I realize that technically, there is only two hours left of Galetine's day, but still!

Shout-out to all my fierce lady friends! (If I have any dudes on my flist, shout-out to you too!)

Please take this as an invitation to come talk to me about ladies.

(Let’s be real, you are welcome to come talk to me about ladies 365 days of the year.)

[livejournal.com profile] seren_ccd asked me: what was the first piece of media that you remember really making an impression? (film, tv show, books, art, music, anything!)

That would probably be Tamora Pierce’s Alanna: The First Adventure. I remember reading that story and going ‘yes, this is, this is.’ Girl-centric fantasy about a becoming a knight? 100% right up my alley.

This Wednesday's Black Widow and Hawkeye were so epic and perfect and amazing that there really is nothing left for me to say.

[livejournal.com profile] qualapec loaned me Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld (WWI alt-history/sci-fi/steampunk with a handsome prince and a cross-dressing-for-adventure "midshipman" PLUS a badass lady scientist), which I ended up reading in one day and then ordering the entire series from amazon.

Oh! Also this has adorable illustrations. On the copy I got, the hero looks fabulously dapper and devil may care on the cover (I originally thought he was the heroine) and the heroine is 100% rocking my platonic ideal of a masculine haircut. Oh, and did I mention the part whereRead more... )Also, by the way, while the hero is very useful and has one or two Big Damn Hero moments, the heroine gets ALL the best moments of badassery. ALL OF THE BEST MOMENTS OF BADASSERY BY A FACTOR OF 500.

  • I have once again continued my horrible habit of doing real-life financial book-keeping late at night on Sundays. I should know better but I clearly don't.

  • I had an impromptu coffee date with [livejournal.com profile] qualapec this afternoon, which was a blast, and resulted in:

  • I erased my amazon wishlist. It had been how I'd been keeping track of books, and I had books on there that I hadn't read in the TEN YEARS they had been on my wishlist, so. Two clicks, and it was gone. I saved the most recent books, but other than that, it's all deleted. I also culled a few of my physical to-read books.

  • [livejournal.com profile] qualapec and I realized that if Steve's plan goes down in 1944, depending on which month you place that, you have AT LEAST four months to a year and change in which PEGGY CARTER COULD BE LEADING THE HOWLING COMMANDOS AROUND THE EUROPEAN THEATER. God, I cannot express how much I want that. Like, I can just see Peggy coming out of that radio tower (she probably fixed her mascara before hand) so she looks both devastated and perfect and the Commandos (who have, iirc, lost their two highest ranking soldiers) are like, "what now, ma'am?" and Agent Peggy Carter says, "Now we go win the war, gentlemen."

[livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 asked me about Black Canary and I had enough to say about Dinah Lance (comics verse) that I decided to make this a post of its own.

Things I love about DC comics’ Black Canary a.k.a Dinah Lance:

  • I love that she’s a well-known female superhero who’s well-known for her role on an all-ladies superhero team – not because she’s Green Arrow’s love interest.

  • I love that she’s one of the top hand-to-hand fighters in the DC universe.*

  • I love that her code name is feminine without being explicitly female (e.g. Lady Shiva, Batgirl, etc).

  • I love that she’s a female legacy hero who did not take her name from a male figure; Dinah took up the mantle and was inspired by her mother.

*In general, I find it delightful that the top martial artists in the DC verse are all ladies: you have Lady Shiva, who was THE BEST martial artist (dying at her hands will bring honor to your family in several countries) who thought Dinah had enough promise that Lady Shiva wanted to train Dinah, and Lady Shiva was eventually defeated by her daughter, Cassandra Cain (future Batman).

Stephanie Brown will exist in the New 52.

I don't even know how to process this news. Gabzilla's tags pretty much sum up my feelings.

Also, DC.... you wanna tell me where Cassandra Cain is?

BUT ALSO, BLACK WIDOW GETS A SOLO TITLE.

I read Huntress: Year One, and loved it. Oh, Helena, struggling with the sexism of language and faith. Oh, Helena, killing people. I am typically very, very critical of faith in fiction, but I feel like (despite a few moments I could have done without) Huntress: Year One had an excellently nuanced look at faith,Read more... ).

I came across a meme on tumblr, which asked you to list your favorite characters from least cynical to most. And then I ended up having to retype the whole effing thing about three different times. So here it is, finally:

Male Characters:

Zuko> Han Solo > Clint Barton > Mal Reynolds > Jack Bristow

Female Characters:

Kate Bishop > Cameron > Faith Lehane > Natasha Romanoff > Adelle deWitt

I really liked thinking about this question ‘who is more cynical?’ but it actually wound up being way too easy.

The men are a slow, consistent slide from heart-of-gold dude with a shell of cynicism and anger to heart-of-gold-dude with a MUCH THICKER shell of cynicism and anger.

The female characters were pretty evenly divided between an optimist (Katie-Kate) and my violence, morally compromised ladies (Faith, Natasha, Adelle) right at Cameron, who I would argue is neither cynical nor optimistic.

“Everything about my heart is a crime scene.
I drink to forget things it takes me 2 beers to name.
I pour my breath into things only worth forgetting.
I have nothing left to say to the ghosts.
Their cold hands and bitter mouths keep kissing me awake
when I have asked them nicely and then not-so-nicely
to be left alone.
I have nothing left to say to the ghosts.
Two decades full of nothing but monsters and crime scenes
and sometimes I am the monster and sometimes
I am the crime scene. There is nothing I would undo
so much as things I wish would wake up forgotten.”

One thing that teen wolf did really right in season three was selling Allison and Lydia's relationship.
