THIS.
Only, because it's me, it's 'dick' SINGULAR. (I'm a firm believer in one penis or less per sex scene. And by firm believer, I mean that's just what I find sexiest.)
Also, this leads into two things I've been pondering.
- I've been reading a lot of fucking filthy (in the BEST way) fanfic smut, which has me going, 'you know, I really need to up my smutty game. Get more explicit. Don't shy away from the dirty talk. At the same time....
- I was working on a fanfic where the fic's climax (that's what she didn't say) doesn't get past first base (there are characterization reasons for this) and writing the kissing was so. hard. How do you say, 'so there was tongue but not too much tongue' in a hot way? Seriously, never have I more strongly wished I could pull a hot boy from out of my closet to make out with for research purposes. I mean, I often wish I could pull a hot boy out of my closet but that's usually more directly related to my libido and less related to trying to be accurate when describing how much tongue was used.

as uh for further advice for tongue um is it the difference between running the tongue along teeth versus trying to reach the soft palate? Also there's active tongue-on-tongue action versus tongue-happening-to-be-in-mouth-while-trying-to-get-as-close-as-possible-to-the-other-person action. Uh none of those things I am saying actually sound hot, but, you know.

That's exactly the problem! How to describe it so it SOUNDS hot. It's hard (that's what she said).

SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH.
HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT, ON THE VERY DAY THAT YOU POST SEXY, ANGSTY ZATANNA/DICK.
You know you're awesome.
Also, the great benefit to writing Dick/Zatanna, is that I think both of them would have a very fast escalation period - I don't see those two as people would would just hang out necking, you know? They'd pretty constantly have to up the stakes.

But yes, you make an excellent point. I mean, teenage them might be more into necking (I hope so, necking is fun), but especially five years later them, who have more of a FWB relationship? Yes. Things would probably escalate quickly.

That really, really sucks. I say because one of the ways that I 'test' fics is whether reading something, *I* find it enjoyable or not.

Agreed.

It's definitely something I'm working on...what's worked for me towards becoming more comfortable with it is honestly writing a story where sex is part of char development so it effectively forces me to write it, but there's good cause to address both the physical and emotional aspects so it feels more natural rather than "Eh, I'm just writing smut". (THG, Haymitch/Johanna stuff, because you know they've both got to be fairly sexually fucked up...)
Generally, less is more, I think? If you feel like you're overdescribing, try stepping back a bit and see if it gets the point across OK.

*nods* Having an emotional issue that is either being repressed or expressed in a sex scene can be HUGELY helpful, imho.

Kissing/smut is one of those things that is difficult for me to write. I've read about it so many times. I know some people who can do it wonderful and keep it character-driven, but it just kind of reaches a point where I want to say, "They just bone, okay?"
EDIT: And I've asked people about this before, and the response I usually get is, "Show, don't tell." Which is extremely unhelpful if you don't know what words to use.

It was. That should be fixed now.

I truly feel that, hands-down, the hardest thing about writing smut is what words to use, ESPECIALLY for the lady business. Because you've got to pick words that a.) work for the audience and b.) work for the pov character AND THERE AREN'T THAT MANY WORDS FOR VAGINA IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I need more words for lady-parts! I would totally get more specific if there were more vocabulary. Because "thatch" is so awful IDEK, "twat" is too derogatory, "cunt" is either really hot or really offensive, but either way has to be used very sparingly, "pussy" just makes me roll my eyes because even my porn is not that porny, and "vagina" just makes me think of my old job, which was the opposite of sexy. I like "quim", but it's British so I don't think it really fits with American character thought processes.
For the last chapter, I just listened to this on repeat. No kidding, I did. FOR HOURS. But now I'm on another chapter so that means I have to find a different song...

*nods* Cunt is either perfect of wrong. Personally, an occasional 'pussy' works for me. It's gonna be a while until I can read/hear the word "quim" without hearing it in Loki's voice (opposite of sexy) and vagina is TOTALLY unsexy.
Lana Del Rey is fantastic. And has great music videos.
how much we both hated it when authors mentioned "sexy times" in the summary and then don't deliver. WE WANT THE PORN. I'm in my late 20s now, I can admit to being a perv.
So freaking frustrating when that happens!

OTOH, I don't think I can ever repurpose "pussy" into something sexy, to me. There's an inherent weakness to the word at its base metaphor. Pussy will always mean a infantile animal plaything that exists for someone's amusement... or a weaker person who is easily dismissed by others.
