The fanfic I just posted is the first and thus far only Slade/Shado fic on A03.

Fingers crossed that Yuletide changes that.

Also, please enjoy this delightful video of some great Felicity/Oliver moments:

And finally, these two gifsets make it really hard for me to think of Sara Lance as 100% straight.

What do you folks think of otp: his girl everyday that ends in y as a tag for Felicity/Oliver?

So I'm looking for Shado/Slade fic and imagining that I'm going to have to dig through a couple pages of fics that read like they were written by twelve-year-old to find something good. I go to A03 and:

Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 11.37.57 PM

IS THIS A CRUEL JOKE? ARE YOU HONESTLY TELLING ME THAT THERE ARE NO SHADO/SLADE FICS ON AO3?

There was a conversation ages ago on tumblr about the age differences between Felicity Smoak and Roy Harper (24-26 to 17) and Felicity Smoak and John Diggle (24-26 to mid-thirties) and how that made some people feel less than okay about shipping them, because that was too much of an age gap, and I was like,

Oh, sweeties. You just sound so young. And new to the ways of fandom.

I feel like some fandom have different ages, you know? And Arrow is young and innocent.

The last three conversations mom and I have had about Arrow have involved a pause to wonder at the fact that Shado didn't hook up with Slade. "Maybe Oliver has some some weird gravitational pull that makes women who should know better want him and now that Shado's not in his storyline, she'd come to her senses," I suggest.

Also, (and this is the part that's more relevant to my flist), my mom and I have officially placed bets on the romantic end of Arrow, loser has to buy the winner movie tickets. I bet that Oliver is going to end up with Laurel at the end of the series, mom bet that he'd end up with Felicity (foolish girl). I'd gladly be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

When Sara first showed up in Star City, I loved that Felicity not only pointed out that Oliver was cheating on Laurel with her and that that’s something that no one ever mentions (anymore). It makes me really want to read a Felicity/Oliver fic where Oliver is into dating Felicity and Felicity is like, ‘your love life is a dumpster fire, Oliver, you’re just going to cheat on me and break my heart.’

Basically, I’d love a fic that deals with Felicity having really serious reservations about being with Oliver and seeing that play out.

I would also be down with Felicity and Sara making out. Sara thinks Felicity is cute! Felicity totally saw Sara’s tits and shared clothing with her! I could go for it.

So I’ve quit and restarted Arrow about four times now. However, my mom started watching (she loves Moira and Felicity/Oliver, clearly good taste runs in our blood... and is passed on by environment and encouragement) and that got me watching again, so I’m up to date with season two although I still need to finish the first season.

[livejournal.com profile] errant_shadows asked me:

How about a list of your current fandoms?

New shows you intend to watch, old shows you're still watching, books, comics, movies, etc.?

It may prompt some interesting discussions from people who weren't aware of your shared interest.

This was a really great question, because I was thinking of doing a fannish check-in anyway. Basically, here’s the lay of the fannish land:

Arrow: still haven’t finished season one. This show is hovering right at that ‘I like this but I don’t love it’ place, frustratingly.

The Avengers: still interested in all my go-to pairings, sad that this fandom is in a lull at the moment (just waiting, I am sure, for new canon in the form of Thor 2 and CA: WINTER SOLDIER NATASHA ROMANOFF RETURN TO ME!)

Elementary: still haven’t watched any of season two. Probably because the back of my mind is going, ‘they’re never going to top Irene Adler is Moriarty, leave now.’

SHIELD: blah. I do not like Skye, I don't find the scientists amusing, etc, etc. I'm dropping this one.

Sleepy Hollow. Dropping this too. I want to love it, but each episode feels like forty minutes of chasing a macguffin, plus I'm shipping it wrong. I am WAY more interested in Ichabod's past slap-slap-kiss romance with Katrina or with him hooking up with Abby's sister than with Abby herself.

Parks & Rec: SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS!

I don’t have anything to say bookwise. Nothing worth talking about since Rose Under Fire and World War Z. I did really enjoy an anothology called Apple For The Creature, and it reminded me that I need to track down more Marjorie Lui novels.

Movies:

If my tv schedule ends up being as slim as it looks like it will be, I may have time to work on the massive backlog of movies I’d like to see. As for upcoming attractions, I am SO DOWN for Catching Fire, the Thor 2 stinger (seriously, I’m more excited for that than I am for Thor, for serious), and The Book Thief.

Comics:

Wherefore art thou, Hawkeye?

I am technically caught up with Captain Marvel, only I understand nothing. [livejournal.com profile] qualapec was the 'everyone dies alone but only the selfish live that way' the conversation the one you were talking about earlier in the context of the Carol + Jess relationship?

I also have some Black Widow-centric comics to read.

On the DC side of things (look at your life, look at your choices) I have the spoils from the Stephanie Brown masterpost, Cassandra Cain’s batgirl run (because Steph), selected Jason Todd comics (thanks, latenightcuppa!), and the beginning of Damian Wayne’s run.

I stalled out in the middle of season one of Arrow. But I have the sneaking suspicion that I will end up just starting to watch season two when it airs because there are enough people on my flist who watch it.

Plus Summer Glau will be on it.

Plus Felicity.

Plus Oliver's abs.

Oh, god, it's totally a lost battle, isn't it?

Jennifer Crusie speaks the truth about why Felicity/Oliver is AWESOME and also what makes opposites-attract relationships work. I knew that Felicity’s role was unplanned but I did not know HOW UNPLANNED. Learning that the first smile that Oliver gives Felicity was because Stephan Amnell just couldn’t keep a straight face – and then they kept that in the show - fills me with unholy delight.

Also, oh my god, in Faking It Eve was originally the romantic lead opposite Davy Dempsey. I CAN'T EVEN.

Since every single reviewer on A03 asked for a sequel to This Is An Art Of Living With A Ticking Heart, and you know, it does kind of beg for 'what happens next' I'm kind of considering it.

The problem: I have no idea what a sequel would look like.

So.... I guess I'm asking, as readers, want would you have to see in a sequel?

I was scrolling through my LJ recently in an attempt to get a feeling for what the fannish landscape of 2013 has been thus far, and one thing I noticed is that I have done the (admittedly, super-awesome) Tennis Match Meme about a BILLION times in the last six months.

So my personal challenge for the next four weeks is to post (and play) with some of the many, many, many other memes that exist on the internet.

Starting with....

...and gacked from [livejournal.com profile] musesfool:

1. Comment on this post with the revolution will be televised.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ/DW.

[livejournal.com profile] qualapec gave me the letter 'J' which was super mean of her.

Jones, Indiana. He’s just the epitome of cool, okay? Go watch Raiders of The Lost Ark if you don’t believe me.

John Diggle. I don’t have much to say about Diggle.. Narratively, I like that he found out Oliver’s secret pretty quickly, because Oliver needs as many people as he can get telling him when he’s being an hot-headed lunatic (always). I found his relationship with Carly really adobs until their actual first date, which made me think that Carly was ready to move on but Diggle wasn’t. I like that Diggle’s reaction to Felicity joining the team was ‘self-defense training time, yay!’.

Those are all my thoughts.

John Conner exists so that we can focus on his mother and his killer robot girlfriend and their quest to save the world from Skynet.

Jaye Tyler. HEROINE OF MY GENERATION.

I loved Wonderfalls when it was first airing, but I didn’t love Jaye the way I do now. Because when Wonderfalls was first airing, I was an optimistic 15 years old. Now, I’m ALMOST 26 MY GOD SO OLD, having earned a BA and embarked into a workforce filled with twenty/thirty somethings who are all over educated and unemployable. Basically, I just get Jaye so much more now and she seems like such a prescient character. (Saint Jaye is right.)

It’s hard for me to verbalize all my Jaye Tyler feelings. Maybe when my rewatch is finished I’ll have more to say.

(FYI, J is a really hard letter to do this meme on, and I spent about a billion years thinking of all the fannish Jacks and Johns and Jeremys that I didn’t want to waste words on.)

James “Bucky” Buchanan Barnes. I am really looking forward to watching Natasha and Steve rescue this dude like the BAMFs they are, come 4.14.14.

The winter soldier is a ghost.

(ETA: right when I was ready to post I remembered Joan Watson, who is 100% flaw-free.)

There was a conversation (on a locked post, so) about fanfic authors having Felicity Smoak (of Arrow) be a fan of various Big Fandoms (Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, etc) and while I think it works better with Felicity* than a lot of other characters, I think it's a ballsier move than most fanficcers realize.

The thing is, name-dropping fandoms (especially a fandom that author loves or that is super-popular currently) is one of the easiest ways to throw a reader out of the story, because you have to deal with the reader's opinion about what that character would like** AND their feelings about the property in question.

I mean, when it works***, it really works, but I think that most writers don't realize what they're risking on what is often not a very important detail.

*I bet Felicity is watching Game of Thrones. But I also suspect she liked the books better.

**Sidebar, playing 'what other media would fictional character X love' is super-fun, imho.

***that time Tony Stark thought about his mother singing Simon & Garfunkle's "America" as a lullaby  and how he thought it was referencing Captain America ALL THE FEELINGS MY GOD.

[+] Finally, based on the conversation that inspired this post, now I’m imagining that Felicity is a total arthouse film and History Channel geek, instead of the more common sci-fi/fantasy nerd.

[+] There is a whole other post regarding writing canonically well-read characters like Rory Gilmore, Blair Waldorf, and Dan Humphrey.
