just felt like I wanted to stab KT in the face a lot for being such an awful writer.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
a.) It totally did. Bitching about that would be like a George shipper bitching about Toph and Sokka being friends. First, not every single relationship is going to be romance. Secondly, if friends are THAT threatening to your relationship... You're Edward Cullen.

b.) I'm not going to go into my problems with Aang facing Ozai, but if Katara had been there and doing nothing I would have been even more filled with rage than I was at the time.

c.) on what planet would Mike and Bryan of all people pander to the Zutarians I WANT TO LIVE ON THAT PLANET. Seriously, though, while Bryke did have a good attitude about shipping earlier on, I think they got a bit vindictive by the end of the show (and I'm not talking about thing like who ended up with who.)

Why are 90% of the shippers in that fandom clinically stupid? I feel like it is a higher percentage that in most fandoms.

I don't think that's true at all. I just like that like HP, there are a slightly higher percentage of REALLY VOCAL fanbrats, and since it's a big fandom, it feels like there's more stupid in general. Because honestly, how often to you hear about the sane shippers who just write/draw/squee over their pairing? Unless you're into that ship as well, you don't.

114: I just felt like I wanted to stab KT in the face a lot for being such an awful writer.

Same.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 09:56 pm (UTC)
a) It's that fannish insecurity that made me dislike the vocal majority of my fellow Kataang shippers. >:/ If your ship is canon, you should not feel so damned threatened by poor ol' Zuko.

b) I was actually fearing that Katara, being so protective of Aang as she is, would end up taking a bullet for Aang and dying due to Aang's indecisiveness/moral quandary, and that... would have been much much worse.

c) True, though I really doubt that all the Katara/Zuko interaction in the finale was just a massive shiptease.
Saturday, April 18th, 2009 10:01 pm (UTC)
a.) *nods* it's like, if there was really a war going on, I think you won.

b.) I was actually fearing that Katara, being so protective of Aang as she is, would end up taking a bullet for Aang and dying due to Aang's indecisiveness/moral quandary, and that... would have been much much worse. Oh, god that would have been awful! Although also way, way to believable and dark for Avatar. honestly, I'd like to see someone do that in a fic (personally, I really don't feel that Aang sacrificed/lost enough in the show, which was part of my problems with the finale).

c.) True, though I really doubt that all the Katara/Zuko interaction in the finale was just a massive shiptease. Oh, it wasn't at all! It was exactly what I was hoping for and what has always been true with Katara/Zuko scenes - it was two people who think they are more different than they actually are just... interacting. It was really organic to the characters and the show, which is why (imho) the Katara and Zuko fight against Azula was the best part of the finale.

"Secondly, if friends are THAT threatening to your relationship... You're Edward Cullen."

Bah hah hah. That's awesome.

120: The "retarded" thing gets to me. I'm 90% certain that it wouldn't be phrased that way if all the ship wank hadn't started in the first place, but really? It's like that FedEx arrow thing: some people see the subtext, some people don't, but if you don't see the subtext it doesn't mean it's not there, and if you do see the subtext it doesn't mean you're smarter or a more perceptive person. Not everyone sees things the same way, and that's perfectly fine. That is the way of literary analysis. Get the fuck over it. Jesus!

But no. For all the intelligent, well-read, analytical people who ship Zuko/Katara, and for all well-written, interesting, true-to-character fanfiction the ship has, CLEARLY WE ARE ALL RETARDED. Well, at least NOW WE KNOW, because this one person has decided that for us.

And I have another objection to that secret: Katara was supposed to go with Aang, AND DO WHAT, EXACTLY? There's nothing she could have done, because she can't fly. So... she was supposed to be sitting on the sideline. Supporting her man. Like a good woman should. Has this person been paying attention to Katara's character arc at all?

But no, we're the retarded ones, apparently.

If the ship is threatened by her being with another man during the finale, then it's not as strong as it should be.

Exactly. I mean, there are some pairings that I just cannot see the subtext for and that I totally do not think can be in character, that does not mean ANYTHING AT ALL about the people who DO ship it.

I feel so grateful, don't you?

o... she was supposed to be sitting on the sideline. Supporting her man. Like a good woman should. Has this person been paying attention to Katara's character arc at all?

yeah, apparently Avatar was supposed to be a crappy shonen written by the cursed love-child of KT and Kishimoto.

If the ship is threatened by her being with another man during the finale, then it's not as strong as it should be.

Especially since her ship ONLY ENDED UP TOGETHER in the end. I don't buy that cann>fanon crap, but sweet jesus, enjoy the scenes of them kissing, you know? God knows if the situation was reversed I would be.

I can usually be persuaded to see the validity of a pairing, but then again there are somethings I just don't see. But you're absolutely right, it has NOTHING to do with the people who like the ship.

I feel so grateful, don't you?

Oh, definitely. I was having a crisis about this very thing, but now that I know, I can move on with my life! I love it when people decide these kinds of things for me!

yeah, apparently Avatar was supposed to be a crappy shonen written by the cursed love-child of KT and Kishimoto.

Oh God oh God ohGodohGod. For all my issues with the finale, thank the good lord it wasn't that.

Same. And then I was have that one or two pairings where I am just like - no. World of no.

Oh God oh God ohGodohGod. For all my issues with the finale, thank the good lord it wasn't that.

Yeah, I love it when people tear down good shows and try to make them bad shows- like attempting to argue that Soul Eater is more sexist than Naruto. (Let me explain all the ways that doesn't work, sweetheart.)

Ffff I've read a total of three chapters of the manga and even I know that's not true.

Yes, but you subscribe to earth logic.

In response to the Ulquiorra thing, I was not angry and betrayed by their whole exchange; I was pissed off out of my mind because:

a.) Orihime's characterization was not done for shit in the past hundred chapters,

b.) Kubo did not set up their relationship properly from Ulquiorra's side at all, giving his little proclamation a feel of "OHAI I JUST PULLED THIS OUT OF MY BUTT," and

c.) it frustrates me that if Kubo had done it right, it would have been beautiful and I would be happy instead of just confused and frustrated.

Wasted potential bothers me so much more than something that never could have been good in the first place. Example: I don't get pissed at Vampire Knight for sucking a lot, because I never expected it to do much more, and in fact am amused by its general silly fail. Bleach, on the other hand, started off so wonderfully, and is dying before my eyes, and it makes. me. so. fracking. pissed.

Sorry for the rant; I started to drift way off-topic there.
Monday, April 20th, 2009 02:09 am (UTC)
a.) Orihime's characterization was not done for shit in the past hundred chapters,

Agreed. At this point, I hate everything she'd doing and will until she proves that she has a spine again.

b.) Kubo did not set up their relationship properly from Ulquiorra's side at all, giving his little proclamation a feel of "OHAI I JUST PULLED THIS OUT OF MY BUTT," and

I actually disagree about this - there has been little touches that show that he's interested in her, so that honestly worked for me. It's just surrounded by so much other fail that it sucks by proxy.

Never apologize for rants in my lj.
