So,
mzminola 's mom gave me an urban fantasy novel to read and while I'm enjoying it immensly, it did hit me in the face with a cliché of the genre that I have decided I am throughly sick of:
The Mystery Love Interest.
You know, the hot guy who the heroine thinks is one thing (human, often) and it turns out he's something completely different.
It is all over the freaking place. Buffy, The Southern Vampire series, the Weather Warden series, Anita Blake, the Rachel Morgan series, the Dante Valentine series and that's just off the top of my head.
It's to the point where the only urban fantasy that I can think of that DOESN'T have this happen is War for the Oaks, and in that case it's not that this mystery lover isn't there, it's that the cliche is subverted by ( spoilers )
In the novel I am writing - you know, the one with actually scary vampires - I am going to have NO mysterious love interests. Everyone is going to know right up front who their love interest is. I'll find drama some other way.

Okay, so a bit ago
leafy_girl was asking for Naruto/Sakura recs and I wanted to rec a couple that I found in that post here.
Clean Through by AubreyWitch
“I'm sorry,” she says when Naruto's palms touch the back of her hips briefly.
He pushes her lightly, effortlessly. She surges forward, rising higher with each shove until the thick metal poles vibrate and clank under her momentum. Sometimes she forgets how much strength is hidden away behind his tan skin and lean muscles.
“For what, Sakura-chan?”
“I should have played with you as a kid.”
This story automatically gained points with me for NOT having Sasuke dead (which is an instant way to make me lose interest - taking out the competition doesn't mean that Naruto's won anything or Sakura's over Sasuke, you know?). While the author's Sai is a bit off, most of the character interactions are well done and I particularly like Sakura's mix of selfishness and kindness. WARNING: this story is incomplete and the last chapter is a bit of a cliff-hanger.
Seduce My Wife! by Doc Destructo
'"Sakura," Ino said seriously, grabbing the medic ninja's shoulders. "That dress is like a get-out-of-abstinence-free card. I've been covered in gore while wearing that dress and STILL had people hitting on me. Ebisu's even hit on me. It's foolproof."
"Wait, isn't Ebisu...?" Sakura asked, looking up and making a limp-wristed motion.
"Foolproof," Ino repeated, nodding.'
Okay, I will say right up front that I find the premise of this fic a wee bit problematic, however it does have some very good points:
-the problematic plot is due to Sasuke being a manipulative dick, which is true
-ANBU captain Ino (which, honestly, may have been my favorite part)
-Sakura being insanely mature and classy in the end, even if it's a bit abrupt
-Naruto being a believable adult and wooing Sakura in a realistically Naruto-esque way.

Okay, I just want to take a minute to pimp
halfamoon which celebrates female characters from all fandoms for the first two weeks of February.
And unlike the last comm I joined, which was all about women's issues yet produced mainly slash (how that works god only knows) this is all about the ladies.
I already have two ficlets planned and all forms of fanwork -graphics, icons, fanart, fanfic, fanmixes, etc are welcome.
