We Are The Only Love Gods

Trailer for Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing:

(Also, did LJ manage to make the posting interface EVEN WORSE when I wasn't looking?

So I heard about this, but I didn't picture... this.

I don't know crap about Shakespeare beyond the high school trinity of R&J, Hamlet and MacBeth, so I feel like a lot of this movie would pretty much be lost on me. At the same time...

I...don't get it. Why is it in black and white? And all..Gatsby-ish? Not complaining, just confused.

Because Joss Whedon would be my guess...

There was a fan convention (or something like that) with the whole cast present, and Joss explained that it's filmed in black and white because the whole thing was done on a budget, and they just didn't have the resources to muck around with special effects. What it comes down to is problems with the lighting, and trying to get scenes to match up when they only had a limited time frame to work in. If they'd filmed in colour, they would have had to match up the lighting digitally, otherwise the colour contrast would have been off and it would have looked ridiculous.

This way, they were able to circumvent such technical issues and the film noir aesthetic helps develop the ambience they were going for.

Ahhh. That is actually really clever.

Oh, that is so cool! I love hearing how factors like budget and the tech available influence how something is made (and usually having those limitations can make a narrative better).

Much Ado About Nothing is one of my very favourite things of anything ever but I am... not feeling this. I wasn't feeling it when I heard about the casting, and the clips haven't convinced me either. The Shakespearean dialogue sounds unnatural and I'm not getting the spark Beatrice and Benedick should have from Acker and Denisoff. Honestly, he's past his prime attractiveness-wise but I could much more easily see Nathan Fillion as a Benedick

The Shakespearean dialogue sounds unnatural

I agree about this, but I wasn't sure if that was the movie, or the fact that it takes me, at least, a couple minutes to get into the rhythm and the style of shakespeare.

And I'm completely on the opposite site of the fence regarding the casting of Fillion (who I think will be perfect as the comedic cop character) and Denisoff.

I didn't realise Much Ado was by Whedon! Yay. <3

I am moderately excited about this. The banter between Beatrice and Benedick sounds alright, really clever as it should. The words flashing (sex, deceit etc.) seems oddly out of place. I mean, I suppose all that is in there, but still. I'll be interested to see what mood he was aiming for with that. Another Shakespeare being re-introduced to pop culture is never a bad thing!

Nope! And I think Much Ado About Nothing, in particular, is really accessible to a modern audience.

Not sold on the trailer but anything with:

1) Much Ado About Nothing

2) Joss Whedon

Is worth checking out. :3

I WANT THIS SOOOOOOO MUCH

(I'm going to miss it in Austin this weekend by hours. HOURS.)

I am excited by pretty much anyone doing MAAN but I am even more excited by this cast. :DD

So, I have been waiting for this for ages, but never seen the trailer. There is no way I am not watching this given that it is A) Much Ado About Nothing, and B) Joss Whedon. (The first pretty much guarantees I will watch it) and also has Nathan Fillion in it.

That said, I agree with people that the dialogue sounds a bit stilted. Although, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and blame that on the fact that it's a trailer. And hey, Reed Diamond was quite good.

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2013-03-10 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Reed Diamond was AMAZING. And since it takes me, personally, about five minutes to get into the Shakespear grove, I have a feeling that the language will be much, much smoother in the actual movie.
