Code Name Verity.

BRB, sobbing. Oh, Julie. Oh, Maddie. Oh, my fierce WWII ladies. You are both amazing.

Halfway through the novel I knew, I just knew, that somehow Verity's perceived acquiescence was false, just from the things admitted too, the biting and telling the poor Resistance girl to lie, but oh, I did not realize the depths of her brilliant spy craft. At some point I will buy and reread this book, and I am sure, find that the author has played fair with the unreliable narrator.

And the friendship between her and Maddie and Maddie's relationship with her brother and oh, neverland.

Also, can I take a beat to mention Verity's relationship with her interrogator? Because that was fucking amazing. I was holding my breath during that scene where she gets him to tell her his daughters name.

For a brief moment, I actually thought both heroines were going to make it out alive and Maddie was going to marry Verity's brother and they would live happily together in Verity's castle and I was like, 'I guess the happy ending is why it's YA but I don't care how unrealistic a happy ending would be because I just want these ladies happy.' BUT NO. NO, MY HEART WAS TO BE BRUTALLY CRUSHED IN MY CHEST.

It's impressive that a month after I read the book for the first time, I see the title in your post and immediately have an emotional break down.

I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT. I have this weird fear of people not liking it, BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING and UGH, OMG.

I can understand not liking it, simply because it is so brutal emotionally, but I can't understand not, at the least, appreciating it for how AMAZING it is.

One of the girls in my book review circle was all "It's a journal and she doesn't make any sense and I hate journals!" and I was all "OH GOD JUST HANG ON!" and even though she doesn't know me that well, she did, and she ended up liking it more than she expected, but...it was weird.

I am glad she stuck with it! And Verity is so well-written I have a hard time understanding someone being THAT bothered by it being a journal, even though I DO understand the frustration - there was a time I got super-burned out with journal narratives - I read a whole bunch in a row and I started to see the way authors would cheat with their writing.
