a.) really obvious and
b.) often talked about
(the creator himself did a damn fine of job, although I think he's underplaying how much Artemis replacing Roy, even though Roy quit first is a legit issue)
but the reasons why Wally is into Artemis are talked about less often. I know it’s tempting to go ‘of course he loves, Artemis, who wouldn’t?’ and while that’s true, don’t get me wrong, that’s not going to lead to a tl;dr shipper post, now is it?
The thing is, Artemis makes Wally better. The flip side of Wally almost giving Artemis as good as he gets is the fact that he has to try – with Artemis, Wally has to bring his A game (both with wise-cracking and with super-heroing). Additionally, Artemis’ own backstory and how that affects her actions (that she lies to the Team to protect her secrets, the fights with Chesire and Sportsmaster) tie into Wally’s arc, which is about becoming not smarter, but wiser. (E.g, how Wally’s souvenirs are about the deeper lesson of a mission, how he will consciously choose what Aesop he’s taking away from each mission. Best example of this is him choosing the cooler that held a girl’s heart over the villain’s sword.)
And now I’m getting sad, once again, that we didn’t get to see more of Wally and Artemis in a committed relationship. (Okay, basically, I buy Artemis and Wally taking a break from super-heroing to get their degrees, but I don’t buy, short of some kind of epic tragedy, them both deciding to quit on a more permanent basis, which is kind of what the dialogue strongly implied and which I am not okay with for several reasons.)
