I just finished my long, luxurious reread of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire.

–I kind of ship Haymitch/Effie. They would have epic annoyed!sex.

–On the subject of Haymitch, I believe him when he said he likes Peeta more than Katniss, but I think he loves Katniss like a daughter, even if he doesn't want to. Rereading the scene after the Quarter Quell, I think that he was expecting Katniss to try and talk him into taking Peeta's place, and that if she had, he would have be willing to sacrifice himself to get Katniss home.

–While I can see why people ship Madge/Gale (and think it's more interesting that Gale/Katniss for some of the same reasons Katniss/Peeta is) it still feels like a classic case of shipping the spares.

–Once again, while I'm rooting for Peeta/Katniss, I'm unable to deny how awesome Gale/Katniss is. And before anyone suggests it, this is a place where OT3 would be a terrible, terrible idea.

–Knowing it was coming, having Katniss go back into the arena seemed less of a repeat than it did last time. Although I think all the most interesting things happened before they get inside the dome.

On the subject of a movie, I am actually very excited. I would love a bigger fandom, I think my status as someone who got hooked on the books before the third one was released and pimped the hell out of the series would qualify me for Old Fandom Queen status and I would like live action icons NOT based on dream casting.

That said, even though I want her to be write, this article is made of fail. First of all, Gale wasn't the one who taught Katniss to hunt. She doesn't 'owe Gale and Prim' her life. (If she owes that to anyone, it would be Peeta, frankly.) She may be the underdog but she certainly isn't below-average. What the hell, writer?

In news that doesn't raise my blood pressure:

We have a cover and a title for the third and final book. And it's lovely (even if my inner nitpicker is going, 'but mockingjays have a black body).

I ship Gale/Madge not because I don't want Katniss/Gale.

I'm not saying you do - I'm staying the speaking personally, pairing both couples off like that feels too neat to be satisfying.

While Gale and Katniss share that tight childhood love, Peeta and Katniss have that connection that transpired within the Games that is exclusive only for them, and that's why they kind of makes more awesome than any other pair there is.

That is certainly what attracts me to that pairing! Plus, I think Peeta would be harder for Katniss to love, simply because she DOESN'T have the gut deep, wordless communication that she and Gale have, which makes that pairing very interesting to me.

As for Haymitch/Effie, well, YES. They spell spark!

Yes they do! And could you imagine Katniss's reaction?

I certainly feel like they need to work so hard for things to work out between them, even though the love is certainly there.

*nods* Or at the very least, interact with each other when they didn't have multiple motives for each action (especially on Kat's part).

If I would put it in my own context, I'd say it's that sort of possessiveness someone feels when someone close to them gets attached to another without you knowing, i.e. her jealousy when Madge brought Gale the medicine (YAY for my second OTP!)

Yep, I agree that's a factor. Honestly, though, I think Kat could be happy with either Gale or Peeta, all other things being equal.

As for Haymitch/Effie, I think Katniss would lose her head off. And roll on the floor laughing.

Oh, yes.

...which is the polite way of saying I call bullshit.

That essay strongly reminded me of all the intensely thought out meta that would occur between HP books - all of which turned out to be wrong.

Collins isn't a cheap writer. Her books hold up to reread because she gives us reasonable clues that Katniss (and sometimes the reader) misses but can pick up on reread.

And here's the thing: which is a more empowering, logical (as in, makes sense with what we know thus far) theme for Mockingjay - that Katniss stops being a pawn and starts being in control of her life.... OR there is ANOTHER person yanking Katniss' strings.

HP's ideas about what is going are too complex to be believed (how did anyone know that Kat would have volunteered for her sister - it's clear that it's not a usual thing to do at all, for example) and is completely different in tone from the two previous books.

Now, I'm not saying that there might be more to Mrs Undersea than meets the eye... but Collins is good at hinting at things to come (the gamemaker's watch, for example). I'd buy Undersea being sympathetic to the rebellion... I don't buy her being the mastermind behind it all.

The Hunger Games is about Katniss' awakening to the need for rebellion and her realization that she has been used and that that is unacceptable. To have a second reveal that Kat is being used is a.) repetitive and b.) against all the agency that Collins has spent two books building.

in the negative spectra of the word. The essay was well-thought, but for me generally, it doesn't make that SOLID hardrock sense.

Agreed. She clearly put a lot of time and effort into that essay, but part of the effort is because she's making castles out of air.

a) he's going to die or b) he is a pawn of the Capitol i.e. he is lying for his feelings for Katniss after all (WHICH IS UNLIKELY).

I'm going to go with 'he's really that good' because all other options would break my heart terribly (and b doesn't make sense at all. He threw away his knife! He tried to die for her! If that's not love I don't know what love is.)

Ah hah hah. My first reaction to the article was, "Wow, they stuck in someone's comic art that looks a little like Scott Pilgrim (http://www.onipress.com/display.php?type=se&id=2) or my Comicbook Scripting teacher's art from deviantart. That's pretty cool."

^__^;;;

I... don't know. >.>;;

I wondered if they used it with permission, and I also wondered if the artist got paid for it, but I also wondered if the artist got a lot more pageviews and visitors if they hadn't used it, but I also wonder if the article-writer couldn't find anything else? Who knows, I guess, unless you are the artist! Ahah! Conspiracy!

Take it interestingly. XD

Okay, I saw this post AGES ago, and this post plus another one by someone on my flist have both made me curious about the hunger games. So I decided to obtain them as ebooks with a friend's help, and well.....

*head desk* WHY did I do this?! ARGH! I love Peeta and Katniss already, and I'm not even that far into the first book yet (they've started training) but GAH! if they don't end up together, I'm gonna have a seriously big problem, and be very upset. but yeah, I got sucked into them, dang it!

*boogies down*

Sweet! I am THRILLED that another person is reading these books on my flist - it doesn't matter how old the post is, I'm delighted to be talking about them.

So far, the author has impressed me enough that I think I'll live with however she decides to end her books... but I'm really rooting for a K/P ending.

Feel free to pop in randomly with thoughts as you read or when you finish the books. ^_^

mockingjays have a black body.. you never know, maybe it has something to do with plot?

i kind of ship Haymitch/Effie
yes yes yes!! I agree, i thought that they would be funny/good together. You have to admit, they kept District 12's tributes alive. They work well together.

Movie...I just hope it isn't as bad as Eragon's movie. I really really want it to be good.

I like the idea of re reading these books. Maybe they won't be as stressful as the first time around. I was so invested with these characters, and worried for them that my TMJ started acting up (something that usually only happens if my real life is stressful) lol.

Well, in less than a week we'll find out!

Oh, no! And I imagine a reread WOULD be less stressful, given that you know what's going to happen.
