I was listening to the author of I Wear The Black Hat do a radio interview yesterday, and what he said convinced me to not read his book.

There were two strikes against him. The first, he assumed that everyone relates more to the villain or that relating more to the villain as one gets older is a natural progression. (Not true.) Second, he completely blew off the question about why there were more male villains than female villains in his book.

The answer (that he didn’t give and is SO OBVIOUS) is that there are more epic, relatable male villains because female villains because, LIKE IN EVERY ASPECT OF STORYTELLING, on average, male villains get more varied, more interesting, more conviction-fueled villains backstories than female villains. Lady villains are often less evil and are evil because of lost/rejected/etc love.

I’m not going to say more on that, because, duh. Obviously. It doesn’t take a genius to see that.

What I am going to do is talk about how fucking much I love revenge narratives. ESPECIALLY lady-centric revenge narratives. Especially lady-centric revenge narratives that do not involve rape.

There is nothing I love more than a woman channeling her anger into a righteous violence.

Of course, having said that, my mind went completely blank on any other examples besides Kill Bill and Colombiana and True Grit. Thinking about it, I noticed that while a lot of female characters have revenge as part of their motivation, it will often get mudded. (I'm thinking of Regina and Alexandra Udinov, who have vengeance as part of their motivation but don't have that clean inciting incident>revenge quest>bloody satisfaction arc.)

Discuss.

Phonetically spell LaBoeuf's dialogue. Not only is it visually ugly, I feel like an idiot mentally sounding out what he's saying. So even if your characterization and prose are decent to good, I'm not going to keep reading.

I know, accents are hard. I sympathize. (That is the reason the plotbunny about LaBoeuf telling his unit about Maddie Ross and having them all thing he's exaggerating is not ever going to get out of my head.)

ETA: Post about writing accents and dialect here, via [info]chomiji .

I'm not gonna lie, I am NOT a fan of Valentine's Day. And actually, just admitting that and working extra hours (YAY MONEY!) and doing a whole bunch of annoying chores put me in a FAR better mood than I normal would be on February 14th.

On a completely different note, let's talk more about True Grit. So, there was a nice chunk of time spent on that movie on a recent episode of pop culture happy hour and it left me with thoughts:

First of all, Hailee Steinfeild was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar? Fuck that noise, she was the lead of that movie in every. conceivable. way.

Secondly, I love how everyone has the same reaction to Mattie and LaBoeuf's dynamic, which is "so that attraction between them – that's there, right, you saw it too? Okay, just checking, anyway...." Seriously. Everyone I know who watched the movie said some variant of that, sans my mother vaguely spoilery maybe? )

Third, Hailee Steinfeild is understandably being considered for the role of Katniss Everdeen and despite her having massive acting chops and being young enough for the role my instinctive reaction is "hell, no." To be honest, she just looks wrong to me. She's not sharp-featured enough, imho. [ETA: Okay, I just looked up some images of Steinfeild when she wasn't dressed for True Grit, and you know, what, nevermind. She has these wonderful almond-shaped eyes and the semi-realized beauty I always imagined Katniss to have, so I think she could do an amazing job with Katniss.] Your thoughts?

Finally, everyone who watched True Grit should totally go and read We Have No Rodeo Clowns In Yell County (Mattie/LaBoeuf). This is, without a doubt, what should have happened after the movie and the Mattie voice is amazingly perfect.
