I finished by reread of HP and my thoughts on the final book are here

Also, [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz  wrote a great piece of meta on Amy Pond, her sexuality, and her sexualization.

I think I ship Hermione/Krum more than I realize because the tiny bit of that pairing at the Wedding in the 7th book made me ridiculously happy.

My thoughts on Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix are here.
##

Will Schuester and Jeff Winger both get labeled as sluts by fandom sometimes and something about that kind of bugs me. Or I think it should be more specific. Will should be –slut and Jeff should be + slut, because while Jeff has had sex with more women in one season than Will did, Jeff went through these women one at a time and gave far warning when he was moving on (it was played for a laugh, but I find the way he gave Britta right of first refusal before moving on to Slater incredibly ethical), Will moved on someone else the day he broke up with his wife and then when his prospective love wasn't ready to have sex he sent her to therapy and then fooled around with another glee club coach, slept with his former high school crush, and I feel like there was another example of him being a total –slut.

Shipper Meme:

(I'm probably not going to have time to post over the next couple of days, so I'm going to do up to Sunday's question.)

Day 01 - What is your current favourite ship
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?

Day 03 - A pairing that needs to happen now?

Parker x Hardison. I do not understand why the writers haven't moved their relationship to the next level yet. They both clearly are into each other and I'm getting ready to see something besides them being cute around each other. Actually, I'm becoming convinced that Parker is a virgin and completely inexperienced and Hardison isn't the type to push, so that's why they're relationship is encased in carbonite.

Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?

Spike x Buffy. Hells yes! (Honorable mention: Blair x Chuck.)

Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?

*wails* I don't remember! When I first thinking about doing this meme, I was pondering this question as I gardened and I thought of the perfect pairing: mandated by the writers yet completely lacking any appeal! ...and then I forgot what it was. *sadface*

I've posted my comments on Goblet of Fire over at [livejournal.com profile] hp_revisited .

So, I haven't been visiting fandom_secrets lately. Now, I assume that for a while Inception was dominated that community - is that still going on?

The way my schedule worked out this week (part chance, part because I worked on Saturday and had a family outing at too-fucking-early-o'clock on Sunday), I have today off, sans a few appointments.

So anybody in the mood to gab about fandom?

Things I have been into recently:

•Community (besides the ubiquitous Jeff/Annie, my interest is piqued in Abed/Annie, Abed/Britta, and Britta/Annie).

•The Vampire Diaries. I just rewatched the pilot last night and was filled with happiness and joy. And I remembered why I had the foolish belief back then when this show started that I could ship Good Girl/Good Vampire. Oh, to be so young and foolish.

•Harry Potter. I'm currently on the downhill slope of Goblet of Fire and Hermione is maintaining a high standard of awesome. (Also, I like Krum/Hermione more and more as time goes on. He was a famous Quiddich star! Who went for the brainy girl! Who tragically paid more attention to the Boy Who Lived and had a crush on her oblivious best friend! SPEND THE SUMMER IN BULGARIA, HERMIONE!)

•Anastasia! I rewatched that movie with my mom a couple of nights ago and it was a really good childhood flashback. (Mom: "Did they just blame the Russian revolution on magic? Did Dimitri and Anya just elope with no money?" Me: "I'm so glad you waited until I was older to nitpick like this. (But you're right, of course.)"

•*points to tag list* While some things I later end up disliking end up in my tag-system, that and my icons are a good way to see what things I at one point liked enough to believe I'd be talking about them more than once.

So I'm reading Coin Locker Babies (which I'm enjoying, especially once the model with the pet alligator shows up and the main characters go to Tokyo)* and it clarified thoughts I've been having since I dropped The Life Of The World To Come. Now, one of the reasons I dropped The Life Of The World To Come was that Kage Baker has forgotten that Mendoza is supposed to be the main character of this series. The other, and the one that is relevant to this post, is that Baker decided that to understand Mendoza's love interest, we needed to spent 3/4 of the book watching him grow up.

WRONG.

If the reader needs to follow the character in question through his primary and secondary schooling with in order for the adult character to make sense, the author is failing. **

An author should be able to write a character  who we understand at any point in their life (with a few select flashbacks). Dragging us through their whole childhood is both lazy and a waste of the readers time.

On that subject, I am sick of the childhood that the readers are dragged painfully through being a young boy's experience with the British school system. Even if the world in question is the future or has magic I am still BORED OUT OF MY MIND.

*not a spoiler, all this happens in the first 60 pages and is on the flap copy.

**Note that this excludes series or books where growing and going through school is the basic fabric of the story, a la the Harry Potter series or Maggie Quinn, Girl vs Evil.

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

[livejournal.com profile] aj  gave me:

abhorsen:

The rank of Sabriel, the awesome heroine of Garth Nix's Sabriel. Imagine a quick witted school girl killing zombies and crossing back and forth between a WWI-era world and the classic fantasy-land. Awesome action, a magic system that makes sense, and a sweet, nicely underplayed romance.

canon underwear meta:

Once upon a time, chomiji posted an announcement on her livejournal that she had posted fic. We commented, and then their was comments about the underwear of the Sanzo-ikkou (Minukura approved, thus the 'canon'). That conversation, mutated, spawned, and almost reached 1,000 comments, which, considering it was four people chatting, was pretty damn impressive.

fictional women you hate:

You know those girls you hate because they hate tits and emotions and get in the way of the slash? Fuck you, she's awesome.

kimi wa petto:

The Japanese title of the manga 'Tramps Like Us' which is about when a japanese journalist has a very bad day (her fiance left her for his pregnant girlfriend, she punched on of her superiors after he came onto her drunkenly at a party, and she got demoted) and finds, on her way home, a homeless dancer. After he oh so cutely pleads with her, she lets him stay at her apartment if he'll be her pet.

The heroine, Sumire, is me. I am not even kidding a little bit. Thoughout the manga I was constantly stopping and going, 'oh my god, I do/think/feel that too!'

I actually named my new computer after her.

nymphadora tonks deserved better

This one is kinda self-explanatory. Tonks was badass. She deserved better than to have Kishimoto possess JK and write the Lupin/Tonks romance, which I shipped hardcore until it actually happened. (Which is why, boys and girls, that you choose carefully when shipping canon).

the fall of ile-rien

The series of books by Martha Wells that starts with The Wizard Hunters. It contains Tremaine, who is, in a world of warriors and mages, a half-suicidal playwright raised by her criminal mastermind of a father, and who has everyone going in circles around her. The action takes place in two different worlds - one a WWII mix of France and England and the other a tropical and less technologically advanced society that is the only functional matriarchy I have ever read.

veronica/weevil

My fanon pairing for Veronica Mars. Veronica is the nancy-drewing daughter of the ex-sheriff and Weevil is the leader of a motorcycle gang. It illustrate how perfect they are for each other, let me simply tell you that Veronica is driving to search for the truth the way people lost in the desert search for water. Of everyone in Veronica's life, Weevil is the only person who has never gotten pissed at her for it. Also, they have a long history of saving each other.
