Because[livejournal.com profile] ignipes  is right – we all like talking about things we love - her are five fannish things I'm into right now:

1.) DeWitt/Dominic

2.) Farscape (I couldn't get into this show the first time I tried, but now I'm rewatching with my mom and I totally am. I'm still in the first season and can't wait to get to all the stuff I know happens later. But I can't wait it without my mom!)

3.) Tumblr (LJ may be TOTALLY DEAD but someone is going to be posting pretty pictures.)

4.) Barney/Robin.

5.) Rory/Amy. IDEK.

What are you loving right now, flist?

I am a fan of Westerns. Gunslinging + horses + themes of individualism = my cup of muddy water licked from a horse's hoof, you know?

However, I am aware that the vast majority of Westerns (in fact, the genre as a whole, I would argue) is really pretty unwavering in it's erasure and stereotyping of Native Americans. Which... is partially because That's How Westerns Have Always Been Written and part That's What Cowboys Thought At The Time (thumbs down).

Which brings me to a story idea I had (urban fantasy western) that was a short story that didn't really have a good place for Native Americans. And then I'm like, 'crap, am I just continuing the tropes that I dislike in this genre?'

In fandom, we have a tendency to hate the networks (DAMN YOU, FOX! DAMN YOU!) And while it's understandable (RIP TSCC, Wonderfalls, Firefly) there are also some times when I think executive meddling has made a show better.

For example:

–The tone of Firefly - the mix of drama and humor and pathos existed because the network wanted the show to be funnier. That blend was something I adored about the series and I disliked Serenity the movie largely because of the bleak tone that was created when Whedon had his head.

–In the Justified pilot, the scene with Winona and Raylan at the end was added because the network wanted the pilot to be "darker." Now, part of me is rolling my eyes going, 'did you WATCH the pilot? ExpandRead more... )

–The Dollhouse original pilot. Thank god the network told Whedon to redo it because frankly, the unaired pilot sucks. It's long, it's boring, it doesn't have a good narrative through-line, and it doesn't explain the Dollhouse in any kind of concise way. The actual pilot they went with both explains what the dollhouse is in about eight minutes and then has an awesome profiler vs serial killer story for the rest of the episode, which is a narrative I am on like white on rice.

So what are your examples of time exec meddling made things more awesome instead of less?

Space Girl: a multi-fandom vid about the amazing ladies of sci-fi over (I estimate) about sixty years.

THIS MADE ME SO HAPPY.

YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH IT RIGHT NOW.
