Am I trying to trick my brain into thinking it's 2002?

Due to a series of events I don't understand and am not sure I like, I am reading Draco/Hermione fics going through a couple of HP fanartists pages.

No, I don't understand it either.

men have had every advantage of us in telling their own story

There was a post going around tumblr that really got under my skin - it was a fairy accurate summary of the king and lionheart dynamic, but the line about not being able to find a example with a lady just***... triggered all my past experience of people dismissing het and femme-slash because [pick a square from your slash fangirl bingo card, pick any square].

*** I also want to note that the person I linked from tagged this post 'Kate/Clint' SO CLEARLY I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO THINKS THAT THIS DYNAMIC EXISTS WITH LADIES.

So, queen and lionheart dynamics. The examples that came to mind:

Lydia/Allison (Teen Wolf)
Sabriel/Touchstone (Sabriel, bolded because so much yes.)
Tremaine/Ilias (although that's more spy/lionheart)
Mulan/Aurora (Once Upon A Time)
Jane/Darcy (would be the super-fluffy version of this trope)
Any Evil Queen/Huntsman story would be the evil example of this trope
I'd accept a case for Hermione/Ron here.
I think a case could also be made for Cameron/John from TSCC.

I Will Forgive Your Wrongs If I Am Able | But For My Own I Feel Great Shame

[livejournal.com profile] scorpoid1 asked me:

talk about your fandom evolution? like, what fandoms did you start out in, how have your tastes changed and grown since then, what is different now than when you first started off in fandom and what hasn't changed? Idk I am just curious I am always fascinated when people talk about this kind of stuff.

My first fandom was Buffy, shortly followed by Harry Potter.

Since We're Talking About HP Already

There was this Luna icon that I thought I saved but didn't, which was mainly her face (she was injured, I think it was from the last movie) right at the bottom and she was looking super-badass? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

You Never Forget Your First

It's apparently Harry/Hermione vs. Hermione/Ron time on my tumblr.

Again.

A decade later.

ETA: but what prompted this? Does anyone know? I feel like there is a story I'm missing.

pull up in your fast car, whistling my name

I'm finally, finally starting to feel better, enough that I am going to answer some of the great ship questions I was asked about two weeks ago.

[livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 asked: How about Dick/Babs, and why you don't ship them in YJ (and who you ship them with instead, if applicable).

[livejournal.com profile] errant_shadows asked: What about your first ever ship? (Maybe something before you even knew what shipping was.)

Were they canon? OTP? Do you still ship them? Did you ever write fic for them? (<== links please, if it's online)

And what about the pairing appealed to your freshly fangirling heart?

fandoms, fandoms, fandoms

I'm super late on this, but [livejournal.com profile] quiet_rebel asked me about what my first fandom was.

This is really easy to answer: Buffy.

I discovered Buffy at the same time my family got high-speed internet and I discovered fandom. Shortly following that, I got into the HP fandom.

Oh! Here's something that tangentially relates: I was super upset to discover that, by length of time invested, Naruto was my longest-running fandom. But I'm pretty sure Avengers have beat that out, at this point. Hell yes.

I Just Made The Face.

You know the face. The face you make (and if you're me, the bonus, OUT-LOUD "what?") when some one sorts characters into Hogwarts Houses and gets it SO WRONG.

(Simmons in Gryffindor and Skye in Ravenclaw is 100% WRONG.)

Oh My God, ME TOO!

Return Of The Unusual Opinions Amnesty Post.

Personally, for me, the gem of the post was this comment:

I always take Hermione's daughter being named Rose (while flower-names is a very Harry's Family Thing) as ~proof that Hermione and Harry had an affair at some point. /what canon

I could be down with that. I'm just saying. Also, I've noticed that with these times of things, there is always that ONE OPINION where I disagree and have this visceral need to comment stating my disagreement. Luckily, I have thus far remembered what post I am in before hitting reply.

Two Ships Enter, One Ship Leaves

Vote for two master assassins in love. I realize they are up against an old-school shipping juggernaut but I feel like our two avengers can take on Mulder/Scully and triumph!

Also, I succumbed to fandom peer pressure and wrote out my thoughts on which Hogwarts houses which Avenger belongs in. I am blushing but I also want to hear my flist's thoughts.

Not To Hash Anyone's Squee....

I realize hypothesising what Hogwarts House a Hunger Games character would be in is just a fun fandom exercise but I feel like the debate about which House Katniss belongs to just goes to show what an awesome and complex character Katniss Everdeen is the inherent artificiality of that kind of personality-based division of individuals. Like, I think it tends to lead to a shallowness of characters because it leads readers and writers to think of people as tropes instead of individuals. Rowling didn't manage to pull it off and in situations like Divergent it just comes across and ridiculously arbitrary and nonsensical.

In other news, over at [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers the current challenge is 'first times.' Which I find... a promising challenge.

I Hope I Lie & Tell Everyone You Were A Good Wife

You're welcome.

The very first time I heard 'Little Lion Man' I immediately thought of Ron Weasley. And now there is not only a Ron Weasley vid to that song but a perfect Ron Weasley vid.

~

I love tumblr as much as the next girl but it is a terrible place to post fic. Usually the formatting sucks and half the time when people reference a fic, it takes me forever to figure out where it actually is.

(no subject)

Some more LJ topics from the ABC meme:

Hermione Granger. She's awesome. What else is there to say?

[livejournal.com profile] chomiji  asked about my favorite Terry Prachett book/character and as much as I want to say Tiffany Aching... and as much as I adore her... that would be a lie. It's Moist Von Lipwig. Little anecdote to illustrate why: when I was reading Going Postal, I literally dog-eared half of the pages so I could find all the funny quotes I wanted to share with my mom. At one point, I read her a humorous section and she refused to let me stop reading. Basically, I find Moist HILARIOUS and I dig the romance and, basically, I just love that book and that character to bits.

Leslie Knope. Where to even begin with the awesomeness that is Leslie Knope? For the sake of my sanity, I am going to pull out two facets of her delightful characterization: her feminism and her niceness.

First off, can I just say how wonderful it is to have a outspoken, actively feminist character on tv? Who is not mocked for her beliefs but is textually supported in her position that women are awesome? It makes my heart gooey to think of Leslie promoting girl's with things like Camp Althena and her wall of women in politics.

The other thing I wanted to mention was her niceness. Now, for a lot of main female character it seems like niceness is a default; god forbid a female lead be anything but nice, nice, nice. But none of the characters who fall into that default mode are nice like Leslie Knope. Because Leslie Knope is nice without losing a fucking shred of her agency. Leslie Knope is so nice, she is going to throw you the best goddamn birthday party you have ever had. Leslie Knope is nice and she is going to turn the pit next door into a park. Leslie Knope is nice so she's not going to let her city's budget crises stop her from throwing a children's concert. Leslie Knope has been very civil... but she will waterboard you.

Today Totally Rocked

–I got the job I really, really wanted; I start Tuesday.

–I went to see Super 8, which was awesome.

–I listened to one of my bffs rant about the 7th HP book. She was articulate and outraged and hilarious.

–This was linked all over my flist today but I'm going to link to it as well: The Boy Who Lived Forever, which is the only professional article on fanfiction that I ever felt actually got it. Best quote: They're fans, but they're not silent, couchbound consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the culture in its own language.

–If you haven't been keeping an eye on 12_12_12's meta-ings about gender, you should check it out. Especially part two, where she talks about Blair Waldorf and the difference between nice and good, and I name-check some of my favorite bitchy, BAMF ladies in the comments.

–All the cards I use most in my purse - my debit card, my credit card, my bus pass, my library card are all basically the same shade of blue.

Why Is It Always So Quiet When I Have Insomnia?

Okay, fannish5 time:

Name five fannish opinions of yours that have changed since you entered fandom.

1.) Super-fanon pairings (as in, characters never interact in canon) are becoming less and less interesting to me. The pairings that I'm really invested in/write a lot of fic for (regardless of whether I think they'll get together in the text or even want them to) are all ones that have a textual relationship, even if it's not explicitly romantic or totally reciprocated (e.g. Zuko/Katara, Jeff/Annie, Damon/Elena). Back when I was a wee, innocent newbie, I was reading a ton of Hermione/Draco and Draco/Ginny as well as Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny, and I've read just about every Buffy pairing possible at least once (including Tara/Spike, Spike/Xander, and Willow/Giles).

2.) I no longer feel that if I find a fic for a show and character(s) that I like, I have to read it. I just don't have the time! Now I basically only read fic for the fandons I'm obsessed with right this very moment or if I know the writer is awesome. And I can't even remember the last time I read a long fanfic.

3.) I used to be really nervous about writing sex scenes. And now I host kink memes. Wow. Just thinking about it kind of boggles my mind.

4.) Well-crafted, beautiful icons of characters I'm not in love with > less awesomely done icons of characters I like more.

5.) I upload less icons of secondary characters than I used to.

So, flist, what has changed for you since you discovered fandom?

Five questions you would like to ask authors or creators of source material in your fandom(s).

Assuming that they would answer honestly...

1.) TVD shooting has been plagued by injury, illness, and foul weather this season. I'd love to talk with the writers about how that changed when they had hiatuses and if/how it shaped storylines.

2.) The TVD writers and I also need to talk about Matt because how they think they're writing him ≠ how I see the character at all.

3.) I'd ask Suzanne Brockmann, writer of the Troubleshooters series (which has a reoccurring cast of characters and several romances that play out over multiple books), if she originally planned to write a Sophia/Decker romance and switched it to Sophia/Dave because even knowing the endgame, early books point in a direction that later books do not bear out. Which is not to say I don't love Sophia/Dave, because I totally do.

4.) I'd talk to TSCC writers about how they intended to resolve Cameron's... corporeal issues.

5.) Dear Carrie Vaughn (author of the Kitty & The Midnight Hour series), ARE YOU DELIBERATELY SETTING UP A RELATIONSHIP EVERYONE WITH TASTE IS GOING TO SHIP JUST TO REFUSE TO WRITE IT? No love, me.
