This is a great meme that I gacked from philcoulson over on tumblr and you should all do it, too. As was pointed out when it was making the round on tumblr, one thing that's notable about this meme is that it's all general questions - nothing about OTPs or romantic relationships. (Of course, because it's me, there's a touch of pairing talk anyway, because that's how I roll.)

(Psst, [livejournal.com profile] qualapec, this was the meme I was talking about.)

questions ahoy! )

I was scrolling through my LJ recently in an attempt to get a feeling for what the fannish landscape of 2013 has been thus far, and one thing I noticed is that I have done the (admittedly, super-awesome) Tennis Match Meme about a BILLION times in the last six months.

So my personal challenge for the next four weeks is to post (and play) with some of the many, many, many other memes that exist on the internet.

Starting with....

...and gacked from [livejournal.com profile] musesfool:

1. Comment on this post with the revolution will be televised.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ/DW.

[livejournal.com profile] qualapec gave me the letter 'J' which was super mean of her.

Jones, Indiana. He’s just the epitome of cool, okay? Go watch Raiders of The Lost Ark if you don’t believe me.

John Diggle. I don’t have much to say about Diggle.. Narratively, I like that he found out Oliver’s secret pretty quickly, because Oliver needs as many people as he can get telling him when he’s being an hot-headed lunatic (always). I found his relationship with Carly really adobs until their actual first date, which made me think that Carly was ready to move on but Diggle wasn’t. I like that Diggle’s reaction to Felicity joining the team was ‘self-defense training time, yay!’.

Those are all my thoughts.

John Conner exists so that we can focus on his mother and his killer robot girlfriend and their quest to save the world from Skynet.

Jaye Tyler. HEROINE OF MY GENERATION.

I loved Wonderfalls when it was first airing, but I didn’t love Jaye the way I do now. Because when Wonderfalls was first airing, I was an optimistic 15 years old. Now, I’m ALMOST 26 MY GOD SO OLD, having earned a BA and embarked into a workforce filled with twenty/thirty somethings who are all over educated and unemployable. Basically, I just get Jaye so much more now and she seems like such a prescient character. (Saint Jaye is right.)

It’s hard for me to verbalize all my Jaye Tyler feelings. Maybe when my rewatch is finished I’ll have more to say.

(FYI, J is a really hard letter to do this meme on, and I spent about a billion years thinking of all the fannish Jacks and Johns and Jeremys that I didn’t want to waste words on.)

James “Bucky” Buchanan Barnes. I am really looking forward to watching Natasha and Steve rescue this dude like the BAMFs they are, come 4.14.14.

The winter soldier is a ghost.

(ETA: right when I was ready to post I remembered Joan Watson, who is 100% flaw-free.)

In other news, Cartoon Network canceled Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

I couldn’t care less about Young Justice – I think that the writers made some very dumb creative choices for the second season that the show has yet to recover from (and now never will) and the scheduling dickery was classic ‘make a show hard to find and follow; justify cancelation’ from the network. I am grinding my teeth about Green Lantern, though. I have/had hope that
spoilers for the most recent GL episode )

On the subject of ironic timing, I have actually been meaning to talk about times that I am grateful when shows were canceled because sometimes I am (NOT THIS TIME, THOUGH).

These are the shows that I am grateful were canceled because it meant that I had a basically complete arc of a show I loved all the way through. (The Sarah Conner Chronicles are not listed because I still cannot believe that Fox didn’t give us a season three; Young Justice is not listed because I am so annoyed with the current season my previous love is already tainted; Green Lantern *could potentially be listed* if
GL spoilers again )
before the curtain drops.)

So, without further ado, shows where cancelation was a secret blessing:
  • Wonderfalls
  • Firefly
  • Legend of the Seeker
  • Dark Angel

In fandom, we have a tendency to hate the networks (DAMN YOU, FOX! DAMN YOU!) And while it's understandable (RIP TSCC, Wonderfalls, Firefly) there are also some times when I think executive meddling has made a show better.

For example:

–The tone of Firefly - the mix of drama and humor and pathos existed because the network wanted the show to be funnier. That blend was something I adored about the series and I disliked Serenity the movie largely because of the bleak tone that was created when Whedon had his head.

–In the Justified pilot, the scene with Winona and Raylan at the end was added because the network wanted the pilot to be "darker." Now, part of me is rolling my eyes going, 'did you WATCH the pilot? Read more... )

–The Dollhouse original pilot. Thank god the network told Whedon to redo it because frankly, the unaired pilot sucks. It's long, it's boring, it doesn't have a good narrative through-line, and it doesn't explain the Dollhouse in any kind of concise way. The actual pilot they went with both explains what the dollhouse is in about eight minutes and then has an awesome profiler vs serial killer story for the rest of the episode, which is a narrative I am on like white on rice.

So what are your examples of time exec meddling made things more awesome instead of less?

Freaking yahoo. Apparently they're 'upgrading' and I decided to just bite the bullet and change the interface. Yep, I sure do love my email program freezing and not showing emails and not having a 'delete' button at the bottom of the screen. Thanks a bunch!

I was really underwhelmed by the latest Doctor Who and disliked more things than I liked. Except for River Song. She was awesome.

Last week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 :

5 (canon) couples that seemingly came out of nowhere (thanks to anonymous).

1.) Veronica/Logan, Veronica Mars. I actually saw an image of the kiss before I saw the episode and thought to myself, nice manip, but that will never happen on the show. Oh how wrong I was. And frankly, their first kiss was pretty damn perfect.

2.) Aaron/Mohandra, Wonderfalls.

3.) Alex and her stupid neighbor/boyfriend, Nikita. Not like her and Thom, which had a great slow burn and made perfect sense for the show.

4.) Every relationship on Glee ever (sans Rachel/Finn and Emma/Will).

5.) Lanie/Esposito, Castle, adorable and yet also out of left field. It worked, though.

I finished the third Percy Jackson novel, The Titan's Curse, and really enjoyed it, despite Read more... )

In other news, I've started watching Castle again (I'm up to episode 2x15). I really adore it when Beckett fangirls about things - it's such a nice character note, and really makes her stand out from other well-tailored, by-the-book law enforcement ladies. Also, Alexis fails at Bondage Safety 101. Someone should give that girl a few lessons.

And now that our daily moment of inappropriateness is over, on to the 30-Day Shipper Meme:

Day 01 - What is your current favourite ship
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
Day 03 - A pairing that needs to happen now?
Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?
Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?

Day 06 - The best kiss?
Day 07 - The most heartbreaking scene?

Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?
Day 09 - The most believable relationship?
Day 10 - Why aren't these two married in real life?
Day 11 - What is your dream pairing?
Day 12 - Who had the best wedding?

Day 13 - What is your favorite television pairing?

Day 14 - What is your favorite book pairing?
Day 15 - What is your favorite real life pairing?

Day 16 - What is the absolute worst pairing?
Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?
Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing?

Day 19 - A pairing you've rooted for since the beginning?

Let's be honest: there are a lot. If I define this as pairings that I a.) shipped from the first episode/book and b.) never shipped either character seriously with anyone else you have:

Sydney/Vaugh, Jack/Irina
Brennan/Booth
Kitty/Cormac
Max/Logan
Kahlan/Richard
Parker/Hardison
Elizabeth/Will
Sabriel/Touchstone
Soul/Maka
Harry Dresden/Karrin Murphy
Eric/Jaye

Day 20 - The "can't stand the sexual tension anymore" pairing?

I puzzled greatly over what pairing to put here but talking about books made me realize the only answer I could give, the only pairing where it almost physically hurts that they're not together:

Cormac/Kitty from Carrie Vaugh's Kitty & The Midnight Hour book series. (AKA one of my favorite ongoing urban fantasy series.) I'm trying to imagine how to put this into fandom terms everyone can understand.

Okay, think about Dean Winchester: hot, good with guns, hunter of thing that go bump in the night. Now imagine that Winry Rockbell is a twenty-something music geek werewolf with her own radio show.

That is Cormac and Kitty. Now imagine that their meet cute is when it gets super-spoilery from here on in )

Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why?
Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?
Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great?
Day 24 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out badly?
Day 25 - A pairing that was/would-be adorable, but could never work out?
Day 26 - A pairing that you hated and ended up loving?
Day 27 - A pairing that you loved and ended up hating?
Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand?
Day 29 - What ship had the best proposal?
Day 30 - Your favorite ship forever and ever and ever?

So I've seen thirty-day memes all over my flist lately and this one finally grabbed me as being the right combination of completely about fictional things:

Day 01 - A show that should have never been canceled

Over the years, this has become a more complicated question for me, given that no matter how soon a show is cancelled I am grateful whenever it ends while I still love it.

That said, Wonderfalls. If there was every a show that was hamstrung by the network, it was this one. Quirky, sarcastic, and touching, Wonderfalls starred the rare female slacker who might be crazy and had way more story to unfold when it went off the air. How many episodes were actually aired? Three. Even so, 13 episode were filmed and since the writers knew that they had a tough show to sell, they made sure they could tell a complete story with the limited time they had.

Joss Whedon is interviewed by Ira Glass.

This was FANTASTIC. Seriously, I know it's not always a popular opinion, but I really like Joss - both the shows he's made (most of them) and the interviews and political statements of the man himself. Furthermore, Glass asks really astute, interesting questions on leadership, the chosen girl and her watcher dynamic that repeats, the killing of the father-figure, etc. It's well worth a listen, and I was sorry when I saw I only had fifteen minutes left.

So last friday's [info]fannish5 is really fitting:

What 5 series would you resurrect if you could?

1.) Firefly. Especially hearing Joss' thoughts on Zoe/Wash, and knowing that Wash wouldn't have died, I am sorry once again that this show got canceled when it did.

2.) The Sarah Conner Chronicles. On principle alone I was sad that this show got canceled when Dollhouse got renewed, but having watched a bit more, I'm even more regretful about this.

3.) Life. The second season was a bit rocky, mainly due to the writer's strike and Sarah Shanti's real-life pregnancy, but I the show was an interesting mystery series and had fantastic character exploration and development. It deserved a third season.

4.) Global Frequency. It never even got an aired pilot, but what was filmed was fantastic - awesome premise, interesting character, good actors and fantastic gender dynamics.

5.) Wonderfalls. This had such an awesome and complete first season that I hesitate to put in on the list - nothing breaks my heart like a sophomore slump - but listening to the writers talk about what they had planned, I could see them managing to keep the quality of their show up.

My feet were wet and cold for five hours yesterday.  : - ( And do you know how hard it is to try and convince yourself to ice your foot when you’ve been cold all day long?

And do you know the downside of having three days of paradise, aka, the weekend where you don’t have to do schoolwork? Your brain gets spoiled (what is this wonderous thing known as free time? how did I not know it sooner?) and when you get back to college you have no desire to work, and your brain gets annoyed if you try to do schoolwork fifteen hours a day.

Meme, stolen from hireadd
