Fandom secret 841:

122: Right, because dropping the character with the most and most realistic character development is a good idea. As for his skill at bending? And fuck you for taking a shot at his bending. It's called working for your skills, instead of getting them god-modded to you.

159: You're still waiting to find a female character that you like because you have problems with women. YOU have problems with women. Try therapy and then talk to me. Because, I'm sorry, if in a group of women with such diverse personalities as Katara, Dax, Mulan, Buffy, and Orihime you can't like even one of them? You have epic fucking problems.

Oh lordy, why did I look? Storm and Ripley and Uhura and Chihiro and Xena and Toph and Luna and Nausicaä and Éowyn? Yeah, somebody needs a shrink, yesterday.

(Speaking of awesome girls who don't deserve to be dissed by self-hating fanbrats like that, I must squee -- my Iplehouse girl has finally shipped from Korea, and has already landed in the US -- she's in the Customs queue at JFK right now, so she should FINALLY be in my hands sometime next week! Dolly-sized Katara cosplay, here we come! *bounces*)

There will be of course be a massive flood of pictures, as promised earlier. ;) For a little perspective, I've taken all of these (http://www.flickr.com/photos/smillaaraq/sets/72157616656542896/) of my bossy little kitsune goddess Ammy-chan just over the course of this last month, and she was an unplanned impulse purchase from a domestic seller so she arrived with *nothing* on hand but her naked dolly self, so that's all stuff I've whipped up and hunted down on the fly over the last couple of weeks. Pualani, OTOH, since I've been waiting so long on them putting her together, I've already got two sets of undies, three outfits, and a spare wig on hand waiting for her arrival (not to mention the spare red eyes for her girly!Gojyo cosplay...still hunting for a perfect wig, alas). AND she's shipping along with a two more spare wigs and sets of eyes and a lacy slip, on top of the whole crazy ballerina getup from the fullset. So even before I get started on the cosplay, I'm going to be snapping photos until my poor camera explodes. XD

Arrrrrrrrgh -- freakin' EMS tracking! They made me think she was still sitting in JFK waiting to pass through Customs instead of already en route to VA, so I was out this afternoon when the mailman tried to deliver her. So talk about maddening -- she's locked up overnight in a Post Office that's THREE BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE. *headdesks*

I think I'm gonna have a very very early breakfast at the diner next to the P.O., and freakin' TACKLE whatever poor schlub unlocks the door when they open for the day...

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, that must be SO frustrating.

And at least you get a nice excuse for a good, greasy diner breakfast.

rarrr

[identity profile] keirelle.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I'm so glad it wasn't just me hating on those secrets. Leaving Zuko out of Avatar makes for no story (sorry, but The Aang Show doesn't sound all that cool), and hating girls is just stupid, thanks very much.

Re: rarrr

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you were certainly not the only one.

As for taking Zuko out - yeah, because taking away the main antagonist for half of the show is a good idea. Sheesh.

[identity profile] rabidline.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
122: Avatar-related troll secrets seem to be a trend these last couple of days. 'LOL Zuko is useless because he's not good at bending and messes up Perfect Ship Kataang'. Start watching the show with your eyes, not your butt, OP. This show is called Avatar: The Last Airbender, not Aang and Katara's Happy Jolly Show of Butterflies and Awkward Romances.

*sighs* I have to say, the secret gave the 'Katara is Aang's girl, not Zuko's' a good run for the money, though.

159: Agreed.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)

Didn't it? Aren't you glad that Spring has brought all the troll/fanbrats out of the woodwork?

It almost made even the rather-batshit-zutarians sound sane. Ah, spring! That's why they're popping out! It's like daisies, I tell you!

I'd just lose to behead a couple for a nice bouquet.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
And if you want to blame someone for Aang/Katara not getting enough attention, blame Bryke. Blame Bryke for not making the ship more APPEALING to their audience, not a character you don't like.

What frustrates me is how unsatisfied a lot of Katara/Aang fans are. Now, I totally understand not being happy with the ending (lord knows I wasn't) but as a pairing, Katara and Aang got an INSANE amount of screen time. Like, more than just about every single pairing (including the canon ones) that I ship. Way to cry more.

[identity profile] tobu-ishi.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* I do like Aang. I have nothing against him and my handful of issues with his arc are the fault of lazy writing, not the character himself. But you don't make a good series by obsessing over just the main character. Supporting characters, especially antiheroes, can be downright fascinating, even run away with a fandom (see: Wolverine)...

And if you must complain about Zuko, word your complaint more skillfully so it'll be less obvious you're just butthurt about people liking Zutara. >.>

Srsly. I shipped and still ship EdWin as one of my dearest OTPs, but while I may eyeroll from time to time about the difficulty of finding good doujin for them in the flood of yaoi, I deal with it by sticking to the comms I know produce good work and getting over myself. I have never once suggested Roy Mustang or (God help us) Alphonse be written out. They are good characters and what the fandom makes of them does not affect their incredible value to the plot! That's just fan-daft in the worst way. -_-

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
See, through most of the series Aang was just Not My Type Of Character. And then the end of the series happened, and I just HATED him.

But you don't make a good series by obsessing over just the main character. Supporting characters, especially antiheroes, can be downright fascinating, even run away with a fandom (see: Wolverine)...

Yep. And that way you broaden audience appeal, when there's something that just about everyone can enjoy.

They are good characters and what the fandom makes of them does not affect their incredible value to the plot! That's just fan-daft in the worst way. -_-

Word.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell?! There's no way you could have Avatar without Zuko. There's so many reasons for this. But at a very, very basic level of storytelling, Zuko is an antagonist for part of the series, and the antagonist is a main character. Honestly, you take out any of the main characters and the story is going to fall apart.

There are a bunch of other reasons why the secret is made of fail, but the other commenters hit it pretty well, so I'll leave it at that and agree with them. However? That is a gorgeous picture of Zuko. What's with these secrets made of fail on artwork made of win?

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
...also? Saying that Zuko isn't the best at bending also feels like a shot against Sokka. Sokka can't bend at all and he also had to work hard to get his skills where he could pull his weight.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
True.

I don't know, I just feel that it so epically misses the point how 1.) how good Zuko actually is, even in the beginning 2.) and how a whole part of his character is that he works for his skills, sometimes epically harder than everyone else does.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
But at a very, very basic level of storytelling, Zuko is an antagonist for part of the series, and the antagonist is a main character.

Yep, I almost ranted about this in my post. It's like, if Zuko wasn't there, why would they have doing during season one? Why would we have cared when Azula showwed up?

However? That is a gorgeous picture of Zuko. What's with these secrets made of fail on artwork made of win?

I don't know, but I want that pic.

122: Pfffft try learning a little bit about the literary "hero" archetype and the hero's journey and then come and tell me Zuko doesn't fit that role better than Aang, OP.

But it's almost not worth getting worked up about it because trolly secret is so trolly the OP probably lives under a bridge.

159: Yeah, seriously, the problem is not in the characters. Notice how there's one common factor in all of your response to and relationship with these characters? It's you, OP.

You and your hatred of vaginas.

You are wise.

[identity profile] ryanitenebrae.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Okayyy. . .not dignifying #122 with a response, as I really think that has to be a troll. It's too outrageous of a statement, focused on the narrative, and aimed at something that seems designed to upset the majority of the fandom.

#159, though, is very slightly apologetic and self-aware, so it probably isn't a troll, I guess, though I'd feel better if it were, because. . .gender is not a character type. There are female characters of every personality, shape, and size just as there are male characters, and the only times I see people focusing exclusively on one and not the other are usually issues of attraction, not genuine love of those characters.

Also, Mulan is on that thing. Who doesn't like Mulan? (A bit biased, but still.)

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, clearly 159 is someone who hates characters with a vagina, full stop.

I have no idea how doesn't like Mulan!

[identity profile] ryanitenebrae.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, Chihiro! Chihiro.

Like I said, they seem apologetic, though, not angry. I don't really understand them, or why they would have such a problem, though. Many of the characters depicted are three-dimensional characters, and I like many of them for the same reasons that I'd like them for if they were male, so . . .it's sort of just "huh?" to me.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
They have a problem because clearly they have a problem with women, full stop.

159 is full of FAIL

[identity profile] goldengrimoire.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No comment on 122 cause I uh...haven't watched Avatar (I should, shouldn't I?) >_>

159: OK, I guess I can see not liking Luna, Wonder Woman, Storm, Eowyn, (even if I love them) but NAUSICAA? If you can't see why Nausicaa then you have some gender issues, anon. D:

Nausicaa was one of my childhood heroines so I can't wrap my head around the idea of not liking her (Kushana is also awesome.)

Re: 159 is full of FAIL

[identity profile] goldengrimoire.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
er, why Nausicaa is awesome, that is. :)

Re: 159 is full of FAIL

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You should.

The world-building is amazing, it has strong females of many different types, the best redemption arc I've ever watched, and amazing fight scenes.

The fandom is batship insane, but it's huge, which means there's a lot of good fic and art.

Nausicaa was one of my childhood heroines so I can't wrap my head around the idea of not liking her

There are a couple characters like that in that secret for me.

[identity profile] the-sun-is-up.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
122: The funny thing about that one is that there are a bunch of Maiko/Kataang shippers on my flist who I know would also flip their shit at that secret because they also love Zuko and think he's awesome. SORRY, SECRET-MAKER, NO ONE AGREES WITH YOU. :|

159: I'm tempted to call troll on that one. Also, whyyy is paperclipchains in that thread? *reaches for the aspirin*

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
SORRY, SECRET-MAKER, NO ONE AGREES WITH YOU. :|

BECAUSE YOU'RE JUST THAT WRONG.

And paperclipchains? Do I even want to know?

[identity profile] the-sun-is-up.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Paperclipchains is someone who I'd classify a professional wanker. As in, s/h/it wanks so frequently and so persistently that I can't fathom how s/h/it has time to eat/sleep/hold down a job, and I therefore wonder if perhaps someone somewhere is actually paying her by the word to wank up a storm on a regular basis. It would explain a lot.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes it would.

*just read the thread*

Oh, internet.

[identity profile] misora.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. Seriously, that is the wankiest wanker to ever have wanked. :/

Oh God this is exactly how I feel. They're so contrary! About fucking everything! And then when someone does the same thing back, they get all huffy about it. Oy.

[identity profile] the-sun-is-up.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, they're arguing about whether you should pity a sexist person or be angry at them. And they're arguing about it for endless condensed thread after thread after thread. FGSFDS WHO EVEN GIVES A SHIT?!1!

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-27 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
*rolls eyes8

[identity profile] cherryfruit.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Paperclipchains is insane. I'm honestly starting to believe this. It's the only explanation.

I've seen them wank a million times, but off the top of my head I couldn't name a single one of their views besides "whatever gives me an excuse to pick a fight". When I saw them there, I thought "Isn't PCC a feminist? Will I (gasp!) not want to punch them for everything they say this time?" Nope! Guess not!

[identity profile] misora.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: 159 -- I know, I couldn't believe that secret when I read it. I can understand not liking a few of them, but all of them? Each of them have different personalities, and... argh.

Funny, I don't even get angry at the retarded Avatar secrets that pop up on f!s anymore. I guess maybe it's a sign I've officially moved on from the fandom. .____.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-28 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
That is a good sign. It shows great promise for your future zen-like state of happiness.

[identity profile] hieronymousb.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Zuko is awesome, gtfo.

2. WTF? This is just a sign that the secret maker is looking at the world from some skewed perspective where women are Other. It's clearly not a personality issue, because that's a wide variety of women the secret maker is trashing there. It's clearly just seeing women as somehow Different. Disturbing.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-28 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
And DIAF while you're at it.

[identity profile] cherryfruit.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Kataang is so strong and never wavers, but Zuko needs to not exist because he distracts from it? Riiiight. Stupid fanthing.

I think my least favorite part about the second one is that it led the sexism apologists out of the woodwork. "Just because they hate every single kind of woman just for being a woman doesn't mean they're a misogynist!" O rly? Then what's your definition of it?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Kataang is so strong and never wavers, but Zuko needs to not exist because he distracts from it? Riiiight. Stupid fanthing.

You know, how defensive some Katara/Aang shippers are really makes me feel better about shipping Zutara. It's like, really now? You have the series-long canon pairing and you're THIS NEUROTIC about any threat to your pairing? Really?

I think my least favorite part about the second one is that it led the sexism apologists out of the woodwork. "Just because they hate every single kind of woman just for being a woman doesn't mean they're a misogynist!" O rly? Then what's your definition of it?

Exactly. I mean, I'm sure that it sucks for her that she's so misogynistic and I think it says sad things about her self-imagine, but sugar-coating or denying the truth isn't going to do a damn thing to help her.

[identity profile] cherryfruit.livejournal.com 2009-04-26 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? Honestly, I was shocked they even acknowledged our existances at first. If Zutara is such a big ol' crack pairing, then why do you even care?

Right. Attacking people for acknowledging it is even worse. Because everyone knows misogynism goes away as soon as you pretend it doesn't exist and treat people who hate women as delicate flowers who deserve a cookie and a pat on the back for their bravery, amirite?

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2009-04-28 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
