I had a very successful if exhausting shopping trip ...technically yesterday. It involved a lot of driving and very little sleep but I got an awesome new phone and the Apple store managed to fix my computer in under a day AND compted the repair because I had a long wait while at the store to pick it up.

And then I came home to a new episode of Justified!

So, the combination of reading Side Jobs while my mom is reading Dragon Bones made me realize another one of my bulletproof kinks: people who are LEGITIMATELY* afraid of what they're capable of and struggle with where their moral lines are.

Examples would be: Harry  Dresden; Ward of Hurog; Alexandra Udinov, daughter of Nikolai Udinov (BANG. BANG.) (I'm on the fence about The Doctor.)

What do you think of this trope? Who are your favorite characters who embody it? Tell me in the comments.

*By which I mean, it's not just that these characters have moral qualms but have to actively safeguard themselves against being as bad as the people they're fighting. So I would argue that Sarah Coner wouldn't apply but Raylan Givens is SO MUCH THIS. And yes, I have noticed that it is a VERY male-dominated trope.

This is a FABULOUS interview with Joelle Carter (who plays Ava Crowder on Justified). I can tell that she adores Ava as much as I do and loves the show she's working on, and I found her answers really, really interesting – especially in regards to the question of whether or not Ava's killing of her husband was justified.

Also, I have to recommend Bad Apple Blues, which is a basically gen fanfic (slight Raylan/Winona towards the end). It's basically a hilarious day in the life of the marshals, in which Rachel is cool as a cucumber, Raylan is beleaguered, and Winona is a clever and level-headed.

Oh, bravo, writer of this episode! The weaving of the A, B, and C plots and the emotional subtext of the A, B, and C plot was MASTERFUL.

Livejournal/yahoo is withholding comments. Usually this just lasts for a little bit and then it spits out all the comments I haven't been getting, but this time it's been days.

Sometimes my shipping preferences crack me up. Like, with Justified, after watching all of the aired episodes of season two, I watched the pilot and discovered that while my preferred couple was not related by blood (thumbs up), that is because the female character shot her husband, the male character's brother, to which his response was (I'm paraphrasing), 'well, he had that coming. And now she's single!' Which is, within the context of the show, actually kind of creepy. But also a wee bit hilarious knowing what happens later.

There are few things that irritate me more than people asking me what I'm reading when I'm reading in public. (Or commenting about the title and how it related to me, which happened when I read Wicked in public. Or giving me their negative opinion of the book I'm reading.) Needless to say, people commenting about my reading material? Makes me cringe, even if they're being polite about it.

How about you, flist? What is your reaction to people who ask about what you're reading?

Due to a library book sale and the used bookstore, my to-read pile is now overflowing the designated to-read bookshelf and piling up on my desk. Yay?

So, lately I've been trying to cut back on television watching to get me more time for other things – real life, writing, actual books, etc. But sometimes that doesn't work out.

Which is to say, I've gotten hooked on Justified.

I was told that you could just start watching with the second season (lies!) but even so, I'm totally addicted to this show. For those not in the know, the basic premise is about a US Marshal (Raylan Givens) who gets transfer from Miami back to his home county in Kentucky. It's a dark, violent, modern cowboy story and while second season's main plot focus on Raylon being a badass lawman and Boyd (who is sort of his friend? when I finish watching the first season I'll know) a convict trying to go straight. More Rambling On )

The last thing I want to mention is the use of language on this show. It reminds me of True Grit in the poetry and vocabulary that the show uses. Just about every line is clearly crafted with love and lends the show a deliciously dark humor that helps ameliorate the violence.

So anyone else watching Justified? And if not, have a succeeded in convincing you to give it a try?
