This is a great meme that I gacked from philcoulson over on tumblr and you should all do it, too. As was pointed out when it was making the round on tumblr, one thing that's notable about this meme is that it's all general questions - nothing about OTPs or romantic relationships. (Of course, because it's me, there's a touch of pairing talk anyway, because that's how I roll.)

(Psst, [livejournal.com profile] qualapec, this was the meme I was talking about.)

A year ago I listed my top ten favorite male and female characters, in order.

It was brutal.

And even at the time, I knew that there was no way that list was going to stay static.

So may I present, Redbrunja’s Top 10 Male and Female characters, 2013.

(To save time, I’m only providing commentary for characters who are either new to the list, or have moved up or down it in noteworthy ways.)

Drumroll, please. )

Coming up, Top Ten Pairings and Top Five Friendships.

(masterlist of prompts)

(past answers)

Day 13: The ship you love for the way they hurt each other.

Irina Derevko and Jack Bristow.

Okay, I'll admit, if we're tallying up who hurt who more, Irina is probably going to win by a mile. That said, Jack did shoot that doppleganger he truly thought was her, that one time.

Day 14: The ship you love for the angst, banishing all joy and sunlight.

Lila and Cassel, the Curse Workers series. I was actually just thinking about way that I could get more people to read this series (the first book is White Cat by Holly Black). Fandom would love the book series and this relationship. It has:

  • a badass lady

  • the snarky, self-loathing guy who loves her ridiculously

  • dubious consent treated like the serious thing it is while also being fucking romantic as fuck

  • the girl

  • trying to 'get over' her feelings for the guy by having sex with someone else

  • the guy thinking he is a complete monster and still struggling to make the most moral choices he can, despite his fucked up ethics.

(Oh, also, the main character? I'm 99% sure he's black.)

(Also, side rant: the first two original covers for this series are AWESOME and I still haven't bought the third book because LITERALLY NO ONE sells the awesome third cover, they just have the terrible rebooted cover. So I'm going to wait and hope they reboot the covers again so I can find one that sucks less than these.)

Day 15: The couple that are at their moral worst when around each other.

I had the hardest time coming up with a good answer for this. The thing is, I don't tend to ship bad guy/good guy pairings, so I don't have examples of couples who get together and go on a crime spree. The closest answers I have are Zuko and Katara and Jeff and Annie for the exact same reason. Excuse me while I talk about one of my favorite tropes:

Something that sets my shipper sense tingling is when a female character is comfortable enough with a male character that she doesn't need to be "good" around him. He is the person who is going to go with her on a roadtrip of revenge. He is the person she is going to behave like a selfish adult around.

Basically, when a female character is so comfortable with a male character that she shows him her darkest, unglies parts and his reaction is, 'let me start the car,' I'm hooked.

(Does that make sense?)

Without realizing, I had scheduled my dentist appointment (two fillings, which totally makes my finances whimper) for Friday the 13th. Which was actually kind of fine - I honestly tend to have good luck with Fridays the 13th. And I was totally blase about going to the dentist - 'oh, it's not big deal, except for the expense' I repeated, to multiple people. Until I actually walked into the office, and realized I was jittery with nerves. Which isn't too surprising, since I've had some heavy-handed hacks working on my teeth.

Plus I've watched Alias.

This was the first time I've had a filling with this dentist, and it actually went really well.

And then, since my dentist is literally next door to work, and I wanted to make up some of the hours I didn't work on July 4th, I ended up doing six hours of data entry (plus obsessively refreshing my personal email on my iTouch). Which was actually quite pleasant - I got major points for coming in on a Friday and I listened to a lot of Lana Del Ray*. One of the things I'm doing is taking notes on clients from one database to another and there is a ton of entering dates and oh my fucking god can I rant about this for a minute? In the new program, dates in regards to appointments are written US standard: month/day/year and the date of birth is written: year/month/day (all numeric). They are in different formats, apparently, for the sole purpose of fucking with me. And in the OLD database, which is where I'm taking information from dates are sometimes written US standard and sometimes written day/first three letters of the month/year.

After a couple of hours of this, I have no idea a.) what day it is or b.) which number corresponds to which month.

That said, work is going MUCH better than it has been (there are less problems, the new clinician thinks I'm awesome, and I have a super-low threshold of caring). For me. My friend found out today that due to a weird screw up in the system he's going to have to completely redo the project he'd been working on since Monday.

*Lana Del Ray's song Carmen reminds me SO STRONGLY of a gender-swapped Tony Stark, I can't even tell you.

Okay, two doses of [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 in one (from several weeks ago, because I fail at being timely).

Five canon events that you found unbelievable and wished had not happened.

1.)

Killing off Coulson

First, I think killing off a fan favorite who is a huge part of the narrative cohesion of your multi-movie universe is a dumb move. THAT SAID, if you are going to kill him off, you have got to do so in a way that feels inevidable. I just cannot get over the fact that Fury lying to the team (more than he already did) would have been just as effective. And it was like, only Tony and Steve who actually needed the kick that Coulson's death provided (or, you know, possessed).

2.)

Arvin Sloane living till the end of Alias.

Friends or not, I spent seasons thee and four going, 'why does Jack not just snipe this bastard?'

3.)

Dov's infatuation for Gail being dropped like a hot potato.

First off, you do not waste as A+ love confession like that. Secondly, it makes it hard to root for Dov and his awesome ATF gf when he was in love with anther woman in the middle of when they were dating. Third, Gail is fucking awesome and I do no buy Dov OR Chris moving on as fast as it seemed they moved on at the end of season two.

4.)

Logan Kale regaining the ability to walk.

While I felt like Logan's desire to regain the ability to walk and the ways in which he would betray his own morals to do so could lead to some fascinating storytelling, I hated how the writers seemed to think that the wheelchair was a chastity belt and that he couldn't be with Max if he was paralyzed and I ALSO hate how it seems like in most narratives with characters in a wheelchair, sooner or later they are magically fixed, because, IDEK, don't you know paralyzed people can't ever be heroes?

5.) Tom and Ann on Parks. Everything about that pairing (as a romantic pairing) is MADE OF FAIL. God, I just want Ann to date an actual adult. It's like, no wonder she made a fool of herself with Chris - say what you want about that man, he is an adult.

Name the five moments in canon that made you believe your favorite pairing belongs together.

1. Clint/Natasha

Clint: Do you know what it's like to be unmade?
Natasha: You know I do.

2. Dimitri/Anya

"Princesses don't marry kitchen boys."

3. Andy/Sam.

At the end of episode 3x02, when you see Andy with her head in Sam's lap at the end of a long day. That convinced me, more than the prior two seasons of pining and near misses - that those two could make it.

4.) Richard/Kahlan

Kahlan has a knife at Richard's throat.

"Did I do something wrong?"
"I'm just not used to people touching me."

DON'T WORRY, SWEETIE, RICHARD IS GOING TO SPEND TWO SEASONS FIXING THAT.

5.) Tony/Pepper

Tony: I don't like it when you have plans.
Pepper: I'm allowed to have plans on my birthday.
Tony: It's your birthday?
Pepper: Yes.
Tony: I knew that. Already?
Pepper: Yeah. Isn't that strange? It's the same day as last year.
Tony: Well, get yourself something nice from me.
Pepper: I already did.
Tony: And?
Pepper: Oh, it was very nice.
Tony: Yeah?
Pepper: Very tasteful. Thank you, Mr. Stark.
Tony:You're welcome, Miss Potts.

Where is everyone this weekend? Don't try and tell me you folks have lives or some such. ^_^

I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] backtothesea last night and we started talking about, obliquely*, when/if you quit shows you used to love.

She mentioned being happy she finished ALL of BSG, even though there were times it felt like a total slog, and I mentioned that Alias was a pivotal show for me in that regard. I dragged my way through the last three seasons of that show - the final season was particularly unpleasant, despite liking some of the new cast members, to the point that I did not delete any of the episodes I'd finished watching so that in the minutes after I finally finished, I could delete three seasons in one click of the mouse.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So yeah, that show kind of broke something in me.

Now I'm a big proponent of quitting a show pretty much the minute it stops being entertaining on a week-by-week basis.

What are your thoughts, flist? When and why do you quit shows? Or do you stick them out until the bitter, bitter end?

*I had the epiphany that, given my unholy love and personal identification with Regina Mills combined with Once's ratings, I was going to be watching Once Upon A Time until season seven, cursing the writers and writing fix-it fic and cursing the writers and writing fix-it fic from season two? three? onwards.

I was reading the Bill of Rights today (one day I am going to manage to memorize them, word for word) and while the US government has many examples in its history and is currently not living up with the spirit or the letter of the Bill of Rights, it is an extremely elegant and humanist document.

Okay, total tone shift.

A couple days ago, [livejournal.com profile] terenewen  suggested a meme:

Top 5 hypercompetent characters you'd want in your employ. Also, what could happen in canon to make then snap?

1. Batman. Now, I know the comic are all like, 'blah, blah, Batman can't kill, slippery slop, whine, whine,' but I think that's bullshit. I think that's a comforting lie that Bruce tells himself. Now, what would actually break him? My money is on a supervillain killing and torturing Alfred in front of him.

2. Sydney Bristow. Now, in general I would argue that anyone can be broken as long as you have the right leverage. But for some people, there is no right leverage. Partially due to her training, partially due to her personality, I cannot imagine Syd ever being broken. You may think you've done it, but she's just playing along and biding her time until she kills you ass.

3. Katniss Everdeen. Unlike the other characters, we've seen her at her nadir. We'd also seen her get back up on her feet and continue living.

4. Michael Westen. Again, there isn't anything that you could do to him directly that would get him to crack but torture his family and/or Fi and Sam?
5. Mal Reynolds. Losing Serenity. He could survive that if he had his crew with him and they continued on together but only barely.

In other news, I've started watching Castle again (I'm up to episode 2x15). I really adore it when Beckett fangirls about things - it's such a nice character note, and really makes her stand out from other well-tailored, by-the-book law enforcement ladies. Also, Alexis fails at Bondage Safety 101. Someone should give that girl a few lessons.

And now that our daily moment of inappropriateness is over, on to the 30-Day Shipper Meme:

Day 01 - What is your current favourite ship
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
Day 03 - A pairing that needs to happen now?
Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?
Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?

Day 06 - The best kiss?
Day 07 - The most heartbreaking scene?

Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?
Day 09 - The most believable relationship?
Day 10 - Why aren't these two married in real life?
Day 11 - What is your dream pairing?
Day 12 - Who had the best wedding?

Day 13 - What is your favorite television pairing?

Day 14 - What is your favorite book pairing?
Day 15 - What is your favorite real life pairing?

Day 16 - What is the absolute worst pairing?
Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?
Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing?

Day 19 - A pairing you've rooted for since the beginning?

Let's be honest: there are a lot. If I define this as pairings that I a.) shipped from the first episode/book and b.) never shipped either character seriously with anyone else you have:

Sydney/Vaugh, Jack/Irina
Brennan/Booth
Kitty/Cormac
Max/Logan
Kahlan/Richard
Parker/Hardison
Elizabeth/Will
Sabriel/Touchstone
Soul/Maka
Harry Dresden/Karrin Murphy
Eric/Jaye

Day 20 - The "can't stand the sexual tension anymore" pairing?

I puzzled greatly over what pairing to put here but talking about books made me realize the only answer I could give, the only pairing where it almost physically hurts that they're not together:

Cormac/Kitty from Carrie Vaugh's Kitty & The Midnight Hour book series. (AKA one of my favorite ongoing urban fantasy series.) I'm trying to imagine how to put this into fandom terms everyone can understand.

Okay, think about Dean Winchester: hot, good with guns, hunter of thing that go bump in the night. Now imagine that Winry Rockbell is a twenty-something music geek werewolf with her own radio show.

That is Cormac and Kitty. Now imagine that their meet cute is when it gets super-spoilery from here on in )

Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why?
Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?
Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great?
Day 24 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out badly?
Day 25 - A pairing that was/would-be adorable, but could never work out?
Day 26 - A pairing that you hated and ended up loving?
Day 27 - A pairing that you loved and ended up hating?
Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand?
Day 29 - What ship had the best proposal?
Day 30 - Your favorite ship forever and ever and ever?

Day 06 - The best kiss?

Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?

I puzzled over this question until the obvious, perfect, answer hit me like a ton of brinks:

Jack Bristow and Irina Derevko, aka spy!Daddy and spy!Mommy. Irina married Jack and had a child with him because he was her mission; somewhere along the way, she fell in love. He lost the wife he adored (and never truly had) and somewhere along the way began to love the devious woman she truly was. All their scenes together in season two are rich with what-might-have-been, history, and the potential for violent passion. And this? This is the short, much abridged version. The entirety of their baggage could fill the cargo hold of a Boeing 747. There was the illegitimate child she had with his best friend, the time he had sex with her sister, the time she shot their daughter, the time he shot a clone of Irina thinking it was her after they danced together, etc, etc, etc.

So, I watched The Losers Sunday night and it was fabulous. Completely ridiculous in all the best ways. spoilers ) I especially loved Aisha. miss tough chick of the universe )I'm trying to get ahold of the comic series.

On the subject of comics, based on a recommendation from [livejournal.com profile] smillaraaq , I read the first volume of I.N.V.U. (yes, the title is terrible), which is addictive. First, it's been a long time since I've read any manga - I'd forgotten how enjoyable it is. Secondly, this volume passes the Bechel test with flying colors, and thirdly, the soap-opera-ness of it isn't restrained to the romance - we have two overlapping love triangles AS WELL AS storylines about a.) supporting yourself financially b.) career goals c.) family issues/gender fuckery which combines to make me want the next volume now now now. (It also really reminds me of The Vampire Diaries, and I'm not totally sure why.)

Also, on the subject of things I love, I'm rewatching Alias and hot damn, I had forgotten how pure and excellent and well-constructed the first episodes of the first season (I just finished "Parity") are. Also, Gina Torres ♥.

My competency-kink combined with my lack of patience with people who AREN'T good at their job makes this a really easy question to answer. That said, there are five people who I think are scarily competent at their jobs (in no particular order):

List five characters you'd want on your side in any kind of trouble. Bonus points for assembling an "Action Team" with complementary skills.

1.) Jack Bristow

2.) Elizabeth Swann

3.) Sophie Deveraux

4.) Sarah Walker

5.) Max Guvera

I would want to have one of these individuals by my side no matter what kind of trouble I was in. However, this would make a terrible team, because with the exception of Sophie and Sarah, these people are not good at taking orders. And Sarah wouldn't take order from anyone on this list except Jack.

from last weeks [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 :

Name your 5 favorite families, from any fandom.

1.) The Gilmores. First of all, this is the only time I have ever seen a mother/daughter relationship that even approaches my own relationship with my mother. Secondly, EVERYONE is this family loves and cares for each other, even if the sometimes hurt each other and screw up. It is clear that Emily and Richard, even after forty years, love each other very much.

2.) The Bristows. Jack and Irina and Sydney, oh my. How could you go wrong? They're like the Gilmores, only with more betrayal, killing each other, sex, and hot outfits.

3.) The Sabaku Nos aka Temari, Gaara, and Kankarou. Admittedly, like most things in Naruto, I think this family may be more awesome and fucked up in my head. However, I imagine that Temari and Kankarou basically got kicked out of the house once daddy realized that, maybe making my youngest into a monster (and killing my wife in the process) wasn't a good idea, and so they kind of raised each other, and then got shoved into a team with their crazy youngest brother, and then, after he realized that killing everybody on the planet wasn't a good life goal, the Sabaku Nos are left to try and build a family out of the bloody, violent ruins of their familial relationships. (And yeah, I ship it.)

4) The Cortez/Winterbourne family. Paige and Lucas are the best characters Kelly Armstrong ever wrote, and the relationship between them and their adopted daughter hits so many of my kinks: the woman being more experienced sexually, the man knowing he's in love and committed to this relationship first, a father/daughter relationship between two people who aren't related.

5.) The Mars Family. See icon. I can't say it better than that.
